BBC admits Huw Edwards hasn't returned six-figure sum

Spectator9 hours ago
Now the beleaguered BBC is facing fury from its own staff – after it emerged that Huw Edwards has not paid back the £200,000 doled out to him after being arrested in November 2023 for possessing indecent images of children. Last summer the former TV star pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children at Westminster magistrates' court. But it quickly transpired that not only had Edwards, one of the Beeb's highest paid stars, received a £40,000 pay rise in the 12 months between March 2023-April 2024, he was paid a further £200,000 after his arrest – with BBC boss Tim Davies confirming last year that the corporation had been aware Edwards had been arrested over the most serious category of indecent images of children.
While the Beeb demanded Edwards return the six-figure sum over a year ago, the ex-presenter has still not done so. In a Freedom of Information response to the Sun, the broadcaster admitted:
Huw Edwards has not returned any money to him paid by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work for either BBC public service or the BBC's commercial operations. The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned.
And staff are not impressed that corporation chiefs have been unable to recoup the cash. One insider told the newspaper:
Everyone is raging about it – firstly at Huw, who is a disgrace, secondly that gutless bosses seem unwilling or unable to do anything about it.
Mr S would remind readers that, at the time, Davies defended Edwards' £40,000 salary rise and defended he had been paid off, claiming:
No-one wants to waste a pound but we need to act proportionately and fairly and I think that's what we did. Prior to any breaking of the (Edwards) story, people do get pay rises for extended responsibility and more hours' work. So that's fairly normal, and that's what resulted in the change.
Dear oh dear. It's yet another unpleasant twist in the whole sorry saga…

Chris Robshaw is forced to invest in top-price security to protect his family after being targeted by a stalker which nearly led him to turn down Strictly

Strictly Come Dancing star Chris Robshaw was forced to invest in top-of-the-range security to keep his family safe from the campaign of harassment by a female stalker over the past year. The former rugby player was one of the 15 celebrities to be announced for the BBC show last week, but it has since emerged he almost turned down the opportunity due to the situation. And now friends of the 39-year-old told the Mail about the toll it has taken on his wife, the opera singer Camilla Kerslake, on her mental health after she has been 'left scared to leave the house on her own with the kids'. Ms Kerslake, 37, shares Hunter, five, and 18-month-old Wilder, with her husband of seven years and a source close to the family said: 'Particularly when she was post-partum, she was petrified she wouldn't be able to outrun this individual. 'Normally she's unbreakable, the backbone of the family, but this has reduced her to a shell of the strong woman we all know. For Chris, watching this has been heartbreaking. 'They have invested in top-of-the-range security systems to keep the family safe.' While the identity of the stalker has not been revealed, it is known that the former Harlequins captain briefly met her twice at work events last year. Instead of asking for presents for her birthday, it can be revealed Ms Kerslake requested security upgrades to their Surrey mansion, which last year she gave OK magazine a guided tour of. The source continued: 'They've talked about the idea of a security guard dog because they love their animals but also Camilla especially, would feel more protected. 'It's heartbreaking that it's come to this but that's how seriously they are taking it. 'This stalker business is no joke. She's destroyed the lives of small business owners, families, and left others thousands of pounds out of pocket. 'The claims she makes are sickening, and some of her victims have been left struggling mentally after their ordeal.' Six months after meeting the woman, Mr Robshaw was then said to have been targeted by the woman, who proceeded to threaten violence and spread false allegations about him and his colleagues, after which he contacted the police. It is reported the woman, who is now on the National Police Wanted List, has fled the country and is being pursued by the police. This year's Strictly cast includes Love Island star Dani Dyer, Geordie Shore's Vicky Pattison, EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn, Lioness Karen Carney, Lorraine Showbiz correspondent Ross King and influencer Ellie Goldstein, who made history when she became the first model with Down syndrome to cover British Vogue magazine. Rugby player Chris, Neighbours actor Stefan Dennis, YouTuber George Clarke, Doctor Who actress Alex Kingston, The Apprentice star Tom Skinner and sportsman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will also be taking to the Strictly ballroom next month. The BBC show has endured its fair share of controversy in recent months, with it alleged earlier this month that BBC had hired a law firm to probe allegations of drug taking by two individuals. One of the stars involved in the drugs probe was also suspected of drinking while working on the show after crew smelt alcohol on their breath. Wynne Evans, 53, who competed on the show in 2024, was also accused of inappropriate behaviour and forced to apologise for making an unacceptable sexual remark on stage at a press event, which led to him resigning from the Strictly tour. In 2023, actress Amanda Abbington, 51, complained about professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, 34, being 'unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean' during their rehearsals which she said caused her to quit midway through the season. And in the same year, former Love Island contestant Zara McDermott, 28, was left 'incredibly distressed' following her experience in the training room with Graziano Di Prima, 31, who admitted to kicking the documentary maker, resulting in his axing.

