Naveen congratulates IMD DG for receiving UN award
Bhubaneswar: Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, on Monday congratulated Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), for receiving the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Taking to X, Patnaik, a five-time former chief minister, said, 'Congratulate #Odisha's Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology of @Indiametdept on being conferred with United Nations Sasakawa Award 2025 for Disaster Risk Reduction. He has been awarded for his pioneering work in reducing cyclone-related fatalities across the Indian Ocean region. #Odisha is proud of your achievement.'
Mohapatra, who hails from Bhadrak district and is popularly known as the 'Cyclone Man of India,' was recognised for his outstanding contributions to tropical cyclone forecasting and early warning systems. He has been serving as the IMD Director General since 2019. He is also one of the three vice-presidents of the World Meteorological Organisation, the UN agency for climate change, weather and water.
The award was presented during the eighth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Geneva recently.
In a message, Mohapatra said, 'Received United Nations Sasakawa Award, 2025 for disaster risk reduction. I am really grateful.'
Earlier this year, Mohapatra received the Scientific and Technological Activities Commission Outstanding Service Award 2025 from the American Meteorological Society in recognition of his transformative work in enhancing tropical cyclone prediction and warning systems.

Odisha CM vows strict action against illegal Bangladeshi settlers in state
KENDRAPARA: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday directed the district administration to take strict legal action against Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Kendrapara. Attending a review meeting at Kendrapara during his maiden visit to the coastal district, the CM said the local police need to work in coordination with Central agencies to deal with the issue of illegal immigration. 'All illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and other countries will not be spared. We will identify and take action against all immigrants staying in the state illegally without valid documents. The move is necessary for national security,' he said. Incidentally in March this year, the CM had informed the Odisha Assembly that a total of 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators were identified in the state. The highest number of 1,649 illegal Bangladeshi settlers were in Kendrapara followed by 1,112 in neighbouring Jagatsinghpur.

Delhi on IMD's orange alert for heatwave as Bengaluru, Mumbai brace for more rain; check weather forecast here
Weather today: An orange warning is in place in the national capital, Delhi, for 10 June as heatwaves take a toll on the lives of residents of North Indian states. In the financial capital Mumbai, although no weather alert is in place, the regional weather forecasting agency predicts a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The Southwest monsoon is bringing fresh spells of rain to southern states. Bengaluru, the IT hub of India, is on yellow alert as weather predictions indicate a likelihood of heavy rain with a generally cloudy sky. Delhi residents can brace for another hot day amidst an orange alert for a heatwave. The weather conditions will most likely improve after 12 June. Amid IMD's orange alert, the maximum temperature is expected to reach as high as 45 degrees Celsius, around 3-5 notches above normal during this time. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 28-30 degrees Celsius, and the skies are expected to be clear. The maximum and minimum temperature in the city is expected to settle around 33 and 27 degrees Celsius. Over the next five days the minimum temperature is expected to drop two notches while wet spells will continue in the region. IMD's weather report dated 9 June stated, "Light/moderate rainfall at some/isolated places accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph are likely over Marathawada until 15 June. In Madhya Maharashtra, similar conditions are expected to prevail until 14 June. Thunderstorms are likely at isolated places in Marathawada on 13 and 14 June. Bengaluru's India Meteorological Centre in its weather forecast for coastal Karnataka stated, 'Heavy rain/Thundershowers with gusty wind (30-40 kmph) likely to occur at one or two places over Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts.' The maximum and minimum temperature is expected to hover around 30 and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Maximum Temperature In Delhi Likely To Touch 44 Degrees Celsius Today
New Delhi: Delhi woke up to a warm Tuesday morning, with the weather department predicting heatwave conditions for the day. The minimum temperature settled at 27.8 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees below the season's average, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The maximum temperature is expected to soar to around 44 degrees Celsius, with dust-raising winds likely to sweep the city. The relative humidity stood at 39 per cent at 8:30 am. Delhi's air quality was recorded in the poor category at 9 am, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 218, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
