Sleeping in complete darkness: How it helps prevent Cancer growth

We all know how sleep plays a crucial role in our health. While our physical bodies rest, our brain during that time, performs some key activities like waste removal, memory consolidation, cell repair, energy restoration and many more. While everyone has their own consensus on how they want to sleep, doctors believe that sleeping in pitch darkness (With a source of light close by to switch on to avoid accidents) is extremely beneficial for health. The trick to test it? If you can see your palm in the dark, your room is still too bright. This apart, the dark can positively affect your body's natural processes, including how your cells grow and repair. However, that is not all. Do you know that sleeping in complete darkness also prevents Cancer growth? Here's how... Why dark matters Our bodies follow a natural 24-hour cycle called the circadian rhythm. This internal clock controls many functions, such as when we feel awake or sleepy, hormone release, and cell repair. Light is the main signal that tells our brain when it's time to be awake or asleep. When you sleep in a room with lights, on or even small amounts of light (even from outside), it can confuse your brain. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo This disrupts your circadian rhythm and affects the production of important hormones like melatonin. The importance of Melatonin Melatonin is often called the 'sleep hormone' because it helps regulate sleep-wake cycles. It is produced by the pineal gland in the brain, mainly during the night when it is dark. Melatonin not only helps you fall asleep, but also has powerful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals can cause mutations in your DNA, which may lead to cancer. Melatonin helps neutralize these free radicals and supports your immune system in fighting abnormal cell growth. How the dark reduces Cancer Risk Exposure to light during sleep lowers melatonin production. Studies have found that people who are exposed to light at night, such as shift workers or those who sleep with lights on, have lower melatonin levels. This reduction can weaken the body's natural defense against cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified shift work involving circadian disruption as a probable carcinogen. This means that disrupting your natural sleep cycle by being awake at night or sleeping with light can increase the risk of developing certain cancers, especially breast and prostate cancer. What does science say Several research studies support the idea that sleeping in complete darkness may help prevent cancer growth: A 2014 study published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control showed that women who slept in rooms with light exposure had a higher risk of breast cancer compared to those who slept in complete darkness. Research from the University of Texas found that melatonin can slow the growth of cancer cells in laboratory experiments, especially breast and colon cancer cells. Another study in Chronobiology International found that people with lower nighttime melatonin levels were more likely to develop cancer over time. Tips for sleeping in darkness To improve your sleep environment and help your body produce melatonin naturally, try the following: Use blackout curtains: These block outside street lights or sunlight from entering your room. Remove electronic devices: Turn off or cover screens from phones, computers, and TVs, as they emit blue light that suppresses melatonin. Use a sleep mask: If blackout curtains are not an option, a comfortable eye mask can help block light. Avoid night lights: Even small night lights can reduce melatonin production. Keep your bedroom dark during naps: If you nap during the day, try to rest in a dark room to maintain your circadian rhythm. Other Benefits of Sleeping in Darkness Besides cancer prevention, sleeping in complete darkness has many other health benefits: Better sleep quality: Darkness helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Improved mood: Proper sleep reduces stress and lowers the risk of depression. Stronger immune system: Good sleep supports your body's ability to fight infections. Balanced hormones: Darkness helps regulate hormones related to appetite, growth, and stress. 20 people die of heart attack in Karnataka's Hassan in one month; CM Siddaramaiah points to possible Covid vaccine link

Karnataka: Following the alarming heart attack related deaths in Karnataka's Hassan, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday stated that it 'cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths'. The Karnataka CM said that the state government had taken a 'serious note' of the situation and announced a committee of experts led by Dr C N Ravindranath to probe the cause of the deaths. The panel has been instructed to submit its findings within 10 days. Karnataka's Hassan district has been gripped by heart attack-related deaths where 23 deaths have been reported in the last 40 days, including four on June 30 alone. Majority of the victims were aged between 19-45 years. The Karnataka CM made the announcement in a post on X. Siddaramaiah added that the same committee was previously tasked with examining whether sudden deaths among young individuals across Karnataka could be linked to Covid-19 vaccines or other underlying health factors. Taking a swipe at the BJP, Siddaramaiah said: 'It cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths, as several studies worldwide have recently indicated that COVID vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks. Before BJP criticize us on this matter, they should ask their conscience.' Yesterday, the Karnataka district recorded four deaths due to heart attacks. According to a report by India Today, the four victims included: 50-year-old woman who collapsed after feeling fatigued, a 58-year-old college lecturer who died while having tea, a 57-year-old D-group employee who passed away after he was hospitalised for chest pain, and a 63-year-old man who collapsed after chest discomfort. The sharp spike in heart attack cases has resulted in an 8 per cent surge in patient footfall at Bengaluru's Jayadeva Hospital over the past two weeks, mentioned a report by India Today. The patients at the hospital are majorly from Hassan and surrounding districts. Doctors say many are coming in for precautionary check-ups amid growing concerns, added the report. As per the District Health and Family Welfare Department, Hassan has reported 507 heart attack cases and 190 deaths in the past two years. However, the recent spike in fatalities among younger individuals has raised serious concern among health officials.

