Siddaramaiah Orders Probe Into Hassan Heart Attack Deaths, Hints At Covid Vaccine Link
Last Updated: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah formed a committee led by Dr. Ravindranath to investigate the rise in heart attack deaths in Hassan, including possible COVID vaccine side effects. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that the state government is taking the surge in heart attack deaths in the state 'very seriously". 'The government has taken very seriously the matter of more than twenty people in Hassan district alone succumbing to heart attacks. To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find remedial measures, a committee of experts has been formed," the Karnataka Chief Minister said in a post on X. He further added that the panel will be led by Dr. Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, who will submit the study report in 10 days. The Chief Minister said the panel will look into reasons for sudden deaths and youth and also study side effects of the COVID vaccine if any. 'What are the reasons for the sudden deaths of young people and youth in the state? Could there be any side effects of the COVID vaccine? A comprehensive study was ordered to this same committee as early as February to investigate these questions. In this regard, the examination and analysis of heart patients are also in progress," he said. Karnataka's Hassan district is grappling with an alarming surge in heart attack fatalities, with Monday's three deaths bringing the total to 21 in just 40 days. Particularly concerning is that a significant number of the deceased are young adults. Those who died on Monday were Lepakshi, 50, from JP Nagar in Belur town, who collapsed suddenly after complaining of fatigue; Professor Muttayya, 58, an English professor in Holenarasipura, who suffered a fatal heart attack while having tea; and Kumar, 57, a D-Group employee in Channarayapattana, who succumbed to cardiac arrest after being hospitalised with chest pain on Sunday. said: 'We wanted to find out exactly what's going on. We took an initial look at the situation, and since there were about 18 cases in one month – some of them younger individuals – we felt it was necessary to get a proper scientific analysis done". He said the high number of deaths in one district alone, all reportedly due to heart attacks, was alarming. 'What makes this case particularly concerning is that all of them are from the same district – Hassan. We've asked the team of experts to go there, examine the causes of all the deaths and also check if similar cases are being reported in other districts. We have to see if the ratio is similar or if these cases from Hassan are unique," he further added. ' We are keeping a close watch on heart attack cases, especially among the 18-40 age group, which is why the numbers look high. It's not only happening here, but we are logging every heart-related issue or death and monitoring it closely," Hassan MP Shreyas Patel told News18. BJP Claps Back BJP leader R. Ashoka has strongly criticised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting that side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine may be among the factors behind a surge in heart attack deaths in the state's Hassan district. In a sharp response posted on X, Ashoka called the CM's remarks 'dangerous" and 'irresponsible," accusing the Congress government of deflecting blame instead of acting decisively. — R. Ashoka (@RAshokaBJP) July 1, 2025 'It is deeply unfortunate that even as over twenty lives have been lost to sudden heart attacks in just one district alone, the Congress government is more interested in deflecting blame than in taking responsibility," he said, referring to the ongoing deaths in Hassan, where 21 people have died of cardiac arrests in the past 40 days. Ashoka, however, questioned the motive behind raising the vaccine angle, stating, 'The COVID vaccine was not a BJP vaccine; it was India's vaccine. Developed by our scientists, approved by regulators, and backed by data across countries." He added that the move to cast doubts on vaccination was 'both anti-science and anti-people." The BJP also demanded transparency, asking the Congress government to publish real data on cardiac-related deaths, vaccine records, and rural health infrastructure. 'This is not leadership. This is cowardice," Ashoka said. tags : BJP heart-attack karnataka Location : Bengaluru, India, India First Published: July 01, 2025, 17:47 IST News bengaluru-news Siddaramaiah Orders Probe Into Hassan Heart Attack Deaths, Hints At Covid Vaccine Link

Sudden Spike In Heart Attack Cases, Karnataka Sets Up Committee To Probe Deaths
