Smoke break leads to dramatic ride for man clinging to high-speed train in Austria
The man late on Saturday grabbed onto the outside of the train at St Poelten, west of Vienna, railways spokesman Herbert Hofer said, and was later taken on board after the train performed an emergency stop.
'It is irresponsible, this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying,' he said.
'And you're not just putting yourself in danger, if you end up under the train there's rescuers, there's police, fire service that come,' he added.
The railjet train was on its way from Zurich in Switzerland to the Austrian capital and left Sankt Poelten on time but arrived in Vienna with a seven-minute delay, Hofer said.
Citing a passenger on board, Austrian tabloid Heute said the man jumped into the space between two carriages after the train began to set off from a planned stop in Sankt Poelten.
The man had taken advantage of being at a station to smoke a cigarette on the platform, Heute said.

Hong Kong police have arrested three women for allegedly stealing HK$1 million (US$127,387) from a pet supplies company. The force said on Tuesday that the three suspects, aged 32 to 57, were apprehended the previous day in Wong Tai Sin, Tseung Kwan O and Cheung Sha Wan following a report filed in mid-July. An investigation revealed that the company's owner discovered the missing money while reviewing accounts from 2020 to 2021. The three local women are suspected of transferring funds from the company's online store payment account to their accounts, as well as altering documents to evade internal audits. The trio have been released on bail and are required to report back to police in mid-September. The case is being handled by the crime investigation unit of the force's Wong Tai Sin district.

1 dead, dozens wounded or trapped after explosion at US Steel plant in Pennsylvania
An explosion on Monday at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has left one dead and dozens wounded or trapped under the rubble, with emergency workers on site trying to rescue victims, officials said. The explosion sent black smoke spiralling into the midday sky in the Monongahela Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century. An Allegheny County emergency services spokeswoman, Kasey Reigner, said one person died in the explosion and two were currently believed to be unaccounted for. Multiple other people were treated for injuries, Reigner said. Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire at the plant started at around 10:51 am. The explosion sent a shock through the community and led to officials asking residents to stay away from the scene so emergency workers could respond. 'It felt like thunder,' Zachary Buday, a construction worker near the scene, told local news broadcaster WTAE-TV. 'Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, and shook the building, and then when we saw the dark smoke coming up from the steel mill and put two and two together, and it's like something bad happened.' Dozens were injured and the county was sending 15 ambulances, on top of the ambulances supplied by local emergency response agencies, Reigner said.
