'Sunset Boulevard' to return to theaters in August for 75th anniversary
July 14 (UPI) -- Paramount announced plans for the 75th anniversary of Sunset Boulevard on Monday, including a theatrical re-release Aug. 3 and 4.
Sunset Boulevard was originally released Aug. 10, 1950. The film opens with screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) floating dead in a pool as he narrates the story that led to his fate.
Gillis got involved with Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a silent film star whose glory days are behind her. She's famously still ready for her closeup, however, and contends she's still big, but "It's the pictures that got small."
Billy Wilder directed. Erich Von Stroheim and Nancy Olson also star.
The 4K restoration of Sunset Boulevard premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The restoration was made off of a surviving 35mm duplicate negative, referencing the Library of Congress's print.
It also includes a 5.1 sound mix using Park Road Post's technology to isolate dialogue. Park Road restored the footage in Peter Jackson's documentaries They Shall Not Grow Old and The Beatles: Get Back.
The Fathom Events theatrical re-release includes an introduction by Leonard Maltin.
The film is currently available on 4K UHD at home. The Broadway musical adaptation starring Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond plays through July 20.
Sunset Boulevard won Oscars for writing, art direction and Music out of 11 nominations.

Cyrus called the project "fabulous" and "super joyful." "I'm in ultimate kind of fulfillment with this project, the music itself, the film -- I'm just really proud of the outcome," she said. Harrison Ford Lands First-Ever Emmy Nomination For ‘Shrinking'
Harrison Ford is finally an Emmy nominee. The superstar landed his first nomination on Tuesday for his role as therapist Dr. Paul Rhoades in Shrinking, in the category of best supporting actor in a comedy series. He is nominated alongside Shrinking co-star Michael Urie as well as Ike Barinholtz (The Studio), Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons), Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live). Look: HBO's 'Harry Potter' series enters production in England
July 15 (UPI) -- HBO announced production has commenced on its Harry Potter series, and photos were released showing Dominic McLaughlin and Nick Frost in costume as Harry and Hagrid, respectively. The cable network said the show, which is scheduled to release in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max, has entered production at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. Photos were posted to social media showing McLaughlin and Frost in costume on set. HBO also announced new additions to the cast, including Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. Previously-announced cast members include Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. The series, based on the series of books by J.K. Rowling, is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner.
