Three SA U20 stars called up to join Springboks
Some of these stars have now been rewarded with a call up from Rassie Erasmus as the Springbok coach once again demonstrated some innovative thinking when naming his latest squad for the Rugby Championship.
Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste and Haashim Pead have earned the opportunity to train with the Springbok group during their two-week conditioning camp in Johannesburg starting on Sunday 27 July, to orientate them into the Springbok culture.
Hlekani impressed with his powerful performances at blindside flank, Pead set the tournament alight as the standout scrumhalf in the U20 championship, while outside back Cheswill Jooste was a constant attacking threat.
Speaking about the young guns invited to train with the squad for the next two weeks, Erasmus said: 'We are tremendously proud of the Junior Springboks for winning the World Rugby U20 Championship and we were thrilled to see the talent coming through the junior ranks, so we opted to invite three of them to join us to expose them to our structures and the standards required at top international level.
'We believe this camp will benefit them significantly, and we are excited to see how they slot in and train with us.
'Unfortunately, we had to limit the size of the squad to ensure maximum outputs and more individual attention at our training sessions, so although more players could have been invited, we could only select three.'

Relebohile Mofokeng move to Al-Ettifaq may be blocked for now
Orlando Pirates starlet Relebohile Mofokeng has once again been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia, as per fresh reports from the Middle East. Sources point to Al-Ettifaq as the club showing serious intent in acquiring the 20-year-old sensation. According to Al-Midan Sports, the Saudi outfit is pushing for a deal and believes a move is imminent. However, there's a major snag standing in the way. The Saudi Pro League's foreign player regulations could derail the deal entirely. Clubs may only register two foreign players under the age of 21, and Al-Ettifaq already have both slots filled. Mohau Nkota (20), joined earlier this year from South Africa. Joao Costa (20), a Portuguese forward, currently sidelined with an ACL injury, expected to return in October. This complication overlaps with a key detail. Mofokeng turns 21 in October. If Al-Ettifaq proceed with the transfer before then, they would either need to deregister an existing U21 player or wait until Mofokeng becomes eligible outside the age-specific quota. Despite growing attention, Orlando Pirates have already rejected offers from clubs in Israel and the Netherlands, standing firm on keeping Mofokeng for now. He remains part of the Buccaneers' plans, named in their 34-man squad for the 2025/2026 season. The winger's blistering 2024/2025 campaign, featuring 12 goals and 15 assists, has positioned him as one of South Africa's brightest prospects. With the regulatory issue and rising interest from Europe and the Middle East, Al-Ettifaq must act fast or risk losing out entirely. Whether they opt to reshuffle their squad or delay the signing until Mofokeng's 21st birthday remains uncertain. As it stands, the situation hangs in the balance. But the buzz around Mofokeng only intensifies. Will the Bucs keep their rising star Relebohile Mofokeng, or will Saudi millions lure him away? Rassie unsure if Wallabies will arrive here down under
Rassie Erasmus admits he doesn't know whether the Wallabies will be battle ready, flat or punch drunk as a result of the series against the British & Irish Lions before heading to South Africa for a two-Test series in the Rugby Championships against the Springboks. Series' against the B&I Lions are usually a battle of attrition that also take a significant emotional toll on players. Australia are 2-0 down with a Test to play in Sydney on Saturday, a series defeat that could affect their morale and confidence ahead of the southern hemisphere tournament in which the Boks are defending champions. The Wallabies might also take hope from some decent performances among the defeats. 'They might have three injuries in one position and then they might be in trouble. But that's thinking negatively,' the Bok coach said. 'There will be more energy because Joe [Schmidt, the head coach] is stepping down and Les Kiss is taking over and I think Les is touring. We know it will be a really competitive Wallabies team coming to South Africa.'

'Boy, don't give up': Orlando Pirates star told to fight for his place
Orlando Pirates legend Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi has urged Bucs striker Tshegofatso Mabasa to fight for his position. The 28-year-old did not start many games last season under Jose Riveiro but could be down the pecking order once again under the new coach. Mabasa is currently on 46 goals for the Buccaneers and needs just seven goals to break Tso's record. Although his goalscoring record is on the line, Vilakazi has urged the Orlando Pirates striker to fight hard to earn his place back in the starting eleven. 'Boy, don't give up; continue to work hard. Yes, I've seen in some pre-season games that you were not that featured like other strikers,' Vilakazi told the Omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel . 'But don't give up. You know what I'm talking about. You know you went to Swallows because you didn't get game time, but you did very well and came back and continued where you left off. For me, it shows character,' the former Orlando Pirates midfielder added. 'You can't keep a good man down. Boy, they can bring 20 other strikers, I'm telling you from my heart, but I don't think they will close you down and make you not be seen. You're a once-special player who knows the poles.' 'So far in my eyes, at Pirates, you're the only striker where even when I'm sleeping and you say, 'Who do you want to put in as a striker?' It's always going to be you.' Orlando Pirates open their 2025/26 season against Polokwane City this Saturday in the MTN8. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
