Rangers new manager hunt intensifies as Celtic diehards say Ancelotti will 'crack like the others'

Craig Swan took your calls as the Italian's credentials to get the job at Ibrox are assessed
Rangers' hunt for a new manager continues to dominate the Hotline.
Ibrox chiefs are seeking a full-time replacement for sacked Philippe Clement and it's a saga which is attracting much attention.

Rangers supporters are keen for answers and there's also some wondering why it's such a bone of discussion amongst Celtic fans.

Denis Bruce, Bishopbriggs, said: 'If Davide Ancelotti lands the Rangers ' job, I hope that he will have been made aware that it will put him in the spotlight relentlessly every day, his every decision and statement scrutinised.
'That pressure has cracked several Ibrox managers, who have left the club the worse for wear after being unable to endure those pressures which come with every poor result. Maybe he will be the exception and grow into being the miracle worker Rangers need if they are to get the monkey of Celtic off their back.'

Lewis Fotheringham, Mount Ellen, said: 'Rangers appointing Ancelotti as our next boss is a gamble we cannot afford to take, considering it didn't go so well for Pedro Caixinha or Michael Beale in recent years.
'Gerrard was a gamble that eventually came good. but that took three years. We can ill-afford to wait that long for success again.'
John Spence, South Ayrshire, said: 'So the hunt continues. It's starting to remind me of 2021 when Celtic spent all summer chasing Eddie Howe, who eventually knocked them back. Left scrambling, they had to grab whoever was available, in the shape of big Ange. Of course it worked for them, but it was as much about luck as judgement.

'Rangers' circumstances are different, they're not focusing on one individual. But if we're to have any chance of competing with Celtic next season, with the amount of work that will entail, we need a new manager in place now. We simply can't afford to leave this appointment to a last minute lottery.'
Kenneth Hutton said: 'Do all of the Celtic fans that plague the Hotline realise that the dross from the upmarket side of Glasgow have the same Old Firm results for last season. Two wins, two draws and two losses each. Rangers have only to buy a couple of quality defenders and we will not only compete but win the title next season.'

Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: 'I wish that the Celtic Crew would stop speculating about the next Rangers Manager. Dry your eyes boys, please no more tears. Tiny Tears McGregor and Co will be put out of their misery soon.'
Alan Flett said: 'How amusing to hear Celtic fans jumping to the defence of their greetin' faced captain. Who cares what he's won? He's a bang average player in a bang average team. As for their precious Kyogo making a return? Bring it on! He's yet another bang average player who couldn't hack it outside the Gallowgate doss house.'
Dr Robert S Pender said: 'I forecast Brendan Rodgers will move on by Christmas due to the gaining power that Rangers will have. He is already looking for an escape.'

Elsewhere, John Scott, Grassmoor, had a view on the merits and set-up of the play-off system and said: 'Hibs have failed twice in the play-offs. 2014 relegated and 2016 where we failed in a bid for promotion.
'Rangers too failed to gain promotion in 2015. Three ties the majority lapped up by cheering on the underdogs of Motherwell, Hamilton and Falkirk. No offence, but who but their own fans got excited about County v Livi?
'Gates of 2653 and 4550 is a million miles from the 50,000 that watched AFC Wimbledon v Walsall in the EFL2 Playoff Final at Wembley.
'There's no great interest if our smaller clubs are involved in Scotland. Can we not consider relegating three clubs. A proper battle to avoid relegation and an exciting, fairer fight for promotion from our Championship. Games we will all want to see.'

