JinJin of K-pop group Astro exempted from military service

CNA03-06-2025
K-pop boy band Astro's leader and rapper JinJin has been exempted from military service.
Astro's agency Fantangio released an official statement on Monday (Jun 2), saying: 'JinJin has been deemed unfit for military duty following a detailed medical examination by the Military Manpower Administration due to health issues related to an autoimmune condition.'
In South Korea, upon turning 18, all able-bodied men are required by law to perform 18 to 21 months of military service.
The agency said: 'While his condition does not interfere with daily life, he requires regular hospital visits for examinations and ongoing management. Based on the medical opinion that it would be difficult for him to participate in military service under such circumstances, he has been granted an exemption from mandatory military duty."
'We sincerely thank all the fans for your constant love and support, and we kindly ask for your continued interest in JinJin's future endeavours," they added.
JinJin's fellow bandmate Cha Eun-woo will enlist in the military on Jul 28 and serve in the army's military band. The location and time of his enlistment will be kept confidential 'in order to prevent safety accidents due to crowding", according to Fantangio.
JinJin debuted as part of the six-member boy group in 2016 and was part of JinJin and Rocky, Astro's sub unit from 2022 to 2023.
In February this year, he held his first solo concert titled Jin Lab Vol 1 Find Your Groove at South Korea's Yes24 Wonderlock Hall.

Seoul blocks elderly ex-North Korean spy from going North: Civic group

SEOUL: An elderly North Korean ex-spy who spent decades in jail in the South and has pleaded to be sent to the North was prevented on Wednesday (Aug 20) from crossing the border by South Korean soldiers, a spokeswoman told AFP. Ahn Hak-sop, 95, is one of six elderly former North Korean soldiers and spies who have recently stepped up their demands that Seoul repatriate them to their ideological homeland. They were convicted in the South for anti-state activities and served decades behind bars for refusing to renounce communism. They have subsequently been released. Holding a North Korean flag, Ahn "walked a few hundred metres toward a military checkpoint and was stopped by personnel", a spokeswoman for a civic group campaigning for his return told AFP. Anh was taken to hospital. A photo carried by the Yonhap news agency showed Ahn holding the red-and-blue North Korean flag at the border - an act that could be punishable under Seoul's national security law. The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically still at war. Ahn was captured during the Korean War in 1953 while on an infiltration mission and remained imprisoned until 1995, a lengthy term that could have ended earlier had he agreed to embrace democracy. The civic group representing Ahn and the five others argues they should be recognised as "prisoners of war" and that their repatriation requests must be respected under the Geneva Convention. "I am a prisoner of war who came here in a North Korean military uniform under orders from the Workers' Party," Ahn said in a 2024 interview with local outlet Ganghwa News. "But the South Korean government did not treat me as such, and I was forced to spend more than 40 years in prison, subjected to numerous tortures." The civic group told AFP it would continue to press for the men's return. North Korea has yet to comment on the case. Seoul's Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, told AFP on Tuesday it was reviewing "various ways to address the issue". The ministry official added that more former convicts in similar situations were expected to demand repatriation, though the government had no precise figure on how many remain alive. In 2000, South Korea repatriated 63 "unconverted" former prisoners through the border truce village of Panmunjom during a brief period of rapprochement - the first and only such event to date.

‘She should have cooked/frozen it right away.' S'poreans say they don't blame FairPrice for worms in salmon

Photo Credit: Freepik/valeria_aksakova (for illustration purposes only) SINGAPORE: After a worm was discovered in a piece of salmon, FairPrice, where the fish was bought, issued an apology right away. An investigation into the issue will also be carried out by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), according to a report in Mothership. The salmon was purchased by a woman at a discounted price at a FairPrice outlet in Bedok North on Aug 12 and cooked by her mother three days later. The woman said that the worm she discovered while eating the salmon was about 6.5 cm long. Mothership, quoting The Straits Times, said that while she did not get diarrhoea after eating the fish, she had felt bloated. On Aug 19, FairPrice apologised in a statement, saying that it was carrying out an internal investigation with the supplier, and that it takes food safety and quality seriously. FairPrice has reached out to the woman and apologised for the inconvenience and alarm the incident caused her. See also The story of how You Tiao Man's business flourished amid COVID-19 Many netizens commenting on the report, while sympathetic to the woman, said they don't find fault with FairPrice, given that worms are quite commonly found in salmon, and when cooked or frozen properly, the risk of a person who consumes the salmon is minimised. The percentage of wild Pacific salmon affected by worms can be as high as 75 per cent based on data cited by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, CBC reported some years ago. The worms are anisakid nematodes, which are sometimes called herring worms or cod worms. There is little to no health risk to humans when the fish is properly prepared for consumption, said Michael Gänzle, Canada Research Chair in food microbiology and probiotics at the University of Alberta. Freezing the salmon for at least a week at -40 degrees Celsius will also kill the worms. 'Very common to get worms in salmon. The lady should have prepped her fish before cooking. I don't blame FairPrice,' wrote one Facebook user. See also Netizen sees rat in supermarket, staff says it is normal 'Can't cook three days later lah. If same day buy not cooking must put in freeze,' commented another. 'Seafood, especially fish, is very susceptible to all sorts of parasites. Salmon is one of the highest to be infected. Just make sure all is cooked well,' one netizen opined. 'Who doesn't know salmon has worms?' another chimed in. /TISG Read also: Customer gets only bits of salmon skin in $5.80 salmon soup () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });
