One Nation One Election: From Maharashtra to J-K, parliamentary panel to go on 4 ‘study tours'
The joint committee of Parliament looking into holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, referred to as 'One Nation, One Election', will go on four 'study tours' in May and June to gather views on two Bills on the matter.
'The study tours will begin on May 17. We will cover Maharashtra on May 17-18. Then, Dehradun (Uttarakhand) from May 19 to May 21. We will cover the state of Uttarakhand,' P P Chaudhary, the chairperson of the committee, said on Tuesday, ahead of the panel's seventh meeting.
'In June, we will cover J-K and Ladakh as well. People from far-off places can also come in front of the committee. And then, we will go to Chandigarh and we will be covering a Union Territory and will cover Haryana and Punjab as well,' he added.
Chaudhary said that in a democracy, differences of opinion are good. 'Everyone has their opinion. There could be different opinions in the committee, too. One time will come when all the members will agree to it because all the leaders think for the nation and will agree for the nation's interest,' he said ahead of Tuesday's meeting.
The two Bills, called the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on December 17, 2024, and referred to the joint committee.
The last meeting of the panel on March 25 had seen Attorney General R Venkatramani and former Delhi High Court chief justice D N Patel tell the committee that the Bills do not go against the Constitution, with Justice Patel saying that they could undergo some changes.
On March 11, former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha member Ranjan Gogoi had cautioned the committee on the constitutional validity of some provisions of the Bills.

Atishi slams BJP over Bhoomiheen camp demolition, says party has betrayed promises
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Minister Atishi on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of betraying its election promises, alleging that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is going to demolish huts in the Bhoomiheen Camp area of Kalkaji tomorrow (on June 11) without allotting flats to all eligible residents. Speaking at a press conference shortly after being detained and released by Delhi Police during anti-demolition protests, Atishi claimed the DDA and police forcibly evicted residents on Tuesday, despite earlier assurances by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta that no jhuggi (slum dwelling) would be demolished. 'Just two days ago, the Chief Minister said no jhuggi is being or will ever be demolished in Delhi. That lie has now been exposed. Today, in Bhoomiheen Camp, police, CRPF, and other forces surrounded the area and began forcefully removing people from homes where they have lived for 30 to 50 years. Their children study and work here,' she said. Atishi pointed to the availability of DDA flats nearby, alleging that while over 3,000 flats have been constructed, some as close as 500 meters from the site, only about 1,800 have been allotted. 'If homes are being demolished, where will these people go? The DDA has built 3,024 flats, but only 1,832 have been allotted so far. Why haven't the remaining flats been given to the jhuggi residents? BJP had promised 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan' (where there's a hut, there'll be a home), but more than half the people haven't received anything,' she said. She also questioned the Delhi government's claim that it is merely complying with court orders. Atishi alleged that when the residents approached the Delhi High Court seeking flats, the DDA and government opposed them and instead advocated for demolition. 'The court's order came after the BJP-led DDA and government told the court that these jhuggis should be razed. Now they are hiding behind the court's order,' Atishi said. A resident of the Bhoomiheen Camp also spoke at the press conference, alleging that while the government claims over 1,000 people have been allotted flats, many families were left out of the official survey and denied allotments. 'Our matter was in the Delhi High Court. The government says 1,029 people have been given flats, but they hid the fact that over 100 people were not even included in the survey. That's why we went to court. Though we got a stay initially, government lawyers opposed us, and we didn't get further time from the court,' the resident said. Earlier in the day, while participating in an anti-demolition protest, Atishi said, 'BJP is going to demolish these jhuggis tomorrow, and I am being jailed today because I am raising my voice for these slum dwellers. 'BJP aur Rekha Gupta ko jhuggi waalon ki haay lagegi.' ... BJP will never come back.' On Monday, June 9, the DDA issued notices to residents of Bhoomiheen Camp in Kalkaji Extension, directing them to vacate their premises within three days, June 8, 9, and 10, following High Court orders for the demolition of illegal structures. According to the notice, residents have been asked to vacate voluntarily within three days. The notice states that failure to comply will lead to demolition action by the authorities. 'Any belongings left inside the huts during demolition will be removed, and the agency will not be held responsible for any damage or loss to personal property,' the DDA notice read. It also urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with officials to ensure a smooth and orderly process. (ANI)

Delhi Cabinet approves ordinance to regulate fee hikes; to be implemented retrospectively from April 1
The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved an ordinance to regulate fee hikes by private schools. Education Minister Ashish Sood, who announced the decision, said the ordinance will be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for approval, following which it will be implemented retrospectively from April 1 this year. 'L-G to take it forward' Addressing a press conference, the Minister said the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Ordinance, 2025 had been approved in the eighth Cabinet meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party government and that the ordinance would be sent to the President through Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena. The announcement comes amid growing outrage among students and parents over 'unauthorised' fee hikes and alleged mistreatment of students by private schools. Mr. Sood said, 'We have paved the way for the [implementation of the] law. From today, the exploitation and extortion [of students and parents] will end. Now, they can confidently plan their family and fees through a fixed process.' In April, the Cabinet had approved a draft of the Bill, which includes stringent penalties against 'coercive actions' by schools, and fines of up to ₹50,000 per student against schools found to be taking punitive action against students over non-payment of increased fees, such as isolating them in libraries, as alleged by parents of some students at Delhi Public School, Dwarka. The Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025 also mandates the constitution of three regulatory committees at the school, district, and State levels to monitor and approve fee hikes. The draft Bill proposes to impose fines ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh on schools found hiking fees illegally. However, the Bill is yet to be tabled in the Assembly. 'Needs more debate' While some parents welcomed the announcement about the ordinance, others suggested that the law should be introduced as a Bill through the Assembly after discussion with the relevant stakeholders. Aprajita Gautam, president of the Delhi Parents' Association, said, 'We welcome the announcement, but it should be introduced through the Assembly route as a Bill after considering suggestions from parents.' 'Subsequently, a copy of the Bill should be made public because lakhs of parents are impacted by it, and have a right to know about the law,' she added.

Kamal Haasan, 5 Others To Be Elected Unopposed To Rajya Sabha
Chennai: Actor-politician Kamal Haasan and five others, including three nominees of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, are all set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, with their nominations being accepted on Tuesday. A release from the office of the Returning Officer/Additional Secretary, Legislative Assembly Secretariat, said the nominations of Makkal Neethi Maiam founder Haasan, DMK nominees P Wilson, SR Sivalingam and Rajathi and IS Inbadurai and M Dhanapal (both AIADMK), were taken up for scrutiny on Tuesday. After scrutiny, they have been declared as approved, the release said. The nominations of seven independent candidates were rejected. With the nomination of these candidates being accepted, they are now set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Wilson will be representing the state for a successive term while this would be Haasan's maiden innings in a House of representatives. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Assembly polls in Coimbatore South and lost to BJP Mahila Morcha chief Vanathi Srinivasan. He joined the DMK-led bloc last year. As an ally of the DMK, Haasan-led MNM was allotted a Rajya Sabha seat as per an understanding reached between the two parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Haasan campaigned for the DMK alliance in last year's Parliamentary election. Six Rajya Sabha members from Tamil Nadu, including DMK ally MDMK's top leader Vaiko and PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss are set to retire on July 24, 2025 and the Election Commission had last month announced elections to the Upper House from Tamil Nadu.
