Erik ten Hag appeals for 'four to five new players' in order to rebuild Bayer Leverkusen

Yahoo3 days ago
Newly appointed Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag has clearly stated that he cannot make do with a 24-man-squad heading into the new Bundesliga campaign. The summer wave of departures from Germany's red company team leaves Leverkusen ill-equipped to finish in the top-four. Some forthcoming transfers can slash ten Hag's personnel pool further.
Lukas Hradecky's soon-to-be-finalized move to Monaco and the possibility that attacker Amine Adli might depart could leave ten Hag with just 22 professionals to build matchday squads. Leverkusen cannot hope to contest league, cup, and Champions League competitions with so few players. Knowing full well that his rebuilding project won't be easy, ten Hag at least let it be known what he needed from club management.
'One can't prevent players from leaving in top-level-football,' ten Hag – quoted by Kicker – noted after a Saturday friendly at Leverkusen's training camp in Rio de Janeiro. 'That's just the way it is. But it's best if four or five players don't leave in one transfer window, because then it becomes much more difficult to continue the process.
'All of us are facing a challenge,' ten Hag continued. 'The team. The coaching staff. Everyone involved, right up to the board. We will have to build a new era. We know that it will take time to build a completely new team. We will work on that. The initial contours are visible. We now have to build on them. There are still so many weaknesses.
'Four to five players still need to be added in order to achieve our goal of finishing in the top four,' ten Hag concluded. 'The transfer window is still open for another month and a lot can happen.'

United States USA's Tim Weah Joins Marseille After Two-Year Stint at Juventus Published Aug. 6, 2025 4:26 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link United States winger Tim Weah completed his move to Marseille on Wednesday after an inconsistent two-year stint at Juventus. The 25-year-old Weah's return to Ligue 1 will initially be on loan with an obligation to buy for a fee that could rise to 18 million euros ($21 million), according to French media reports. Weah's father, former FIFA Player of the Year George Weah, played one season at Marseille — 25 years ago near the end of his playing career. Marseille qualified for the Champions League by finishing as runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain last season. Neither Marseille nor Juventus disclosed financial details of Weah's move. In 78 total appearances for the Bianconeri, Weah scored seven goals, six of which came last season. He spent four seasons at Lille, which won the Ligue 1 title in 2021, before switching to Juventus in 2023. Thomas Müller ends 17-year Bayern stint with MLS move

Legendary Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Müller has put an end to a lucrative 17-year senior career at Allianz Arena, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps. The German made his debut for the club in 2008 and has since racked up a staggering tally of 250 goals and 276 assists in over 700 games with the Bundesliga giants. In the nearly two decades with Bayern, the 35-year-old won 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues, six German Cups, and eight German Supercups. Müller joins a Vancouver side in need of stardust after their red-hot start to the 2025 MLS campaign cooled off significantly in the early months of summer. Speaking after the signing was announced, Whitecaps FC CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said, "Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate Raumdeuter; interpreter of space – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement. "He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team. Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. "This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership – a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver." 📸 Alexander Hassenstein - 2022 Getty Images

'Day by day' - Bayer Leverkusen boss Erik Ten Hag issues injury update on USMNT midfielder Malik Tillman after preseason knock

Tillman suffers preseason knock Forward won't be fit for final friendly vs. Chelsea on Friday Ten Hag claims injury will be evaluated "day by day" Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? U.S. international Malik Tillman sustained a knock with Bayer Leverkusen and has been ruled out for their preseason finale against Chelsea FC on Friday, manager Erik Ten Hag confirmed on Wednesday. The injury has been labeled as a "minor strain from training" and it's held the 23-year-old Tillman back from making his debut for the Bundesliga side after securing a reported €35 million transfer from PSV this summer. "I can't say [when Tillman will be back]. We'll have to wait and see if it works out day by day," Ten Hag told Bild ahead of their match against the Blues in their preseason finale later this week. "I'm sure he won't be able to be there on Friday." Asked if the injury has worsened in recent days, Ten Hag said, 'We don't believe that." THE BIGGER PICTURE Tillman was a breakout star for the USMNT at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, registering five goal contributions as the U.S. made the final of the competition. He was handed the No. 10 shirt at Leverkusen, replacing club icon Florian Wirtz in the attacking midfield as he departed for Liverpool for a British-record fee of $157M (€134 million) Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga last season, behind Bayern Munich. Tillman is coming off of two straight Eredivisie titles with PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie. DID YOU KNOW? Tillman's older brother, Timothy, has one cap with the USMNT. He plays for LAFC in Major League Soccer. WHAT NEXT FOR TILLMAN? Leverkusen kick off their 2025 campaign on Aug. 15 with a DFB-Pokal match against fourth-tier side Sonnenhof Großaspach. Their Bundesliga season begins on Aug. 23 with a home match against Hoffenheim.
