'Boy, don't give up': Orlando Pirates star told to fight for his place
The 28-year-old did not start many games last season under Jose Riveiro but could be down the pecking order once again under the new coach.
Mabasa is currently on 46 goals for the Buccaneers and needs just seven goals to break Tso's record. Although his goalscoring record is on the line, Vilakazi has urged the Orlando Pirates striker to fight hard to earn his place back in the starting eleven.
'Boy, don't give up; continue to work hard. Yes, I've seen in some pre-season games that you were not that featured like other strikers,' Vilakazi told the Omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel .
'But don't give up. You know what I'm talking about. You know you went to Swallows because you didn't get game time, but you did very well and came back and continued where you left off. For me, it shows character,' the former Orlando Pirates midfielder added.
'You can't keep a good man down. Boy, they can bring 20 other strikers, I'm telling you from my heart, but I don't think they will close you down and make you not be seen. You're a once-special player who knows the poles.'
'So far in my eyes, at Pirates, you're the only striker where even when I'm sleeping and you say, 'Who do you want to put in as a striker?' It's always going to be you.'
Orlando Pirates open their 2025/26 season against Polokwane City this Saturday in the MTN8.

Kaizer Chiefs' defining 2025/26 season: Will they rebuild or regress?
The 2025/26 season has officially kicked off, with the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend. The top eight teams from last season are looking to begin their campaigns on a high note, with early silverware up for grabs. However, for the second season running, one of South African football's biggest names — Kaizer Chiefs — will once again watch from the sidelines after narrowly missing out on a top-eight finish, ending the last campaign in ninth position. Chiefs, however, ended last season on a positive note, lifting the Nedbank Cup. That triumph not only secured them a return to continental football via the CAF Confederation Cup, but also reignited belief within the club heading into this campaign. Expectations are high for the new season — at the very least, a top-eight finish is non-negotiable. The squad rebuild under new coach Nasreddine Nabi now moves into a critical phase, where visible improvement and consistency must replace last season's instability. Much of their previous struggles were self-inflicted. Defensive lapses, an inability to hold onto leads, and poor execution in key moments proved costly. Injuries, particularly at the back, also disrupted their campaign. But with the injection of new talent and a fresh sense of direction, there is renewed hope that this season could mark a turning point.

PUMA and Old School revive Bulls legacy with vintage jersey drop
PUMA South Africa and leisurewear brand Old School have collaborated to present Vodacom Bulls supporters with two limited edition jerseys honouring the legacy of their beloved team. 'The past seasons have seen a resurgence in traditional style rugby jerseys, so it made sense for PUMA and the Vodacom Bulls to work with Old School and craft something vintage which talks to all three brands' said Brett Bellinger, Marketing Director, PUMA South Africa. 'The result is the release of two premium, vintage-style jerseys. One featuring the original Barberton Daisy badge on the left breast, a true Old School classic. The second sports the current Bulls and Daisy lockup badge worn by the Vodacom Bulls team during matches in the URC season and any other competitions they compete in, a modern Old School classic.' THE STORY BEHIND THE JERSEY The campaign video to support the launch of the jerseys, has a cinematic aesthetic. It features current players, team legends and fans with a strong focus on character and storytelling, where the team's proud history lingers in every detail. Edgar Rathbone, CEO of the Blue Bulls Company, said: 'This partnership isn't just a nod to our roots; it's a statement of intent. Together with PUMA and Old School, we've created something that honours where we've come from while charging forward with style and pride. It's authentic, it's powerful, and it's unmistakably Vodacom Bulls. We're proud to stand behind a campaign that connects generations and strengthens the bond with our fans.' 'For us, it's always been about creating something people feel part of. Teaming up with the Blue Bulls and PUMA gave us the chance to do just that, to create something that brings generations together,' said co- founder of Old School, Stephan Steinmann. 'This collaboration isn't just about a jersey; it's about the pride, the memories, and the moments that make supporting the Bulls feel like home.' In addition to the two different badge options this cotton rugby jersey features: White twill collar for durability and contrast. Placket with hidden buttons. Long sleeves with ribbed cuffs. Embroidered PUMA logo and Old School backneck tape and side label. The fit is intended for comfort with structure, ideal to layer over a tee or to sit comfortably on its own. Arthur Zwane targets consistency as AmaZulu brace for MTN8 test against Stellenbosch
AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane and assistant Siboniso Vilakazi have a tough task to keep the club competitive during the opening rounds of the upcoming season. Image: Bacpagepix AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane believes the groundwork has been laid for a more consistent and competitive campaign as Usuthu gear up for the new season. AmaZulu kick things off with a tough MTN8 quarter-final clash away to Stellenbosch FC on Sunday at Cape Town Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm, and the match will be Zwane's first official outing of the 2025/26 campaign after finishing sixth in his debut season at the helm. The ex-Kaizer Chiefs mentor heads into his second term in charge with renewed authority after initially serving as co-coach alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi, who departed in February. From that point forward, Zwane steered the ship alone, guiding Usuthu to a respectable top-half finish in what was a transitional season for the club. With a full pre-season under his belt and new personnel added to the squad, Zwane is confident that AmaZulu are better equipped to handle the demands of a long campaign — starting with a tricky knockout assignment away from home. 🆕🟢🗞️ Usuthu faithful help us welcome: - Thando Ngwenya 🇿🇼 - Darren Johnson 🇿🇦 - Keagan Allan 🇿🇦 - Ryan Moon 🇿🇦 Our newest recruits for the 2025/26 season 🤝🏾#GqamaNgomqhele #HebeUsuthu #UsuthuTogether — AmaZulu FC (@AmaZuluFootball) July 29, 2025 Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ AmaZulu unveiled four new signings this week — Thando Ngwenya, Keagan Allan, Darren Johnson, and the returning Ryan Moon — as part of a broader plan to refresh the squad and add depth across the pitch. The announcement came alongside the launch of their new kit, marking the beginning of what Zwane hopes will be a season of growth and greater cohesion. After spending much of last season getting to know his players from the inside, Zwane has focused his energy on building a harmonious and driven squad. From technical development to player management, his time in charge has been about more than just tactics — it's been about culture. He has placed particular emphasis on creating an environment where players feel supported and valued, believing that happy players produce winning football — even in tough matches where the margins are slim. Sunday's trip to Stellenbosch, however, is anything but straightforward. The Cape Winelands side remain one of the most difficult teams to beat at home, boasting strong tactical organisation and a physical edge. AmaZulu will have to contend with unfamiliar conditions and a high-pressure knockout setting, but Zwane insists his side are both mentally and physically prepared. Stellenbosch FC have developed a reputation for being disciplined and difficult to break down, especially at home. The tie could come down to fine margins, where execution in both boxes and the ability to adapt to the Western Cape's unique playing conditions will be crucial. For Zwane, this clash is also a litmus test of how far the squad has come — and whether they can now mix it with the more settled sides in the top eight. The last time AmaZulu lifted silverware was in 1992, and while the MTN8 remains a tall order, it also presents a realistic shot at ending that drought.
