Sangh backed Emergency under Deoras' leadership, says Maha Cong chief Sapkal

Time of India6 hours ago

Nagpur: Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Wednesday accused BJP of whitewashing its ideological past while launching selective attacks on the 1975 Emergency.
On its 50th anniversary, Sapkal pointed to the documented support of then RSS chief Balasaheb Deoras for Emergency and questioned why BJP distances itself from that legacy.
"Balasaheb Deoras not only supported the Emergency, but even publicly disassociated the Sangh from the JP movement. Does BJP disown his stand now," Sapkal asked at a press meet. He argued that former premier Indira Gandhi's decision was taken within constitutional bounds to prevent national unrest and contrasted it with what he termed an "undeclared Emergency" under the current regime.
Sharply reacting to the allegation, RSS publicity head Sunil Ambekar said thousands of Sangh volunteers were jailed and tortured during the Emergency. "Around 100 of them died in custody or due to the trauma of incarceration. Pandurang Kshirsagar Ji, then head of our national management committee, was among them. The Emergency remains a black spot on Indian democracy," he told TOI.
BJP's national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe told a packed audience in Nagpur that the "satyagraha movement by RSS and leaders like JP Narayan" was a reality check for Indira Gandhi, who was under the impression that people had accepted the Emergency.

"Of the 1.3lakh people who joined the movement, 1.1lakh were from RSS and its affiliates," he said.
Defending Indira Gandhi, Sapkal, however, said, "She lifted the Emergency, called for elections, and accepted defeat. Unlike today's govt, she didn't sell off national assets to corporate cronies," he said, referring to the privatisation of ports, airports, banks, mines, and Dharavi land over the past 11 years.
Sapkal also criticised a recent govt ad campaign to exclude the national emblem while prominently featuring the 'Sengol'.
"This is a symbolic attack on the Constitution. The ultimate goal is to replace it with Golwalkar's bunch of thoughts and create a theocratic state cloaked in cultural motifs," he alleged.
Congress has released a special issue of 'Janmanasachi Shidori' featuring counter-narratives from authors like Pupul Jayakar, Kumar Ketkar, and Sena MP Sanjay Raut, aimed at presenting "the truth of the Emergency beyond BJP's propaganda. He further demanded a probe into alleged voter list manipulation in Nagpur South West, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's home constituency.

NDMC approves mech sweepers, pink toiles and temple upkeep

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday approved a series of civic infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing public amenities in Lutyens' Delhi, including procurement of new mechanical road sweepers (MRS), construction of 'pink toilets' for women in all major markets, and the beautification of key temple complexes, officials said. NDMC on Wednesday approved a series of civic infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing public amenities in Lutyens' Delhi. (HT PHOTO) Wednesday's council meeting, chaired by area MLA and Delhi government minister Parvesh Verma, was also attended by New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj, NDMC chairperson Keshav Chandra, and vice chairman Kuljeet Chahal. Besides taking up policy matters, the council also unanimously passed a resolution condemning the imposition of Emergency in 1975, calling it a 'dark phase' that trampled civil liberties and democratic institutions. 'The resolution marks the 50th anniversary of Emergency and recalls how citizens' fundamental rights, civil liberties, and democratic institutions were brutally suppressed during the 21-month Emergency,' Chahal said. Among the major decisions was the launch of a comprehensive temple beautification plan. 'From Hanuman Mandir, Kali Mata Mandir, Valmiki Temple, Bhairon Temple — complexes of all major temples will be beautified for which a panel is being formed. Beautification efforts will include horticulture, lighting, and seating areas for devotees,' Verma said. To address dust pollution and ensure year-round road cleaning, NDMC approved the procurement of five new CNG-operated mechanical sweepers. Diesel-operated sweepers are no longer permitted under National Green Tribunal norms, and the Central Pollution Control Board will fund the ₹ 6.7 crore project. 'Our existing machines from 2017-18 break down frequently, impacting NDMC's ability to meet its daily cleaning target of 365km of roads,' Chahal added. Verma also announced a women-centric initiative to install at least one pink toilet in every market within NDMC limits. 'These facilities will be staffed entirely by women and include vending machines for sanitary napkins, baby care areas, and drinking water,' he said. The council also pledged to extend civic services to under-served areas such as JJ clusters and dhobi ghats. 'Seva Bastis and dhobi ghats must be part of our larger urban development agenda. This is about inclusive governance,' Verma said.

‘Kolkata airport's boundary should be sealed immediately': Suvendu Adhikari flags ‘security risk'

The leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for the immediate sealing of the boundary at Kolkata airport. West Bengal BJP leader and LOP Suvendu Adhikari expressed concerns over Kolkata airport's security and called for sealing off the boundaries.(HT Photo) Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said that the current situation at the airport poses a major security risk. 'What is happening at Kolkata Airport is a matter of great concern from a security perspective. Prayers are being performed on the ground. The boundary of Kolkata Airport is not being sealed,' he said. He expressed worry over the movement of outsiders in and around the airport premises. "People from outside are coming and going, and there is also connectivity to China and Bangladesh from here. We have demanded that the boundary (of Kolkata Airport) be sealed," Adhikari said. Adhikari also highlighted that two newly developed runways have still not been made operational despite being completed with central government funding. "The two new runways for which the central government allocated a budget, and whose work has also been completed, have not been made operational. Only a single runway is functional," he said. He attributed the delay in operating the new runway to an issue involving a religious structure. "The reason given is the relocation of the Mosque to the secondary runway. This cannot go on," Adhikari remarked. Calling for urgent action, he said, "The boundary wall should be closed immediately. The boundary of such a sensitive international airport should be sealed immediately." Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, "NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this." The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. (ANI)

BJP slams Congress on 50th Anniversary of Emergency, marks ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' with exhibition in Delhi

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, by the then Indira Gandhi-led Congress government, the BJP government in Delhi commemorated the day as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' by inaugurating a special exhibition at Central Park in Connaught Place. The exhibition was organised by the government's Department of Art, Culture and Language, in collaboration with the Hindi Academy. It was inaugurated by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Paying tribute to those who resisted the Emergency, the CM drew a parallel between the pro-democracy movement of 1975 and India's freedom struggle. She lashed out at the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government, calling it 'cruel, dictatorial, and insensitive.' 'The 21-month period that began on June 25, 1975, saw millions jailed without cause. There was no appeal, no argument, no hearing — it was the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy,' she said. Taking a dig at the Congress, she remarked: 'Those who once crushed democracy now ironically roam with the Constitution in their pockets, despite having disrespected it in the past.' She recalled the sacrifices of BJP leaders and veterans like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, Madan Lal Khurana, and Balraj Madhok, who were imprisoned during the Emergency. 'Their stories must be remembered by future generations,' she said. 'Such dark days will never return to this country, and the people will not tolerate any dictatorial attempt,' she said, adding that both the Centre and Delhi government remain committed to upholding the Constitution and its democratic values. She also announced a year-long series of programmes to honour the 'warriors of democracy' who fought against the Emergency. Minister of Art and Culture Kapil Mishra, whose department had curated the exhibition, said it showcases rare documents, many being displayed publicly for the first time. 'These documents expose how democracy was murdered during the Emergency,' he said. 'Overnight, the entire opposition was thrown behind bars, the courts were stripped of power, journalists were jailed, and media establishments shut down. The way India's democracy was attacked is something the country must never forget,' Mishra said. He called the exhibition 'not just a preservation of history, but a reminder of how democracy was defended through struggle and sacrifice.'
