IIT Madras launches 2 indigenously developed silicon photonics products

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Saturday launched two indigenously developed
silicon photonics
products, a first for India.
The products designed and developed indigenously at CoE-CPPICS at the
IIT Madras
can be quickly adopted by the market.
"Indigenously developed field deployable silicon photonic-based
quantum random number generator
(QRNG) module is a pride for India. The product has been delivered to
DRDO
to help in advanced quantum cryptography," said S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary,
MeitY
, while congratulating CoE-CPPICS.
The two products launched during the occasion include the Fibre-Array Unit (FAU) attachment tool for Photonic Chip Packaging and the silicon photonic QRNG (Quantum Random Number Generator).
The QRNG module will be available commercially for potential customers through the CPPICS spin-off start-up "
LightOnChip
".
The key applications of QRNG are
IT security
for military and defence, Cryptographic algorithms,
Quantum key distribution
(QKD), Scientific Modelling and Simulations, Financial transactions/ Blockchain/ OTP, Gaming Applications, the Insititute said
"Silicon Photonics is an emerging technology that will certainly help design much more efficient and complex hardware for the future. I am very happy that the Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS Centre at IIT Madras has now come out with demonstrable products that can be quickly adopted by the market. We hope that multiple such products will continue to come in the future," said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.
Photonic packaging and assembly are a complex and multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing process. To make a Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC)-enabled module perform according to specification, sub-micron precision alignment and bonding process are required.
At the same time, precise thermal management is required to maintain the thermo-optic stability of the signals.
CoE-CPPICS aims to provide better solutions for microwave and quantum photonics applications such as advanced photonic processors to be used in high-performance RF transceivers, scalable linear optical quantum computing processors for the next-generation qubit computation, and chip-level quantum key generation and distribution circuits, etc.
CPPICS is actively developing indigenous PIC design rules and hardware infrastructure for precision packaging for system-level applications.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has organised a two-day demo day on June 9 and 10, where candidates who have qualified in the Joint Engineering Examinations (JEE) will interact with students, alumni, and teachers and visit the facilities on the campus. Candidates unable to travel may participate in the online event to be held on June 3. Offline events are being held at six cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In Chennai, around 300 students and their parents will participate in the event. The students will also have an opportunity to attend classes that will be conducted by professors. They will visit laboratories and the Centre for Innovation. The aim of the effort is to help students decide their course of study. Institute director V. Kamakoti said the top 100 ranked students invariably choose computer science and engineering over core engineering subjects. 'We conduct several efforts like Shaastra, Saarang, Open House, and CFI Day. We want students to opt for core engineering over CSE,' he said. The institute has introduced awards to honour pre-undergraduate teachers whose efforts were instrumental in their students making it to the institute in 2024-25. The 'First Principles' Teachers' award (FPTA) recognises the teachers who helped the students understand concepts in physics, chemistry, and mathematics within the IIT-JEE syllabus. Institute director V. Kamakoti said students had two methods of learning; one is rote and arriving at the right answer by elimination in JEE. The other is understanding the concept and applying them to arrive at solutions. 'This is the ideal way of learning. This is how school education should be. We wanted to recognise such teachers,' he said. 'We asked the students who was their inspiration and we asked the first year students to nominate their teachers. The second group of students consistently come up with unexpected solutions. This was the reason we decided to honour them,' he said. Sabitha G.J., mathematics teacher from Ida Scudder ICSE School in Vellore, has a personalised way of teaching. Her student Adhil Ahmed, a student of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science said his teacher had motivated and inspired him. 'He would sit alone and solve mathematic problems in the afternoon. I sat with him and encouraged him,' she said. She sometimes uses dance movements and rhymes to teach concepts. Chemistry teacher Anurooop Naik of Bengaluru was nominated by his student Arun Radhakrishnan, a student of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Mr. Naik said he would use daily incidents to explain concepts. He had a nickname for his students using chemical compounds that helped students remember the concepts. Mr. Naik is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and taught class 11 and 12 students in Srinagar for three years. He says they were the most enjoyable years so far. He plans to set up his own institute when he finds motivated physics and mathematics teachers. Chennai: To attract top rankers of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will offer demo classes, a glimpse of campus life, and organise interactions with current students for JEE aspirants and their parents on its campus on June 7 and 8. The JEE (advanced) results are expected on June 2. Further, it will organise demo sessions in other cities such as Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi on June 4 and 5. There will be an online session on June 3 as well. "This year, we are aiming to diversify the choices of the top rankers as, for the past 10 years, all top 100 JEE rankers have chosen only computer science engineering. We will introduce the students to opportunities in core engineering branches such as mechanical, civil, and electrical during these interactions," said V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras. "Though seats in all branches are eventually filled through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling, we want students to pursue the branches they are interested in instead of going by the popular choice," he added. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is inviting JEE aspirants and their parents to attend a demo day events that will be held in both physical mode in several cities across India as well in online mode. It is an opportunity for them to interact with current students, faculty, and alumni. Physical events will be held at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Vijayawada and Hyderabad, as mentioned in the press release. Interested JEE candidates have to register at since there are limited seats, said IIT-Madras in a statement. Through the demo day events, students can also seek clarification about recent changes, like the introduction of new courses. IIT Madras has introduced two new BTech Programmes – Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM) and Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME) — besides a BTech in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) that was introduced last year. Students unable to travel to IIT Madras or any of the six other venues can also participate in an online session scheduled for June 3, during which Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, other faculty, and alumni will respond to various queries related to academic and non-academic aspects of life on campus. The current IIT Madras academic system aims to offer students flexibility in their choice of courses via the elective system. Students can choose between their courses as electives, including courses from any other department. Students can also opt for a 'minor' or switch to an 'IDDD' (Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degree). Workshops for first-year students have been reintegrated into the semester, adding two more weeks of vacation time. Furthermore, a compulsory recreation course (Pass/Fail, 2 credits) has been introduced for students in the first two semesters, promoting a healthy work-life balance. The institute has decided to offer an entrepreneurship elective course in the third/fourth semester for interested students. IIT Madras had announced separate admission categories for those excelling in Sports and Fine Arts. The Institute has introduced Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) Admission to undergraduate programmes from the Academic year 2025 – 26. The 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) was introduced from the last academic year of 2024-2025. This initiative is to recognise and reward talented students who have excelled in sports. This programme encourages deserving students to pursue higher education while continuing to excel in their sports. Under both these initiatives, two seats per programme will be allotted in all BTech and BS programmes of IIT Madras. Of the two seats in each programme, one seat will be female-only, and the other will be gender-neutral. IIT Madras Alumni and CSR partners have rallied together to provide financial support to 100 per cent of BTech students whose annual parental income is in the 'Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh' category for two consecutive years (2022-23 & 2023-24). The 'Merit-cum-Means' (MCM) Scholarship is one among the numerous financial assistance and scholarship support provided to students by IIT Madras, the Central and State Governments. SC/ST students admitted to the BTech program are exempted from paying tuition fees, irrespective of their parental income. Further, IIT Madras is also introducing the 'First Principles Teachers Award' this year to recognize exceptional educators who have made an impact on their students' educational journeys through teaching from first principles at a pre-UG level.
