Mumbai: Denial of physical relationship to husband and suspecting him of an extra-marital affair amounts to cruelty and is hence a ground for divorce, the Bombay High Court held while refusing relief to a woman challenging a family court's divorce order.A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale on Thursday said the woman's conduct can be construed as "cruelty" against her husband.The court dismissed the woman's petition challenging a family court order allowing the man's plea for divorce. The couple got married in 2013, but started living separately in December 2014. In 2015, the man approached the family court in Pune seeking divorce on the grounds of cruelty, which was granted.The woman, in her plea, stated that her in-laws had harassed her, but she still had love for her husband and hence, does not wish for the marriage to end.The man, however, claimed cruelty on several grounds, including denial of physical intimacy, suspecting him of having extra-marital affairs and causing mental agony by embarrassing him in front of his family, friends and employees..Refusal to consummate marriage, denial of physical intimacy amounts to mental cruelty: MP High Court. He further claimed that his wife deserted him when she left his house and went to her parents' home."The appellant's (woman) behaviour with the man's employees is sure to cause agony to him. Similarly, humiliating the man in front of his friends is also cruelty to him," the high court held.It noted that the woman's apathetic and indifferent behaviour with the man's specially abled sister is also sure to cause pain to him and his family members, the court said.The court, while dismissing the woman's plea, said the marriage between the couple is broken without any possibility of being mended.

Citing the success of the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) trinity, Modi said that the initiative had plugged massive leakages in welfare schemes and prevented the theft of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore that was allegedly being siphoned off through 10 lakh fake beneficiaries under previous regimes. "Approximately 10 crore beneficiaries listed under various schemes such as the ration card, gas subsidy, and scholarships were found to be nonexistent. These individuals, who never actually existed, were being used by previous governments to funnel money to middlemen. However, these 10 crore fake names have now been removed from the list of beneficiaries by the incumbent government. According to an estimate, this cleanup has resulted in savings of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore, which would have otherwise gone into the wrong hands. Imagine theft of Rs 4.30 lakh crore. Now, this amount is being used for the development of this country," the prime minister said. PM Modi was speaking at an event at Kartavya Path after inaugurating Kartavya Bhavan (Common Central Secretariat Building) 3, the first of the 10 state-of-the-art Central government office complexes planned as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. These blocks will house offices of all ministries and associated departments, presently functioning from Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, North and South Blocks and other buildings located at different locations.

Officials from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) seized ₹ 79,282 unaccounted cash from the office of Arcot municipality in Ranipet on Wednesday. DVAC sources said that the municipality has engaged 102 temporary sanitary workers on contract basis mainly for door-to-door garbage collection from households in the town. As per norms, each worker should be paid Rs 489 for their work on a daily basis. However, it has been alleged by sanitary workers that they were paid only Rs 370 for each worker daily by the civic body. Sanitary workers also complained of non-payment of wages for the past three months by the civic body. Thw workers have complained to DVAC that more money has been deducted from civic officials for Provident Fund and ESI from their wages as against stipulated percentage of wages to it. Based on complaints by affected workers to the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, a six-member team led by V. Ganesh, Deputy SP, DVAC (Ranipet) conducted the searches between 8. 30 p.m on Tuesday to 4.30 a.m on Wednesday morning. DVAC officials also questioned Municipal Commissioner S. Venketalakshman and other senior municipal officials present during the searches in the office. After hours of search, DVAC officials recovered the unaccounted cash from washrooms and storerooms in the municipal building. As most of the financial transactions are done online, DVAC also seized mobile phones of senior municipal officials for verification of cash transactions. A detailed investigation is underway.

Cuttack: The Supreme Court refused to grant relief to senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi in a corruption case, dismissing his plea challenging an order by Orissa high court that had denied him anticipatory bail. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih in its order on Aug 4 said it was 'not inclined to interfere' with the high court's July 28 ruling. However, the court allowed Sethi the liberty to surrender and apply for regular bail, saying it would be considered 'on its own merits'. The case stems from the arrest of a group general manager of a public sector unit on Dec 8, 2024, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a Bhubaneswar-based real estate firm. During interrogation of the manager, Sethi's name reportedly emerged, following which CBI raided the senior bureaucrat's residence on Feb 18 this year. Sethi had earlier approached the high court for anticipatory bail after his petition seeking to quash the CBI probe was dismissed on June 20. The high court termed his plea 'premature' as the investigation was still at an early stage.
