Smriti's historic ton, Charani's fiery debut spell guides India to 97-run win over England in 1st T20I

Nottingham: A historic century by stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana and a fiery spell from debutant spinner Shree Charani guided India to a dominant 97-run win over England in the first T20I at Nottingham on Saturday.
With this win, India has a series lead of 1-0 in the five-match affair. The second T20I will be played at Bristol at July 1.
England won the toss and opted to bowl first. A 77-run opening stand between Mandhana and Shafali Varma (20 in 22 balls, with three fours) kicked things off for India as India made 47 of them during the six-over powerplay.
A 94-run stand followed for the second wicket between Mandhana and Harleen Deol (43 in 23 balls, with seven fours), with India reaching the 100-run mark in 10.1 overs. Tremendous ball-striking was on display from the duo.
India touched 200-run mark in 19.1 overs and they managed to reach 210/5 in 20 overs, with Lauren Bell (3/27) delivering some late strikes, removing Harleen, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh (12) and Jemimah Rodrigues (0) unbeaten.
India utilised their middle overs phase well (overs 7 to 16), hitting 124 runs scored by India in the middle overs (7-16), the most ever scored by them in this phase of the game.
Mandhana smashed a brutal 112 in 62 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes, with a strike rate of over 180, becoming India's first-ever all-format centurion in women's cricket and only second after Harmanpreet Kaur to score a T20I century. This is also the highest score by an Indian women's cricketer in T20Is. 78 of her runs came through boundaries, the most by an Indian in women's T20I innings, as per ESPNCricinfo.
Overall, across the world, only five players have achieved this massive accomplishment of being an all-format centurion in women's cricket, with England's Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt and Australia's Beth Mooney being others besides Mandhana.
This is India's second-best total in T20Is, bettered only by 217/4 against West Indies. This is also their highest total away from home in the shortest format of the game.
Em Arlott (1/38) and Sophie Ecclestone (1/43) were also among the wickets.
During the run chase, England lost their openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt for single digits, reduced to 9/2. But a partnership of 49 runs between skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt (66 in 42 balls, with 10 fours) and Tammy Beaumont (10) stabilised the innings until England lost Tammy on the last ball of the powerplay, which ended at a score of 58/3.
From there, it was downhill for England as spinners Charani (4/12) and Radha Yadav (2/15) triggered a batting collapse, shutting down England for just 113 runs in 14.5 overs. This is England's biggest loss in terms of runs in women's T20Is.
Charani made it to the history books, becoming the second Indian bowler to bag a four-fer on Women's T20I debut, after Sravanthi Naidu's 4/9 vs BAN-W at Cox's Bazar in 2014.
Deepti Sharma (2/32) was also impressive with the ball, while Amanjot Kaur and Arundhati Reddy managed a wicket each.

Wimbledon: Sinner, Djokovic in same half of draw, Alcaraz to start against Fognini

London: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will kickstart his Wimbledon campaign against 38-year-old Fabio Fognini in round one, while the world number one Jannik Sinner will play his first-round game against compatriot Luca Nardi. The tournament will start on Monday, and the draw for the tournament took place on Friday. Sinner's pursuit of his first Wimbledon title could depend on a semifinal clash against Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion in London. The number one player, Sinner, competes against Nardi, while Djokovic, competing at sixth-seeding, his lowest since 2018, will kickstart his tournament for a record-tying eighth Wimbledon title against Frenchman Alexandre Muller, as per ATP's official website. Djokovic, who prevailed over Sinner in the quarterfinal of the 2022 Wimbledon and the 2023 semifinal, is seeded for a quarterfinal match with British number one Jack Draper. Draper will kickstart against Sebastian Baez and could face an in-form Halle champion, Alexander Bublik, in round three. In the bottom half of the draw, Alcaraz, who is on his career-best 18-match win streak, will start against Fognini and could meet eighth seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinals, and if he wins, his semifinal opponents could be Oliver Tarvet or Leandro Riedi, both of them Grand Slam main draw debutants. The world number three and three-time major finalist Alexander Zverev, whose campaign will start against Arthur Rinderknech, is seeded for a quarterfinal clash against Taylor Fritz, who faces Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his opener and maintains an 8-5 lead over Zverev head-to-head. Archer to feature for England at Edgbaston? Rob Key teases return of "world-class" speedster against India

London: ECB managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, dropped a subtle hint about tearaway Jofra Archer's return in the forthcoming second Test against India in Birmingham, which is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday. Archer returned to England's Test fold for the first time since February 2021 after being named in the 14-player squad for the contest at Edgbaston. His inclusion comes in the aftermath of his return to first-class action in the County Championship on Sunday for the first time in more than four years. The 30-year-old, known to test the speed gun with his scorching pace, scalped a solitary wicket and struck 31 runs with the bat in 34 deliveries for Durham against Sussex in the County Championship. Archer's last appearance dates back to England's 10-wicket defeat by India in Ahmedabad in February 2021, following which numerous injuries plagued him and kept the promising speedster out of the format. While Archer's inclusion has left former cricketers and fans with split opinions, Key hinted at the prospect of the right-arm seamer charging at the Indian batters with his blistering pace at Edgbaston. "I would imagine [that he will play at least one of the next two Tests]. As I stand here now, that's where it's heading, but who knows? He could bowl the first ball of the [Edgbaston] Test. All options are available. The amount of work Jofra has put in over the last six months almost... There is a point where your [bowling] loads are there because of the building up you've been doing," Key said as quoted from Sky Sports. "We have to be careful with all of our bowlers but if you didn't want bowlers to get injured you would never play them. That's not what it's about. It's about getting your bowlers out there as much as possible so they can impact games of cricket," he added. If Archer fails to make the cut for the final XI, Archer could appear in the final stages of Sussex's next Championship fixture at home to Warwickshire, which will take place from Sunday to Wednesday at Hove. In 13 Test appearances, Archer has scythed 42 wickets at 31.04. "There is a chance he could play in the Championship if we think that is the best thing or it might be that if he doesn't play at Edgbaston having him around is the best thing," he said. While Archer's return to County didn't glisten with magical numbers, Key feels the 30-year-old managed to achieve his potential and added, "It was a question of could he hit his straps and could he get up to a decent pace, which we felt he did. Jofra is such a talent and was straight on the money. You need a lot of different things to be a world-class bowler, and he has all of them - pace, release point, skill, accuracy." England are currently leading 1-0 in the series after gunning down a record 371-run chase at Headingly, fuelled by Ben Duckett's flamboyant 149, Joe Root's composed 54* and Jamie Smith's (44*) finishing touches. England Men's Test squad for 2nd Test: Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
