Cardinals Surge Up Latest MLB Power Rankings
After winning their last eight games, the St. Louis Cardinals moved up six spots in this week's MLB.com Power Rankings.
The team took two of three games against the New York Mets before completing back-to-back sweeps of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals from Sunday, May 4 through Sunday, May 11.

The victorious week pushed the Cardinals from No. 23 to No. 17 on MLB.com's list - the team's highest ranking of the season, so far.
Will Leitch of MLB.com attributed stand-out center fielder Victor Scott II's 11-game hitting streak as a "primary reason" for St. Louis' eight-game win streak. The 24-year-old went 5-for-15 (.333) in five games last week while scoring four times, currently carrying a .357 on base percentage on the year.

The Cardinals also saw an uptick in production from Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras and Lars Nootbaar as the offense finished the week with eight batters totaling at least five at-bats hitting higher than .250.

Arenado - who missed Wednesday's game with a back issue - slashed .375/.412/.625 in four games during the week, collecting six hits - including a double and home run - scoring four times and driving in two runs.
Contreras also picked up a double and a home run, finishing the week with four RBI and slashing .286/.500/.571 with five walks and four runs.
Nootbaar carried a .524 slugging percentage through 21 at-bats, picking up two doubles and a home run to drive in four and score three times. Three walks pushed his on base percentage up to .375 in that five-game span.
With the return of Ivan Herrera, who had two hits - including a double - and two RBI in seven at-bats last week, the Cardinals are looking to keep rolling through the East in Philadelphia during a three-game set this week.

Detroit Lions signing Trystan Colon as insurance with Frank Ragnow retiring: Report
It didn't take long for the Detroit Lions to find a backup plan at center. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Lions have signed offensive lineman Trystan Colon to a one-year deal. Colon, 27, has played in 51 NFL games for two teams over five seasons, most recently for the Arizona Cardinals in 2024. He was undrafted out of Missouri in 2020. Advertisement Colon, formerly known as Colon-Castillo, played in all 17 games for the Cardinals in 2024, making a career-high seven starts. He has made four career starts at center, all with the Baltimore Ravens from 2020-22, and 11 starts at right guard from 2023-24 with the Cardinals. The signing follows the retirement of longtime Lions center Frank Ragnow, who announced his retirement via Instagram on Monday. Ragnow, a first-round pick in 2018, was the Lions' starting center from 2018-24, making 96 starts. ANALYSIS: Lions lose one of their most critical players. The road to the Super Bowl just got harder. Among the options the Lions are considering to replace Ragnow is 2025 second-round draft pick Tate Ratledge, who has been taking snaps at center during organized team activities. Ratledge primarily served as a right guard in college for the Georgia Bulldogs, but has been praised by members of the Lions staff for his versatility. Why Mets sluggers are using a sledgehammer in the on-deck circle
Why Mets sluggers are using a sledgehammer in the on-deck circle You may have noticed that two players on the New York Mets recently started doing something a bit unusual to prepare for their at-bats. The Mets, who currently have one of the best records in the National League, have two particularly hot bats on their roster with Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo. During their recent series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two players were seen holding something that looked a bit like a sledgehammer while in the on-deck circle. It is pretty funny to see two baseball players look like construction workers, but there is a perfectly good reason for the decision. According to SNY's Steve Gelbs, this is something that Alonso brought to the team. Here is more from Gelbs: "A very unconventional approach from Brandon Nimmo in the on-deck circle, swinging a sledgehammer. We saw it for the first time yesterday. I asked Nimmo about it. He said it's actually something that Pete Alonso brought to the team. He's had it since spring training and uses it in the batting cages before the games to get set for his swings." According to Gelbs, before the game against the Dodgers, Nimmo asked Mets hitting coach Eric Chavez if there was any rule about bringing it out to on-deck circle. Chavez said there is not so now, two nights in a row, Alonso and Nimmo are using an eight-pound sledgehammer (instead of a baseball donut) to practice their swings.
