It was the media, he said, that had "inflated" the prime minister's "balloon" and there was not much substance in him.
"You know what is the biggest problem in
politics
... No, Narendra Modi is not a big problem," he said, responding to a voice in the crowd.
"Main aapko bata raha hoon, ye aapne apne sir pe chadha rakha hai, ye koi problem nahi hai. Ye jo media wale hain inhone iska gubbara bana rakha hai. Ye koi problem nahi hai. (I am telling you, you have given him too much importance, he is not a problem)," the
Congress leader
said.

"Earlier, I had not met him, but now I have met him 2-3 times. Now I understand there is nothing - he is all show, no substance. You have not met him, I have," Gandhi said.
Addressing the gathering, Gandhi also urged
OBC youth
to realise their strength.
"My biggest complaint from OBC youth is that they don't understand their strength. Once they understand their strength, the whole scenario will change," he said.

BJP announces protest against govt in Mandi on Aug 6

Shimla: Himachal BJP president Dr Rajeev Bindal on Friday announced that the saffron party would stage a massive protest on August 6 at Mandi against the state govt's "repressive policies" and for registering "false cases" against its political opponents. He claimed that the Congress dispensation made it a routine to register cases and file chargesheets against anyone raising their voice against the govt. An FIR was registered against the BJP leaders in Sirmaur, besides filing cases against 72 disaster-hit people who lost their land and houses in the June 30 monsoon disaster in Thunag of Mandi district for the alleged disrespect to the national flag, said Bindal. The BJP leader also claimed that the state govt spent Rs 150 crore between 2022 and 2025 for the monsoon disaster. However, he added that the central govt released Rs 7,513 crore to the state besides providing MGNREGA funds. Bindal also slammed the state govt for the resumption of lottery sales. He said the BJP govt banned the sale of lottery tickets in 1999, but it was in 2004 that the Congress govt started it again. Though the sale of lottery was banned again in 2007, the Congress govt allowed lottery sales in a cabinet meeting on Thursday, he added. MSID:: 123046517 413 |

'Absolutely not': Shashi Tharoor rejects Trump's dead economy remark

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday rejected US President Donald Trump 's India a "dead economy" remark, saying this was not the case. Trump called India a "dead economy", sparking a political firestorm in India, hours after he announced a 25 per cent tariff on import of Indian goods along with an unspecified "penalty" for buying "vast majority" of Russian military equipment and crude oil. Significantly, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday echoed Trump's criticism of the Indian economy and said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman knows that the country's economy is "dead". Live Events The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha also alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is "running the country to the ground". With the US announcing the imposition of 25 per cent tariff and penalties on India, Tharoor on Thursday said it may be just a "bargaining tactic" as trade negotiations are on, asserting that "we must give strong support to our negotiators" to find the best possible deal. Tharoor, however, added that if a good deal is not possible, "we may have to walk away".

PM's Assam visit on Sept 8 to honour Bhupen, launch Rs 9,900cr infra projects

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Assam on Sept 8 to inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of music maestro and Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika. Prior to that, he will inaugurate a Rs 4,200 crore bio-ethanol plant in Golaghat and the Guwahati Ring Road project in Mangaldai, which has a project cost exceeding Rs 5,700 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a press conference, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this on Friday. He said the Prime Minister will first arrive at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district and dedicate the bio-ethanol plant to the nation. Developed as a joint venture between NRL and Finnish partners, the facility is India's first bamboo-based bio-ethanol refinery. It is designed to process up to 3,00,000 metric tonnes of bamboo annually to produce 49,000 metric tonnes of ethanol. Following a successful trial run in Dec 2024, the plant is expected to begin commercial production by mid-2025. The project is expected to benefit around 30,000 rural households and marks a significant milestone in India's green energy and biofuel sector. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the construction of the much-anticipated Guwahati Ring Road in Mangaldai, the CM added. The project includes building a major bypass, widening key stretches of NH-27, and constructing a bridge over the Brahmaputra river to connect Narengi in Guwahati with Kuruwa in Darrang district. The 121-km project, aimed at decongesting city traffic and improving connectivity across Assam, was awarded to Infracon Pvt Ltd by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in April. The concession period is 30 years, including four years for construction, with completion expected by Dec 2027. Later in the day, the PM will arrive in Guwahati to inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of legendary musician Bhupen Hazarika, the CM said. "The state govt has made meticulous plans to celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner. A total of 1,000 singers — from senior artists to the youngest performers — will present a musical medley of a few of Bhupen Hazarika's most famous songs. Several programmes have also been planned as part of the yearlong celebration," the CM added. To honour Hazarika's legacy, the state govt will also release a special biography and a commemorative coin.