Strictly Come Dancing star Chris Robshaw ready to quit BBC show over crazed stalker

Strictly Come Dancing star Chris Robshaw has told pals he would quit the show "without hesitation" if his stalking hell got worse and put wife Camilla and their kids at risk Rugby ace Chris Robshaw informed the police before his own family that he was considering signing up for Strictly Come Dancing after being targeted by a female stalker. The former England rugby star, 39, called in the cops after the woman threatened him with violence and spread false allegations about him and his opera singer wife Camilla Kerslake, 39. And a pal told the Mirror how he sought the permission of officers assigned to his case to get the green light to do the BBC show. The friend said: 'Before signing up, he had to tell his case officer that he was doing the show, going as far to ask for their blessing as such. The Police were told about Strictly, before he told his own family. He was one of the last celebrities to sign up, because he was taking the right measures to secure his family, before signing on the dotted line'. The stalking began six months after the woman met him briefly during two work events last year. She is understood to have left the country and is on the National Police Wanted List. Chris has said he would even be prepared to quit Strictly if things got worse. The source added: 'Chris has made it clear that his family always comes first. He told friends that if this situation ever put Camilla or the children at risk, he'd walk away from Strictly without hesitation. "He almost pulled out of the show altogether but changed his mind because he wants his son to see him out there, embracing something new and fun. He doesn't want fear to win.' Opening up about the ordeal, the pal told how his wife Camilla was too scared to leave the house at times because of the woman. The pal said: 'This woman is unhinged and nobody knows what her next move will be. Camilla has been left petrified about leaving the house with the children. "She's confided in friends that she has even run through scenarios in her head of how she would protect them if this individual were to approach - 'that's how real the fear has been utterly consuming — their lives have been hijacked by this ordeal.' Chris earned 66 caps for England, captaining them 43 times and leading the team to a Six Nations Grand Slam victory in 2016. A spokesperson for Chris told the Mirror: 'This is an ongoing police investigation, and therefore we are unable to comment at this time. Chris will not be commenting further.' Speaking about joining Strictly, Rob said previously: 'This is about as far out of my comfort zone as it gets! I'm hoping to take my dad dancing to a whole new level, and my mum can't wait to drag me along to her Zumba class. Let's see if a rugby sidestep works in the Cha Cha Cha.'

UK viewers can now watch 'riveting' New Zealand crime drama

A crime drama that left viewers 'hooked' is now available to stream in full for free. Set in New Zealand, The Gone begins with the disappearance of an Irish couple – Ronan (Simon Mead) and Sinead (Rachel Morgan) – from the fictional rural town of Mt Affinity. Although he's just handed in his resignation after 20 years in the job, Dublin detective Theo Richter (Richard Flood) is sent across the world to assist alongside local police officers Diana Huia (Acushla-Tara Kupe), who is undertaking her first ever investigation. The case also echoes a similar occurrence 17 years prior, when a pair of murders were committed in the same town, with the killer never caught. The police then have to deal with a community's 'growing disquiet' that the murders and disappearances may be linked. Cue plenty of twists and turns, with the six-part series also incorporating a storyline centred on the Māori community who are contended with a development that wants to acquire sacred land. Meanwhile an Irish journalist whose arrived in town also goes missing herself. A lot of really good dramas coming out of New Zealand & Australia lately and this is definitely one of them, 'Barbara posted on IMDB. 'As a fan of Scandinavian-set noir crime series, I've been looking forward to The Gone, and to see how it would work. I wasn't disappointed. The weaving of Kiwi and Irish themes, cast and cultures worked really well. Sometimes, this approach can feel forced but for The Gone it felt authentic and relatable,' Shelley shared. 'I did not have any expectations but, believe me, it's worth watching. The first season has a crazy ending, and I was not even close to guess the ending. For that reason, I can assure you that this series does not have a simple or boring storyline,' Itria added. More Trending After the first season ended on an almighty cliffhanger, the new episodes see Diana disappear herself. 'When it appears she went missing while chasing a lead on the town's historical Mountain Murders, the detectives enter a game of cat and mouse with 'The Goatman' who is back and more dangerous than ever,' the official synopsis teases. For those looking for the next crime drama to binge-watch, other Irish and Antipodean ones include Blue Lights, Crá, Bloodlands, Dublin Murders, Black Snow and The Tourist.
