Nats' Cairo and Mets' Mendoza become first Venezuelans to manage against each other in MLB
On Tuesday night, Cairo and Mendoza of the New York Mets became the first Venezuelans in big league history to manage against each other.
'It's two countrymen, friends, and now to be exchanging the lineup at home plate, we're excited about it. We're proud to represent the Latinos in the United States, represent our country in the United States, and of course represent our organizations,' Cairo said. 'To me, it's a dream come true.'
Mendoza was hired by the Mets after the 2023 season, becoming the third Venezuelan manager in major league history. Cairo became the fourth when Washington promoted him to interim manager in July after firing Dave Martinez.
'It's just an honor for both of us,' Mendoza said. 'I'm humbled by it. You know, this is a big deal back home. I didn't recognize that until it was brought up to me. But yeah, it's a special day.'
The 51-year-old Cairo and the 45-year-old Mendoza both have ties to the New York Yankees organization. The Yankees were one of nine teams Cairo played for during a 17-year career, and Mendoza was a longtime coach with the organization before the Mets hired him. The two overlapped when Cairo worked as a Yankees minor league infield coordinator.
Ozzie Guillén was the first Venezuelan to manage in the majors. He led the Chicago White Sox from 2004-11 and won a World Series title in 2005, then managed the Miami Marlins in 2012. Al Pedrique was Arizona's manager for half of the 2024 season, but the Diamondbacks and White Sox did not play each other that year.
Asked if he was surprised the milestone had not come sooner, Cairo said the path to becoming a big league manager was difficult for everyone.
'You have to through the minor leagues, you have work your way up. You have to really work,' he said. 'Nothing is easy and you've got to earn it. And, you know, he earned it. I think I earned it.'

Watch: Yankees set MLB record with nine home runs vs. Rays
1 of 5 | New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger went 2 for 3 with two home runs, four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in a win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. File Photo by David Tulis/UPI | License Photo Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Cody Bellinger was one of three New York Yankees players to homer twice in a nine-homer barrage, leading to an MLB record and domination of the Tampa Bay Rays. Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman Jose Caballero also hit two homers apiece in the 13-3 win Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. Designated hitter Aaron Judge, second baseman Jazz Chisholm and catcher Ben Rice hit the Yankees' other home runs. "We have a really good offense," Bellinger told reporters. "I think [with] the ebbs and flows of a 162-game season, it's not always going to be pretty, but we all believe in each other. "The talent is there. We are doing a good job of putting it all together. It's been fun to be a part of." With their detonation, the Yankees, who also hit a franchise-record-tying nine home runs in a March 29 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, became the first team in MLB history with multiple games with at least nine home runs. "To do it twice, that's remarkable," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "There were some ones that were seriously hit too." Yankees and Rays players waited out a two-hour weather delay before invading George M. Steinbrenner Field. Rays starter Shane Baz walked center fielder Trent Grisham to start the game. Judge ignited the slugfest three pitches later when he crushed a 1-1 fastball to center field for a 429-foot solo homer. Bellinger and Stanton homered in the next two at-bats, smacking respective 381- and 386-foot solo shots, and the rout was on. Caballero belted a 322-foot, two-run homer in the second for a 5-0 Yankees lead. The Rays finally got on the scoreboard with an RBI single from catcher Nick Fortes in the bottom of the inning. They scored their second run when left fielder Chandler Simpson grounded into a force out in the next exchange. Chisholm pushed the Yankees lead back to four runs with a 382-foot solo homer in the top of the third. Stanton roped a 376-foot, three-run homer to center in the top of the fourth. Rice followed with a 406-foot homer in the next exchange. Bellinger hit his second round-tripper of the night when he connected for a 348-foot, two-run homer in the top of the sixth. The Rays scored their final run on an RBI single from right fielder Jake Mangum in the bottom of the eight. Caballero crushed the final home run of the night when he belted a 1-2 slider from relief pitcher Mason Montgomery to left center for a 389-foot solo shot. Baz allowed seven hits and six runs, off of five home runs, over just three innings of work to drop to 8-10 this season. Bellinger went 4 for 5 with three RBIs, three runs scored and a strikeout. Stanton went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Caballero went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Chisholm and Judge also recorded two hits apiece in the victory. The Yankees (68-57) have now won six of their last seven games, including their last four. They sit in second place in the American League East, five games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays (74-53). The Rays (61-65) are in fourth, 12.5 games behind the Blue Jays. They will host the Yankees in a series finale at 7:35 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Tampa.

A's at Twins picks and predictions A's 6, Twins 4 Moneyline BET A'S (+110). The last time Ober pitched a game and the Twins won, it was still spring (May 19 in a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians to be exact). Minnesota has lost 10 straight games in which he has appeared, 6 of those coming at home. Meanwhile, the A's are finding some rhythm offensively, scoring at least 5 runs in 4 straight games, tallying 28 runs in those contests. The Twins have scored 3 or fewer runs in 5 of their last 8 games. Expect the road side to stay hot and take A'S (+110). Run line/Against the spread PASS. There's no playable run-line value. The A's (-190) are far too expensive to consider as an underdog, while the Twins (+155) are too risky as a favorite, especially with Ober on the mound. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (-110). Given the starting pitching shortcomings on both sides, the Over is the play here. The Twins are 9-5-1 O/U in their last 15 games and have allowed at least 6 runs in 3 of their last 4 games. They have gone Over in 3 of Ober's last 5 starts as well. The A's are 4-1 O/U in their last 5 games and 64-57-6 O/U on the season. In 2 of Ginn's last 3 outings, the team has allowed at least 7 runs. The pluses, minuses and stark reality of a looming MLB realignment
Rob Manfred has said he plans to step down as MLB commissioner in Jan. 2029. Who knows what baseball will look like by then? Manfred's latest plans for surgery on America's pastime were revealed Sunday night, when the commissioner discussed the potential for MLB expansion and geographic realignment, potentially ending the existence of the American and National Leagues. The gut instinct is repulsion, partly from the source of this proposal and his casual indifference to the tradition of a game more greatly linked to past generations than any American sport. The National League was born (1876) barely a decade after the end of the Civil War. The American League opened shop (1901) before the Wright brothers' first flight.
