Siddaramaiah Orders Probe Into Hassan Heart Attack Deaths, Hints At Covid Vaccine Link
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah formed a committee led by Dr. Ravindranath to investigate the rise in heart attack deaths in Hassan, including possible COVID vaccine side effects.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that the state government is taking the surge in heart attack deaths in the state 'very seriously".
'The government has taken very seriously the matter of more than twenty people in Hassan district alone succumbing to heart attacks. To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find remedial measures, a committee of experts has been formed," the Karnataka Chief Minister said in a post on X.
He further added that the panel will be led by Dr. Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, who will submit the study report in 10 days.
The Chief Minister said the panel will look into reasons for sudden deaths and youth and also study side effects of the COVID vaccine if any. 'What are the reasons for the sudden deaths of young people and youth in the state? Could there be any side effects of the COVID vaccine? A comprehensive study was ordered to this same committee as early as February to investigate these questions. In this regard, the examination and analysis of heart patients are also in progress," he said.
Karnataka's Hassan district is grappling with an alarming surge in heart attack fatalities, with Monday's three deaths bringing the total to 21 in just 40 days. Particularly concerning is that a significant number of the deceased are young adults.
Those who died on Monday were Lepakshi, 50, from JP Nagar in Belur town, who collapsed suddenly after complaining of fatigue; Professor Muttayya, 58, an English professor in Holenarasipura, who suffered a fatal heart attack while having tea; and Kumar, 57, a D-Group employee in Channarayapattana, who succumbed to cardiac arrest after being hospitalised with chest pain on Sunday.
said: 'We wanted to find out exactly what's going on. We took an initial look at the situation, and since there were about 18 cases in one month – some of them younger individuals – we felt it was necessary to get a proper scientific analysis done".
He said the high number of deaths in one district alone, all reportedly due to heart attacks, was alarming. 'What makes this case particularly concerning is that all of them are from the same district – Hassan. We've asked the team of experts to go there, examine the causes of all the deaths and also check if similar cases are being reported in other districts. We have to see if the ratio is similar or if these cases from Hassan are unique," he further added.
' We are keeping a close watch on heart attack cases, especially among the 18-40 age group, which is why the numbers look high. It's not only happening here, but we are logging every heart-related issue or death and monitoring it closely," Hassan MP Shreyas Patel told News18.
BJP Claps Back
BJP leader R. Ashoka has strongly criticised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting that side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine may be among the factors behind a surge in heart attack deaths in the state's Hassan district. In a sharp response posted on X, Ashoka called the CM's remarks 'dangerous" and 'irresponsible," accusing the Congress government of deflecting blame instead of acting decisively.

'It is deeply unfortunate that even as over twenty lives have been lost to sudden heart attacks in just one district alone, the Congress government is more interested in deflecting blame than in taking responsibility," he said, referring to the ongoing deaths in Hassan, where 21 people have died of cardiac arrests in the past 40 days.
Ashoka, however, questioned the motive behind raising the vaccine angle, stating, 'The COVID vaccine was not a BJP vaccine; it was India's vaccine. Developed by our scientists, approved by regulators, and backed by data across countries." He added that the move to cast doubts on vaccination was 'both anti-science and anti-people."
The BJP also demanded transparency, asking the Congress government to publish real data on cardiac-related deaths, vaccine records, and rural health infrastructure. 'This is not leadership. This is cowardice," Ashoka said.