Siddaramaiah Orders Probe Into Hassan Heart Attack Deaths, Hints At Covid Vaccine Link

Last Updated: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah formed a committee led by Dr. Ravindranath to investigate the rise in heart attack deaths in Hassan, including possible COVID vaccine side effects. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that the state government is taking the surge in heart attack deaths in the state 'very seriously". 'The government has taken very seriously the matter of more than twenty people in Hassan district alone succumbing to heart attacks. To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find remedial measures, a committee of experts has been formed," the Karnataka Chief Minister said in a post on X. He further added that the panel will be led by Dr. Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, who will submit the study report in 10 days. The Chief Minister said the panel will look into reasons for sudden deaths and youth and also study side effects of the COVID vaccine if any. 'What are the reasons for the sudden deaths of young people and youth in the state? Could there be any side effects of the COVID vaccine? A comprehensive study was ordered to this same committee as early as February to investigate these questions. In this regard, the examination and analysis of heart patients are also in progress," he said. Karnataka's Hassan district is grappling with an alarming surge in heart attack fatalities, with Monday's three deaths bringing the total to 21 in just 40 days. Particularly concerning is that a significant number of the deceased are young adults. Those who died on Monday were Lepakshi, 50, from JP Nagar in Belur town, who collapsed suddenly after complaining of fatigue; Professor Muttayya, 58, an English professor in Holenarasipura, who suffered a fatal heart attack while having tea; and Kumar, 57, a D-Group employee in Channarayapattana, who succumbed to cardiac arrest after being hospitalised with chest pain on Sunday. said: 'We wanted to find out exactly what's going on. We took an initial look at the situation, and since there were about 18 cases in one month – some of them younger individuals – we felt it was necessary to get a proper scientific analysis done". He said the high number of deaths in one district alone, all reportedly due to heart attacks, was alarming. 'What makes this case particularly concerning is that all of them are from the same district – Hassan. We've asked the team of experts to go there, examine the causes of all the deaths and also check if similar cases are being reported in other districts. We have to see if the ratio is similar or if these cases from Hassan are unique," he further added. ' We are keeping a close watch on heart attack cases, especially among the 18-40 age group, which is why the numbers look high. It's not only happening here, but we are logging every heart-related issue or death and monitoring it closely," Hassan MP Shreyas Patel told News18. BJP Claps Back BJP leader R. Ashoka has strongly criticised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting that side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine may be among the factors behind a surge in heart attack deaths in the state's Hassan district. In a sharp response posted on X, Ashoka called the CM's remarks 'dangerous" and 'irresponsible," accusing the Congress government of deflecting blame instead of acting decisively. — R. Ashoka (@RAshokaBJP) July 1, 2025 'It is deeply unfortunate that even as over twenty lives have been lost to sudden heart attacks in just one district alone, the Congress government is more interested in deflecting blame than in taking responsibility," he said, referring to the ongoing deaths in Hassan, where 21 people have died of cardiac arrests in the past 40 days. Ashoka, however, questioned the motive behind raising the vaccine angle, stating, 'The COVID vaccine was not a BJP vaccine; it was India's vaccine. Developed by our scientists, approved by regulators, and backed by data across countries." He added that the move to cast doubts on vaccination was 'both anti-science and anti-people." The BJP also demanded transparency, asking the Congress government to publish real data on cardiac-related deaths, vaccine records, and rural health infrastructure. 'This is not leadership. This is cowardice," Ashoka said. tags : BJP heart-attack karnataka Location : Bengaluru, India, India First Published: July 01, 2025, 17:47 IST News bengaluru-news Siddaramaiah Orders Probe Into Hassan Heart Attack Deaths, Hints At Covid Vaccine Link
