Key LB target previews decision, will commit on Saturday

Key LB target previews decision, will commit on Saturday

USA Today6 days ago
FSU is doing its thing on the recruiting trail, that's undeniable. However, they're still looking to be better at bringing in linebackers. They have three-star Karon Maycock committed, but he'll make his final decision on Monday. So, four-star Rodney Colton Jr. has certainly become an important recruit in Tallahassee.
Colton Jr. is down to Florida State, the Colorado Buffaloes, and the Ole Miss Rebels. The process hasn't been exactly easy for the Newman, Georgia, product as he explained recently.
"It was fun at first, now it is just hell," Colton Jr. told Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com. "I am going to be praying a lot; just letting God take me and lead me to the right school. They are three good schools with good coaches. I just want to pray about who is going to develop me and make me ready for the next level.
"I have a family to feed. That's all I'll say. My family - my mom, siblings - and God will help me decide."
Florida State was late in offering Colton Jr., as they didn't extend one until January. He was on campus in April as well for an unofficial visit, and he returned in June for an official visit.
That has allowed Colton Jr. to build a few relationships within the staff. One person in particular has helped FSU in their recruitment of Colton Jr. over the last several months.
"(Special teams coordinator and linebackers) coach (John) Papuchis is just a great guy, just like the rest of them. I have heard he put some guys in the league before, including Ernie Sims. He did everything I want to do."
Speaking of his June visit, Colton Jr. left Tallahassee with the Seminoles as his top choice.
"FSU is my top, I ain't going to lie," Colton Jr. told Noles247. "They beat the school I was looking at. Right now, they're in the lead."
Colton Jr. did take official visits to Ole Miss and Colorado as well in June. So, only time will tell if Florida State did enough to add the blue-chip talent to their linebacker room.

2027 Notre Dame linebacker commit Ellis McGaskin praised for his football IQ

Notre Dame linebacker commit Ellis McGaskin exhibits quickness and explosiveness when he makes plays on Friday nights, but his defensive coordinator says it's his football IQ that separates the Williamson (Mobile, AL) product from the rest. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Class of 2027 four-star recruit loves to watch film, which has impressed his DC, Jon Mitchell. "I think the part that people don't see is his ability to watch film and take it to the game," said Mitchell to Irish Sports Daily. "There have literally been times where he walked in and said, 'Coach, I know every play they're going to run,'" he says. "And I'm like, 'Huh? I don't even know what plays they're going to run yet. What you got?'" McGaskin committed to the Fighting Irish two weeks ago over offers from major programs such as LSU, Florida, Ohio State and Michigan, among several others. He was a star early on, excelling at running back on varsity as an eighth-grader before taking over for linebacker Robert Woodyard after he moved on to Auburn. McGaskin was ND's second commit in the 2027 class after the pledge of long snapper Sean Kraft. Florida football adds blue-chip ATH Heze Kent to 2026 recruiting haul

It may be the dog days of summer, but Florida football's recruiting efforts remain in high gear. On Saturday, the Gators added four-star athlete Heze Kent out of Brunswick (Georgia) to their 2026 recruiting class. The 6-foot-6-inch, 310-pound prospect chose the Orange and Blue from a list of 38 offers, which included the Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes and Texas Longhorns, who were included among his top four destinations. Kent's main focus when evaluating various schools was the ability to remain at the tight end position, where he has logged the most time during his prep playing days. However, his size and athleticism make him a great fit on both the offensive and defensive lines — and many programs have noted this — but Florida was among the few who believed in his ability to play tight end. To that point, his relationship with offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Russ Callaway helped seal the deal on his verbal pledge. "That's like a father or a brother to me," Kent told Swamp247. "My coach had told me how he was as a person, like the same person he is on the field is the same person he is off." He also added, "My relationship with Florida is how you see Kyrie (Irving) and LeBron (James)." Heze Kent's Recruiting Summary Kent is ranked No. 149 overall and No. 9 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 158 and 14, respectively. "One of the more unique evaluations in the 2026 cycle," 247Sports national analyst Hudson Standish. "Jumbo athlete hovering around 6-foot-6, 310 pounds who primarily plays tight end at the prep level but likely projects to offensive tackle or defensive tackle on Saturdays... Shows significant developmental blocking upside when asked to stay attached, possesses nimble movement skills and redirection ability that directly translate from his work as a forward on the basketball court... "Uncommon movement skills from a player of his size in the open field and will make acrobatic ladder-climbing snags in the red zone... Dominates South Georgia 5A competition in a variety of ways and has even found success as a ball carrier... Could start his career as a specialty tight end in 12/13 personnel groupings before transitioning to a long-term positional home... "Sheer size and athleticism point to obvious long-term NFL upside, especially if he embraces a role along the offensive or defensive line at the next level." Phil Steele lists MSU as the No. 10 hardest schedule in Big Ten this year

Toughest to Easiest Big Ten Schedules, per Phil Steele Does Michigan State football play a tough schedule in 2025? Phil Steele believes its one of the more favorable among the Big Ten. Steele has recently released a number of preseason rankings and notes ahead of the 2025 season kicking off next month. The latest to draw some attention was his ranking of schedules from toughest to easiest, which has Michigan State landing in the middle of the Big Ten. Steele ranks the Spartans' schedule as No. 10 among Big Ten teams. The toughest schedule belongs to Wisconsin and the easiest to Nebraska according to Steele. Here's a quick reminder of the Spartans schedule for this year: To me, this slate includes a number of challenges but also isn't anywhere as top heavy as last season. There aren't many "easy wins", though, with essentially nine of the games being considered toss-ups that could go either way. So the ranking of No. 10 among Big Ten teams seems about right to me.
