North Carolina QB Max Johnson says he feared he may lose leg after season-ending injury in 2024 opener

North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson said Saturday that he feared he could lose his right leg following a nasty injury against Minnesota.
Johnson, the son of former NFL QB Brad Johnson, suffered a broken right leg in the Tar Heels' season opener against Minnesota in 2024. He said Saturday that he could feel his leg 'dangling' as he was helped off the field by trainers after the injury occurred, and there was a time after the injury that he wondered if he'd have to have his leg amputated.
'There was a point in time where I thought I was going to lose my leg,' Johnson said. 'Got blessed to be able to continue to play football and, man, what an honor it is just to be back playing.'
Johnson said that he underwent five surgeries following the injury. He got hurt in the third quarter of the Tar Heels' loss when his leg bent awkwardly. He said he knew when his leg felt like it was dangling that it was an injury to his femur.
'I was just so joyful to be out [at practice on Saturday],' Johnson said. 'I couldn't stop smiling. It wasn't like there was such a mental block [with rehab], just the daily grind of kind of being in the training room and continuing to work on scar tissue massages, the STEM machines, the running on the water treadmill, it was just the daily grind that kind of helped me get over the mental block as you would say.'
'I didn't really have just like 'Oh I'm never going to be able to do this again' even though it took me a while to start walking. I remember taking my first steps and just being so happy in that moment. And man, I was just so happy to be out there today with my teammates again. I kind of felt like myself again.'
Johnson is competing with South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez to be UNC's starting quarterback in Bill Belichick's first season. The former Texas A&M and LSU QB transferred to North Carolina after two seasons with the Tigers and two seasons with the Aggies. Over four seasons at the two SEC schools, he was 474-of-784 passing for 5,852 yards and 47 TDs with 12 interceptions.

Atalanta will meet for Muniz and Mateta in striker search

Atalanta are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Fulham centre-forward Rodrigo Muniz, with a meeting also planned for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. According to Sky Sport Italia, 24-year-old Muniz is increasingly seen as the hot favourite to reinforce the attack in Bergamo following Mateo Retegui's record breaking transfer to Al-Qadsiyah. The Brazilian found the net 11 times with two assists in the Premier League last season and his contract only runs to June 2026, although the club does have an option to extend by another year. Formerly of Flamengo, Muniz made the €8m transfer to Fulham in 2021. (Photo by) Sky Sport Italia also warn that Atalanta directors might use the trip to England to have other meetings too, specifically with Crystal Palace. This is because Mateta is seen as another alternative for the attack, even after the reported €34.7m proposal was rejected. He recently turned 28 and had an impressive 14 goals with two assists in 37 Premier League appearances last term.

Kyle Shanahan: Jake Moody's still competing with whoever's out there

The 49ers released veteran kicker Greg Joseph on Monday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan stopped short of saying that means Jake Moody will definitely be handling the kicking duties in the season opener. Shanahan said that "roster numbers" led to the decision to cut Joseph because the 49ers need healthy bodies at other spots at this point in training camp. Shanahan said he would have liked to see the competition play out longer under different circumstances, but said he thinks Moody knows that he is still competing against the larger pool of available kickers. "Whether you have one kicker in the building or two, which you rarely have two, kickers always know they're competing with whoever's out there," Shanahan said, via "I don't see it much different." Moody was a 2023 third-round pick and he's gone 45-of-59 on field goals through his first two seasons.
