Episode 3 of Twisted Metal season 2 begins with a look at Mr. Grimm, who appears to be a soul-stealer, digging up corpses and ingesting their essence, courtesy of an ethereal blue glow. However, later on we see that this glow is only really seen by Grimm himself, and not by those around him, throwing into question just how mystical he actually is.
Anyway, Grimm digs up his old motorcycle, thanks his pa, and rides off into the night.
We're two days out from the tournament, and en-route to Diesel City, Quiet and John Doe catch up. It doesn't last for long, as Quiet wants a personal Michelle Branch karaoke sesh, and tricks John into riding with Dollface instead.
However, Quiet's plan is interrupted when she realizes Mayhem is stowing away in the trunk of her car.
She's the girl who tried to intrude on the Dolls last episode, and apparently she's the best driver and wants to be part of the tournament. Of course, this is all one big bluff, as Mayhem can't even drive, let alone compete. Quiet takes pity on the girl after her hilarious attempt to 'ride away', and eventually teaches her how to drive.
While these two share some amusing banter, elsewhere John and Dollface improve their sibling bond by taking a trip down memory lane. They head to the Millennium Drive In, which they actually attended as kids back in the day.
Dollface wants to try and trigger some of his old memories, but unfortunately, they trigger an ambush, as Axel (a human-car hybrid complete with two giant wheels either side of him) rocks up and hunts them down.
John and Dollface soon bump into its creator, Dr Zemo, who brags about his plans to fuse human with car. He makes a point of explaining that this isn't racially motivated, before they kill the guy. In doing so, this allows Axel to go free, who rides off into the sunset.
Speaking of hunting, Mr Grimm tracks down Ashley and Jeremy, who are currently getting freaky on the road. Both are killed, with the latter murdered right in front of Ashley and Quiet as he flees down the street. Ashley and Quiet drive off quickly, singing together to combat their nerves, leaving Axel and Mr Grimm to fight each other.
The group are eventually reunited though, as they pay their respects to Jeremy and Ashley. They do so right on the crest of a hill, overlooking Diesel City where they intend to get their superweapon!
The Episode Review
So Twisted Metal rounds out the trio of episodes released today with an action-packed and well written chapter, one that helps cement the stakes and bond our quartet together.
Sweet Tooth is noticeably absent though, so we don't get much bloody action across these three chapters, but instead we get more context around Mr Grimm whose backstory has a decent amount of attention given to it.
It's still unclear right now whether there's actually supernatural powers surrounding Grimm or whether this is all inside his head, but one thing's for sure – he's not messing about.
The comedy is on-point here too, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the chapters ahead. Roll on next weeks episode!