Karnataka's Hassan district is in the grip of a worrying surge in heart attack-related deaths, with four more lives lost on June 30, taking the number of deaths to 22 in just 40 days. What's particularly alarming is that a majority of the victims were young or middle-aged, raising serious concerns about an emerging health crisis in the region. Among the 22 deaths, five were between 19 and 25 years old, eight were aged between 25 and 45, and only a few were above 60. This disproportionate impact on the younger population has left both the medical community and the public rattled. The victims on June 30 include Lepakshi, a 50-year-old homemaker from JP Nagar in Belur, who collapsed after complaining of fatigue. Professor Muttayya, 58, an English lecturer at the Government First Grade College in Holenarasipura, died of a sudden heart attack while having tea. Kumar, 57, a D-Group employee from Channarayapattana, died after being hospitalised with chest pain the previous day. Satyanarayana Rao, 63, from Rangolihalli colony, also succumbed after a sudden collapse. The spike has led to a noticeable increase in patients at cardiac facilities, especially Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru. Doctors have reported an estimated 8 per cent rise in outpatient visits over the last two weeks, with a significant number of patients arriving from Hassan and neighboring districts. Many are coming in for precautionary check-ups, driven by fear and uncertainty. Data from the District Health and Family Welfare Department shows that Hassan has recorded 507 heart attack cases in the last two years, of which 190 were fatal. While heart conditions have long been a concern in the region, the sudden rise in younger victims is a new and disturbing trend. Earlier deaths include a series of tragic cases involving students and working professionals. On May 20, Abhishek from Arakalagudu and 20-year-old student Sandhya from Hole Narasipura both died. On May 28, the same Sandhya's case reappears, along with 19-year-old Abhishek again, indicating repeated mentions in records. Other victims include Kavana (20) from Kelavatti, Nagappa (55) from Magge, Neelakanthappa (58) from Hassan, and Devaraj (43) from Dummagere. Younger victims such as Naveen Kumar (31) from Arsikere, Chetan (38) from Rangolihalli, and Yogesh M. (30) from Honnenahalli stand out in the long list of fatalities. In response to rising concerns over sudden deaths, especially among the youth, the Karnataka Health Department has formed an expert committee to investigate possible links to COVID or vaccine-related complications. Chaired by the Director of Jayadeva Institute, the panel includes experts from NIMHANS, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, St. John's, BMCRI, Manipal Hospitals, and ICMR-NCDIR. The committee will study cases involving sudden cardiac arrests, strokes, and neurological issues, and submit recommendations to help prevent such deaths. The decision follows directions from the Chief Minister and Health Minister amid growing media attention and public anxiety.

21 Heart Attack Deaths In Karnataka's Hassan District In 40 Days: Government Orders Probe
Last Updated: Of the 21 fatalities in Karnataka's Hassan district, five were in the 19-25 age group and eight in 25-45 age group. Four were between 45 and 58 years, while 4 were senior citizens Karnataka's Hassan district is grappling with an alarming surge in heart attack fatalities, with Monday's three more deaths bringing the total to 21 in just 40 days. Particularly concerning is that a significant number of deceased are young adults. Five Aged 19-25, Eight Aged 25-45 Of the 21 fatalities, five were in the 19-25 age group and eight in the 25-45 age group. The fact that a majority of the deceased were below the age of 45 has left residents deeply shocked and concerned. This pattern is reflected in the District Health and Family Welfare Department's statistics, which show 190 fatal heart attack cases out of 507 reported in Hassan over the past two years. Jayadeva Hospital Overwhelmed The alarming increase in heart attack cases has led to a significant surge in patients seeking cardiac check-ups at Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru. The Outpatient Departments (OPDs) are currently overflowing, with an estimated 8% increase in patient visits since the recent spike in cases. This influx underscores the growing public anxiety and the urgent need for comprehensive cardiac care in the region. Initial findings from the department over the 18 heart attack deaths revealed that nine of the deceased were over 55 with co-morbidities, and five were in their 20s (four of whom died in Bengaluru but were originally from Hassan). Factors like Type-1 diabetes and chronic diseases were present in some cases. Sixteen of the initial 18 reported deaths occurred at home, necessitating a thorough review of past medical records. Gupta said, 'Experts at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences are saying that apart from other health reasons, there could be genetic reasons that affect heart muscle in the population. Whether it's genetic reasons or other uncontrolled health issue etc., in these nine cases we have sought a report." The committee, initially established in February to investigate potential links between Covid-19 and heart-related incidents, has now been specifically instructed to review all Hassan medical reports and submit its comprehensive findings within 10 days.
