Langstaff's 'excellent' form pleases boss Neil

BBC News3 days ago
Millwall boss Alex Neil was delighted to see Macaulay Langstaff continue his pre-season form into the start of the new Championship campaign as the striker's late goal earned them a 2-1 win at Norwich.Langstaff was a prolific scorer for previous club Notts County, but only found the net once in 36 appearances for the Lions last term. He replaced Josh Coburn in the 80th minute at Carrow Road with the score 1-1 and only need three minutes to slot home Alfie Doughty's ball."Macca has been excellent for us in pre-season. He scored a very similar goal the other day. It was a great finish by him and I'm really pleased," said Neil."It was a great way to start the season for us. There has been a lot of talk this week externally about our record here, I think we hadn't won since 1968, which is a hell of a long time."So it's really nice to get that off our back and it's really nice to get the win. I thought we deserved the win and I thought in the second half we were much improved."Millwall are away to Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Joe Gomez returns to Liverpool training ahead of Friday's Premier League opener

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has returned to training ahead of Friday's Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth in a timely boost for head coach Arne Slot. The 28-year-old, the club's longest-serving current player, returned home from the tour of the Far East early with an Achilles injury and was subsequently sidelined for three weeks. But he was pictured with the rest of his team-mates on Wednesday as preparations ramp up for the defending champions' season opener at Anfield. His absence had left Slot with just two senior centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate and questions had been asked as to whether the Reds boss had left himself light in that area after allowing Jarell Quansah to join Bayer Leverkusen. However, moves are progressing for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and Parma's 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni, which would bring better balance to the squad.

'Standout' Stephenson set for Tannadice return

Jim Goodwin is confident of securing a deal to bring Liverpool's Luca Stephenson back to Dundee United and says it "shouldn't be an issue" to free up a loan space for the 21-year-old shone during a season-long loan at Tannadice last term, making 34 appearances and scoring three times."Luca was one of our standout performers last season and won the young player of the year award. I have made my feelings known to everybody about my thoughts on Luca," said manager Goodwin."We are still talking with Liverpool. It is not quite finalised yet, but I am really hopeful and quietly confident that we will get some positive news on that and get it over the line."United currently have six loan players, which is the maximum number permitted under SPFL rules."We are at that point at the moment so we need to tidy one or two bits up on an admin front but it shouldn't be an issue," added Goodwin, who is reportedly set to convert, external Finnish Dario Naamo's loan move into a permanent United boss added: "A lot of the loans have been set up in a way that there is the option to buy at the end of the loan. If we need to speed that process up in order to free up a loan place then we are well within our rights to do that."Danish midfielder Julius Eskesen this week became United's 12th recruit of the summer window, arriving on a two-year deal from Norwegian side said: "Really pleased to get Julius done, it is the type of player that we are just missing at the moment in the midfield, just one that can tie it all together."We have got guys in there who are really comfortable on the ball but Julius will give us that something a little bit different."He has a really good range of passing, plays forward, can see things that maybe sometimes other players can't, so hopefully we will get to see him at the weekend."