Covid vaccine safe for heart, says Health Ministry citing AIIMS, ICMR studies
New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) A day after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah linked heart-related deaths in Hassan district to Covid vaccine, the Union Health Ministry today rebut his claims saying that extensive studies by ICMR and AIIMS have conclusively found no such connections. Siddaramaiah had on Tuesday said "hasty approval and distribution" of the Covid vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths and urged everyone to visit the nearest health centre immediately for a check-up if they have symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, and not to ignore these signs. However, the Ministry trashed his observation, saying that the matter of sudden unexplained deaths has been investigated through several agencies in the country and these studies have conclusively established that there is no direct link between Covid-19 vaccination and reports of sudden deaths. The Ministry cited studies by the ICMR and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) saying that they have affirmed that Covid-19 vaccines in India are safe and effective, with extremely rare instances of serious side effects. Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-Covid complications, the Ministry said in a statement. The ICMR and NCDC have been working together to understand the causes behind sudden unexplained deaths, especially in young adults between the ages of 18 and 45 years. To explore this, two complementary studies were undertaken using different research approaches -- one based on past data and another involving real-time investigation. The first study was conducted by ICMR's National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was titled "Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India - a multi-centric matched case control study," from May to August 2023 across 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union territories, the statement said. It looked at individuals who appeared to be healthy but died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023. The findings have conclusively showed that Covid-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden deaths in young adults. The second study titled "Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young" is currently being conducted by the AIIMS, Delhi. This is a prospective study aimed at determining the common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. 'Early analysis of data from the study indicates that heart attacks or myocardial infarction (MI) continue to be the leading cause of sudden death in this age group,' the statement said. Importantly, no major changes in the pattern of causes have been observed when compared with previous years. In majority of the unexplained death cases, genetic mutations have been identified as a possible cause of these deaths. The final results will be shared once the study is complete. Together, these two studies offer a more comprehensive understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults in India. It has also been found that Covid-19 vaccination does not appear to increase the risk, whereas, the role of underlying health issues, genetic predisposition and risky lifestyle choices does play a role in unexplained sudden deaths, the statement said. Without naming the State and Karnataka Chief Minister's statement on doubting vaccine's efficiency, the statement said 'Scientific experts have reiterated that statements linking COVID vaccination to sudden deaths are false and misleading, and are not supported by scientific consensus. 'Speculative claims without conclusive evidence risk undermining public confidence in vaccines, which have played a crucial role in saving millions of lives during the pandemic. Such unfounded reports and claims could strongly contribute to vaccine hesitancy in the country, thereby adversely impacting public health.' The Karnataka chief minister had said more than 20 people have died due to heart attacks in the past month alone in just one district of Hassan. In a post on X, he wrote: "The government is taking this matter very seriously. To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find solutions, a committee of experts has been formed under the leadership of Dr Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and they have been instructed to submit a study report within 10 days.' Hry aiming to raise MBBS seats to over 3.4k by '29: CM
Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday said the state govt was consistently working to provide better resources to the doctors and quality healthcare services to the citizens. He mentioned that medical colleges were being established in every district. While there were only six medical colleges in 2014, the number has now increased to 15, and nine new colleges are under construction. As a result, MBBS seats in the state increased from 700 in 2014 to 2,185, at present. The state govt aims to increase the MBBS seats to over 3,400 by 2029, said Saini. The CM was addressing a gathering as the chief guest at an event organised on National Doctors' Day by the Derabassi Medical Association in Chandigarh. He appreciated the significant contribution of the Derabassi Medical Association in the field of human service, mentioning that a free dialysis centre has been operational at Chaurasia Hospital for the last two years. Extending greetings and best wishes to all doctors, healthcare workers, and those associated with the medical field on National Doctors' Day, Saini said they were the "true servants of humanity". Their spirit of service, dedication, and sensitivity plays a vital role in building a healthy, safe, and empowered society, he added. The CM emphasised that the govt's objective was to ensure that every doctor had access to adequate resources and every citizen received proper treatment. He said, to strengthen the medical infrastructure, the number of postgraduate seats was increased from 289 to 1,043. In addition, there are 155 seats for PG diplomas, he said. To address the shortage of medics, the govt recruited 3,798 doctors since 2014. The retirement age for doctors was also raised from 58 to 65, said Saini. He also elaborated upon the upgrade of healthcare facilities in govt-run hospitals of the state as well as the facilities for the poor and elderly seeking free treatment in private hospitals. The CM said this year's theme for Doctors' Day was "Caring for the caregivers behind the mask". This theme inspires us to appreciate doctors not only for their professional services, but also for their contribution to human welfare. It calls for understanding and fulfilling their needs, he said. He recalled that during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the entire country was indoors, doctors stood by patients wearing the PPE kits while staying away from their families. The CM also felicitated various doctors for their contribution to public service. He also released a magazine of the Derabassi Medical Association.

ICMR rules out Covid-19 link in young heart attack deaths, says lifestyle, previous conditions are triggers
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have conclusively established that there is no direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and the reports of sudden deaths of young people in the country. The report assumes significance in the light of concerns over 18 heart attack cases in Karnataka's Hassan district within a one-month period, particularly among the young. The ICMR-NCDC studies affirm that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective with extremely rare instances of serious side effects. They say that COVID-19 vaccination does not appear to increase the risk and that the sudden cardiac deaths could have resulted from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and pre-existing conditions. Don't overlook lifestyle triggers, especially smoking Dr Ranjan Shetty, lead cardiologist and medical director at Sparsh Hospitals, Bengaluru, says that of all the risk factors, smoking and high blood pressure because of work stress are mostly responsible. 'Family history, cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, and alcohol are other triggers. Cigarette-smoking harms the entire cardiovascular system as it changes blood chemistry, thickens blood vessels. This causes the heart to race and the blood pressure to rise, accelerates blood clot and plaque formation. There is no benefit from cutting down cigarettes, you just have to give it up,' he says. He also warns that second-hand smoke poses the same risk to a non-smoker as it does to a smoker. The other big factors, he says, are poor sleep and high blood pressure. 'The body doesn't rest, the stress hormones are active, there is inflammation and high blood pressure. This in turn damages blood vessel walls, allowing for tears that dislodge unstable or even smaller plaques and encourage blood clots to form over them. To make matters worse, young people then subject their weakened arteries to gym workouts without proper sleep. That's why we are hearing of young heart attacks more,' says Dr Shetty. What were the studies about? The ICMR and NCDC have been working together to understand the causes behind sudden unexplained deaths, especially in young adults between the ages of 18 and 45 years. To explore this, two complementary studies were undertaken using different research approaches—one based on past data and another involving real-time investigation. The first study, conducted by ICMR's National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), was carried out from May to August 2023 across 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union Territories. It looked at individuals who appeared to be healthy but died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023. The findings have conclusively shown that COVID-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death in young adults. The second study, titled 'Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young,' is currently being conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi in collaboration with ICMR. This is aimed at determining the common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. 'Speculative claims without conclusive evidence risk undermining public confidence in vaccines, which have played a crucial role in saving millions of lives during the pandemic. Such unfounded reports and claims could strongly contribute to vaccine hesitancy in the country, thereby adversely impacting public health,' says the ICMR statement. So when should one do preventive tests? Dr Shetty says every young person with a family history should get tested in their early 20s and the rest definitely between 25 and 30. Apart from lipid profile and blood work, a calcium scoring test can map plaques while the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a blood component indicator of inflammation, can tell you if you are more prone to heart attacks. Then there is the treadmill test or TMT to map heart stress. Every diabetic should take a ten-year risk score.
