Diversified conglomerate ITC Ltd is making significant strides in its sustainable materials and packaging capabilities, underscoring its focus on organic growth and long-term innovation, according to B. Sumant, Executive Director of ITC Ltd. In an interaction with, Sumant talks about the company's expansion plans, supply chain resilience, investments in advanced R&D and digital technologies, and more. Edited excerpts:ITC's paperboards and specialty paper division (PSPD) is a market leader in the value-added paperboard segment. It has sustained its leadership position over the years through focused innovations, the development of customised solutions for end-user industries, and capacity augmentation. It has leveraged its integrated business model and pioneering work in adopting Industry 4.0 technology.Similarly, ITC's packaging & printing business is one of the largest value-added converters of paperboard packaging in South Asia. It converts over 100,000 tonnes of paper, paperboard, and laminates per annum into a variety of value-added packaging solutions for the food and beverage, personal & home care products, quick service restaurants, and consumer goods industries.As part of the ITC Next Strategy, new vectors of growth are being nurtured at the convergence of mega trends in digital and sustainability , harnessing ITC's enterprise strengths. This includes developing alternative solutions to single-use plastic and addressing the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging. Between FY22 and FY25, ITC's sustainable products portfolio for plastic substitution grew 2.4 times, underscoring a decisive market shift toward responsible consumption.ITC's paperboards and packaging businesses are at the forefront of sustainable plastic substitution innovation, offering a robust portfolio of solutions that are replacing single-use plastics at scale. Among ITC's flagship offerings is the Filo Series—a versatile range of recyclable, industrially compostable, soil biodegradable, barrier-coated paperboards including FiloPack, FiloServe, FiloTub , FiloBev, and FiloBowl — designed for food service, delivery, and on-the-go consumption applications. The Filo Series products are also PFAS-free (forever chemicals).The company's innovation pipeline also encompasses FiloBev Mini—designed for on-the-go quick consumption of hot beverages; WrapWell—a recyclable food-grade paper replacing aluminium foil; BioSeal—a compostable, oil- and grease-resistant coating to replace plastics; and 'Germ-free coating'—a solution for microbial-free packaging surfaces addressing the consumer consciousness towards hygiene and safety. Similarly, there are many other innovative offerings.ITC adopts a differentiated, insight-led approach to sustainable packaging, grounded in design thinking, scientific rigour, and deep supply chain understanding. Recognising that each distribution channel, whether e-commerce, quick-commerce, or modern trade, demands distinct packaging attributes, ITC develops bespoke solutions that balance performance, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility.Partnerships with QSRs and DTH providers have resulted in the introduction of compostable solutions and recycled fibre moulds that replace disposable plastic. This tailored, channel-specific strategy enables ITC to deliver packaging that meets diverse operational and consumer needs while advancing the broader sustainability agenda.ITC's integrated strategy focuses on large-scale and impactful community-based waste management programmes as well as investments in cutting-edge sustainable innovations, anchored on a robust three-pronged framework of 'No plastic, Better Plastic and Less Plastic.' This innovative approach not only encourages ITC to continuously improve recyclability and optimise packaging across its own world-class FMCG brands but also enables it to offer a bouquet of sustainable packaging solutions for a range of consumer industries, replacing plastic with biodegradable materials designed for recycling.'No Plastic' packaging innovations in ITC's own FMCG business include the Aashirvaad Khapli Atta pack, which features an eco-friendly dual-layer 'bag in bag' design. In another example, the Sunfeast Farmlite Core Digestive large pack was launched in a 100% paper outer bag.Similarly, some of the recent 'Less Plastic' initiatives among ITC FMCG brands include design optimisation undertaken for the packaging of Engage deodorant spray cans, which resulted in a reduction of 31% in packaging weight.The total capacity of ITC's Paperboards & Specialty Paper Business is over 9.8 lakh MT/year at present, of which, the capacity of its value-added paperboard portfolio is 6.6 lakh MT/year.ITC ensures cost-effectiveness in sustainable packaging through a holistic, integrated value chain approach that spans innovation, manufacturing efficiency, and value chain security. The company follows design-to-cost principles to develop scalable, high-performing solutions that are both sustainable and affordable.Operational efficiencies are achieved with Industry 4.0 technologies, automation, and data-driven manufacturing processes, supported by lean manufacturing and TPM methodologies. At the supply end, ITC is strengthening domestic fibre value chains by expanding plantations and fibre catchments to secure competitive raw material sourcing.Innovation is central to ITC's sustainable solutions strategy. (Pic for representation) A month-long drive by the state tax and the central GST departments, which is still on, unearthed a massive scam involving over 233 bogus or non-existent firms, resulting in a loss of more than ₹120 crore to the state exchequer — and counting. 'On our part, we have caught 33 bogus/non-existent firms registered under the state GST. Action, including lodging of FIRs against them, is being taken,' UP state tax commissioner Nitin Bansal told HT. Another state tax department official revealed that two of the 33 firms, dealt in scraps and were based in Gorakhpur. 'One of these firms fraudulently claimed ICT of ₹18.96 crore and the other to the tune of ₹1.93 crore. FIRs have been lodged against both,' he said adding: 'We have cancelled registration of 31 other firms as they were not found to be in existence.' The official said about 200 other entities, all registered under central GST, were found to be paper firms involved in generating fake invoices to fraudulently claim input tax credit (ITC). 'These bogus or non-existent firms collectively claimed ITC worth ₹200 crore, resulting in a ₹100-crore loss to Uttar Pradesh, as ITC is shared equally between the centre and the state,' he revealed. Officials explained that ITC was meant to prevent tax cascading by allowing businesses to claim credit on the tax paid for inputs. However, in this case, the firms created fictitious transactions and invoices to falsely claim credit — effectively defrauding the government. The crackdown followed an internal review by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who also holds the commercial tax/GST portfolio, after the state recorded negative or flat GST growth in three months of the current financial year. The 4% decline in GST growth vis-a-vis the corresponding period of 2024 triggered panic in the government as GST is the main source of the state government's tax earnings. Principal secretary, state tax, M Devraj directed authorities to launch a statewide campaign to identify possible causes for the low GST collections, with focus on bogus firms. 'The reports of entire July have not been prepared yet. We expect the number of bogus/non-existent firms registered under the state GST to go up from 33,' the official said.