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey to Celtic could prove major coup after what Pep Guardiola said about Man City prodigy

Brendan Rodgers is said to be lining up a loan swoop for the highly-rated England youth international Celtic are said to be lining up a loan move for Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. ‌ And the teenage star has already been tipped as the future of the Citizens' defence by Pep Guardiola. ‌ Highly-rated Simpson-Pusey, 19, burst onto the scene at the Etihad last season and immediately caught the eye. ‌ The England youth international made six first-team appearances - including two Champions League outings against Sporting Lisbon and Feyenoord. Simpson-Pusey was also crowned EPL 2 Player of the Year after captaining Man City's reserves to title glory, seeing off competition from Hoops new Bhoy Callum Osmand at Fulham. The youngster actually faced Celtic during City's pre-season tour of the USA in 2024, as Brendan Rodgers' side edged out 4-3 winners. He was then called upon by Guardiola throughout the campaign as the dethroned Premier League champions suffered an injury crisis. And the breakthrough talent seriously impressed his manager, with Guardiola hailing him as one for the future after his display in a 2-1 defeat at Brighton. All-conquering Guardiola said: 'The guy played really good, the young lad again, with this composure and duels and everything was good. It's not easy for him. ‌ 'Normally the young lads, they must come in with support from the team, with Rodri in front of them, right? With the best Kyle [Walker], and defenders, and now we support him. 'Now he's playing in a position that is difficult for him, but he performed unbelievably. We have a central defender to help us for the future, for the next years. I'm really pleased. Always there is good news when the situation goes bad, and this is one of them.' Guardiola revealed in December that he was tempted to throw in the rising star in the heat of a Manchester derby. He added: 'For example against (Manchester) United I thought to put Jahmai (Simpson-Pusey); he's played really good, but that pressure in that situation, it's a little bit…' Having offloaded Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, Celtic are in the market for more defensive cover. ‌ At least one winger, midfielder and main striker are also on Rodgers' wishlist as the champions kick off their title defence this weekend. Rangers still a 'work in progress' as they prepare for Panathinaikos

Herald football writer Stephen McGowan thinks Rangers will be "difficult to predict" against Panathinaikos on Wednesday night. Russell Martin's men head to Athens with a 2-0 advantage for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier. They head into their midweek match following a 2-2 draw with English Championship Middlesbrough in a pre-season friendly at the weekend, during which the new boss played a totally different starting XI than at Ibrox last midweek. "Going to Athens 2-0 up on Wednesday and you have to wonder, does he stick with that?" McGowan told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "Does he try to be just a little bit more pragmatic? Would that go against the way he manages? So that's going to be an interesting time. "I don't think the game against Middlesbrough would have told him a great deal about his starting lineup. "I think the problem for Rangers is that they are a work in progress is still very difficult to predict what will happen this season, let alone on Wednesday night."The one thing they have done is they've upset teams like Panathinaikos. They're good at hitting on the break. They're good at pressing the opposition into mistakes. "I don't think the friendly tells you very much what was going to happen Wednesday night, but it's going to be really fascinating to see how Russell Martin plays it."

Oliver Antman to Rangers takes fresh twist as winger clear on transfer non negotiable

The Go Ahead Eagles wide man is on the Ibrox shopping list this summer Go Ahead Eagles winger Oliver Antman has reported for training on Monday morning despite Rangers ramping up their interest. ‌ A wide man is high-up on Russell Martin's shopping list having already expressed an interest in Crystal Palace 's Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – but the Eredivise side are also expecting an offer from the Scottish Premiership side for the 23-year-old Antman. ‌ A fee of around £5million has been reported for the Finland international after he netted seven goals and an impressive 17 assists to help fire his club to Dutch Cup glory last term. ‌ But Voetbal International claim that progress has faltered in a deal and Antman has now reported "to the training ground in Deventer on Monday morning." Sheffield United had been strongly linked with Antman along with Club Brugge with Eagles' director Jan Willem van Dop insisted Antman wouldn't leave on the cheap. The forward doesn't appear to be in any rush to leave - insisting it is more important for him to enjoy his football rather than land a big money move. He told Finnish outlet YLE last month: 'The big thing is also that I enjoy myself on and off the pitch. "I like living in Deventer and I like playing for Go Ahead Eagles. It's really good to be there. ‌ 'It wouldn't be a bad thing if I stayed in Holland. I enjoy playing there. But we'll see what the summer brings.'
