Economic and trade empowerment

ROME: Italy is looking to Malaysia to partner with, in its quest to level up in the economic and trade sectors, says Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.
Tajani, who is also Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, said Malaysia is one of the most progressive nations around with whom it had been building partnerships in the two sectors.
'The relations between Italy and Malaysia have always been good. Now, we look to build it further,' he said at a courtesy call to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here.
He reiterated what Anwar said earlier about the importance of having peace and stability as the foundation to support and grow the business sector.
'We have many big companies and we are ready for joint ventures and investments abroad.
'Italy is also the second most industrious country in Europe,' he said, adding that this only meant Italy had a lot to offer.
Anwar said Malaysia is an excellent partner to have since it has policies that are dynamic and clear.
He said PETRONAS, being one of the top companies globally, is more than ready to move together with the European nation.
Asean, he said as regional chair, is the most peaceful area in the world and economically most promising.

'This will certainly pave the way for a greater cooperation.'
He expressed gratitude for Tajani's visit as it reflected both nations' commitment to strengthen bilateral relations based on mutual respect and understanding.
'We have been talking about expanding our cooperation in various fields, including relations between Asean and the European Union,' he added.
Anwar said they also spoke about regional and global conflicts including that in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran and Israel.
He also spoke about his admiration for the rich Italian history, literature and art.
He mentioned how touched he was when reading about Dante's Inferno, listening to the world-famous song Caruso and how the works of Leonardo da Vinci had impacted the world.
His remarks brought loud and appreciative applause from the Italian audience at the meeting.
He said he watched how Italy transformed itself, embracing the AI (artificial intelligence) realm, 'and I look forward to increasing cooperation with Italy'.
Anwar also met the Muslim community in Rome headed by Italian Muslim Community Association deputy president Imam Yahya Pallavicini and Italian Cultural Centre secretary-general Abdellah Redouane to exchange ideas on strengthening the community's development.
Earlier, the Prime Minister met translator Andrea Fais and Stefano Bonilauri, publisher of The Asian Renaissance, written almost 30 years ago.
'I'm touched that they chose to translate this into Italian,' Anwar said of his book that spoke about the rise of the Asian civilisation through culture, education and justice in the face of Western dominance.
'This effort will undoubtedly close the gap between Western and Eastern understanding, especially in a divisive world we live in.'

EU chief says Brussels ‘ready' for US trade deal ahead of talks

AARHUS: The EU is 'ready for a deal' with the United States, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday before negotiators meet in Washington before a July 9 deadline. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic is in Washington and due to meet his US counterparts later Thursday. The commission, leading trade policy for the 27-nation bloc, has until Wednesday next week to strike an agreement or see President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs snap back. If no deal is reached, the default tariff on EU imports is expected to double to 20 percent or even higher -- Trump having at one point threatened 50 percent. 'We are aiming at the ninth of July,' von der Leyen told reporters in Aarhus, Denmark. 'It's a huge task because we have the largest trade volume globally between the European Union and the United States,' worth 1.5 trillion euros ($1.8 trillion). 'What we are aiming at is an agreement in principle,' she added. The size of trade between the two transatlantic allies meant an agreement in detail was 'impossible' to conclude in the 90-day window ending next week, she added. Von der Leyen's comments came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated his call for a 'quick and simple' EU deal with Washington -- a matter of necessity for key industries from pharmaceuticals to engineering and automobiles. The EU chief also made it clear that Brussels would not hold back from taking countermeasures to protect the European economy if talks fell short. 'We want a negotiated solution, but you all know that at the same time, we're preparing for the possibility that no satisfactory agreement is reached,' she said. 'This is why we consulted on a rebalancing list, and we will defend the European interest as needed,' she added. 'In other words, all the interim instruments are on the table.' The EU has prepared counter-tariffs on US goods worth around 100 billion euros if talks yield no positive outcome. – AFP

Malaysia, Italy ink major deal on carbon capture and biochemical tech

ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that agreements between Petronas and Italy's ENI will spearhead one of the region's largest projects involving carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and biochemical technologies. Anwar said the initiative is expected to grow further, with new interest from Japanese firms and Indonesia's state-owned oil company, Pertamina. "Once officially launched, this will become one of the largest projects in the region involving CCUS and biochemical technology between Petronas and ENI," he said. Anwar added that the project was aimed at building regional strength and would be expanded in collaboration with Indonesia, citing increasing cooperation between Pertamina and Petronas. He also said that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had expressed interest in having Japan involved in the project. Additionally, Anwar said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is working with several Italian firms, including APG, on the development of a cross-border power grid stretching from Vietnam to Singapore. "This is a project that also supports Asean cooperation initiatives," he said, highlighting the regional nature of the infrastructure. Anwar also said that a new agreement between Perodua and Magna Steyr on electric vehicle (EV) battery development is expected to be formalised by December this year. The Prime Minister is currently on an official visit to three countries, Italy, France, and Brazil, beginning July 1.

MIRI (July 3): Malaysia continues to make strides in exploring international markets as eight local companies participated in Fine Food New Zealand 2025, the largest biennial food trade exhibition in the Oceania region, held in Auckland from June 29 to July 1. Among the participants was IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, the sole representative from Sarawak, which showcased gluten-free cookies made from sago flour ― a product jointly formulated with CRAUN Research Sdn Bhd. Sharing his experience, IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd managing director Mohd Hafidz Rohani said Malaysia's involvement in the event opened up new opportunities for collaboration with local importers and distributors, particularly in the health-based and food innovation segments. Hafidz, who also serves as chairman of the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri, said the Malaysian exhibitors represented a wide spectrum of the food industry, including durian and pineapple products, ready-to-eat sambal, canned beverages, health items, fisheries products, and gluten-free foods. All participants were part of the Malaysian delegation under Pavilion Malaysia, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). Oceania, with a population exceeding 50 million people and a growing ASEAN community, presents strong potential for Malaysian companies to establish a foothold in the regional market. This sentiment was echoed by Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki, during the opening of Pavilion Malaysia at the exhibition. The Malaysia–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA), in force since 2010, has further facilitated the entry of Malaysian products into the New Zealand market. Hafidz said that the participation reflected the continued commitment of government agencies and industry players to expand the global reach of Malaysian products through high-impact trade platforms. The launch event was also attended by FAMA director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri and Perak State Executive Councillor for Women's Development, Family, Community Welfare, Entrepreneurs, and Cooperatives, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed. craun research Fine Food New Zealand 2025 gluten-free sago cookies