Aquaculture shock: Spare a lifeline for shrimp farmers reeling under US tariffs

The recent move by the US to impose a 25% basic tariff on shrimp imports from India has triggered uncertainties for the sector back home. This comes on top of existing anti-dumping and countervailing duties of approximately 8% on shrimp, pushing the total effective duty to 33%, which was just 7.5% before US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff announcements of 2 April. In recent years, Indian shrimp farming has shown an impressive performance. It grew at a compound annual growth rate of 18% between 2011 and 2023. This growth relied heavily on exports. Demand from the US has been a major driver of this increase. Consider the numbers. In 2023-24, India exported over $2.5 billion worth of shrimp to the US, making up nearly 38% of America's total shrimp imports, followed by Ecuador's share of 21%, Indonesia's 17% and Vietnam's 11% (ITC data, 2024). Also read: Trump's trade shock: There's a world beyond those stars and stripes However, major competitors of India in the US shrimp market have secured far more favourable terms in terms of import tariffs. Ecuador currently faces an effective duty of 18%, Indonesia's rate has dropped from 35% to 25.3% and Vietnam's has been reduced from a steep 46% to 20% following recent negotiations by these countries with the US. In contrast, India now faces an effective tariff of 33%, creating a 14 to 15 percentage point disadvantage compared to Ecuador, its closest competitor in US market. The widened tariff gap risks diminishing India's competitive edge and reducing its market share in the US, which would put pressure on Indian exporters, processors and farmers. India's 'revealed comparative advantage'—a measure of a particular good's concentration in a country's export basket in relation to its share of world trade—in shrimp exports is 4.4, lower than Ecuador's 16.0, highlighting Ecuador's stronger specialization and rapid growth through vertical integration. India primarily exports raw frozen shrimp, which make up about half of US imports. In 2024, India's average landing price in the US of this export was $7.69 per kg, compared to Ecuador's $7.06. Despite higher freight charges, India's cost advantage was on account of labour-intensive peeling and processing. However, the recent 25% US tariff threatens this competitiveness. Prepare for rising costs and shrinking margins: Even before this tariff increase, Indian shrimp farmers were facing lower profits due to high input costs. Shrimp feed, which makes up nearly 60% of total production costs, has seen the highest rise. Global inflation in feed ingredients like fishmeal and soybean, along with the depreciation of the rupee and supply chain glitches, has pushed feed prices up by 25-30% in the last three years. For small and medium farmers culturing Litopenaeus vannamei (white leg shrimp), the average production cost has risen to about ₹280- ₹300 per kg. However, with average farm-gate prices ranging between ₹340 and ₹360 per kg, profit margins have shrunk. If farm-gate prices drop below ₹280 per kg, many businesses incur losses. Also read: India may cut duties on US shrimp imports Indian processors are currently delivering past export orders, as the peak harvest and export period is on, with stocking underway in export destinations for a festive demand bounce. With the new American tariff rules, exporters may need to absorb the extra cost burden, reducing their margins. The impact will percolate to farmers, who are already operating on low margins. It will hit farmers in Andhra Pradesh the hardest as they account for over 82% of India's total shrimp production, followed by those in states like Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. The impact is not limited to coastal areas. Under the Union government's Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, inland saline aquaculture is being promoted in inland states like Haryana and Punjab. These states are converting salinity-affected lands into productive aquaculture zones. Inland farmers, many of whom are new to shrimp farming, are now facing uncertainty just as they begin to expand operations. If farm-gate prices fall due to an export disruption, it could stall progress in these emerging aquaculture areas. What can be done in response: The Indian shrimp industry's hope is of lower tariffs through negotiations. But if high US tariff rates persist, India must treat this trade shock as a wake-up call to diversify export markets, increase production efficiency and boost domestic demand for shrimp. There is an urgent need to diversify India's shrimp export markets beyond the US, with a greater focus placed on East Asia, the EU, UK and West Asia. The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement offers a timely opportunity to boost shrimp exports to the UK by leveraging the pact's tariff advantages. India's Marine Products Export Development Authority can play a key role in branding Indian shrimp and facilitating market development abroad. Also read: Raising farmer income is a key priority for India Also, the farmers' access to institutional credit and insurance must be improved. Small farmers often struggle with working capital constraints and shrimp crop insurance schemes need to be scaled up with transparent and efficient claim-settlement mechanisms. Boosting domestic consumption is no less critical. Shrimp could be mainstreamed into Indian non-vegetarian diets through awareness campaigns of its nutritional value. Our growing market for ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook food is likely to welcome it. These are the authors' personal views.
