NATO Ukraine support: Mark Rutte says alliance ensuring Kyiv has tools to stay in fight ahead of Trump-Putin summit

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance is 'making sure that Ukraine has what it needs to stay in the fight' ahead of the Aug. 15 meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not been invited to the meeting, though US officials have indicated a potential future trilateral summit. In an interview on CBS's Face the Nation , Rutte emphasized NATO's coordination role. 'And, as you said, NATO is coordinating all of this through our command in Wiesbaden, making sure that Ukraine has what it needs to stay in the fight and be in the best possible position when it comes to negotiations on a ceasefire [and] a peace deal,' he said. Zelensky rejected the proposal on X, calling it a 'stillborn' decision if made without Ukraine's involvement. Ceasefire talks, defense spending, and NATO Ukraine support initiatives Rutte acknowledged that Ukraine may initially be excluded from the Aug. 15 talks until conditions for credible negotiations are met. 'What will happen on Friday is testing Putin by President Trump,' he said. 'And, obviously, when it comes to peace talks, the ceasefire, and what happens after that on territories, on security guarantees for Ukraine, Ukraine will have to be and will be involved.' Live Events The NATO chief commended Trump for initiating dialogue with Russia in February, breaking what Rutte described as a diplomatic 'deadlock' left from former President Joe Biden's strategy of isolating Moscow. Rutte also noted recent US measures, including an Aug. 6 executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on India's purchases of Russian oil, raising the total tariff to 50 per cent. These tariffs take effect 21 days after signing. He cited Trump's role in securing a 5 per cent defense spending agreement among NATO allies in June and a July deal to deliver more weapons to Ukraine. 'We had a great NATO summit under his leadership, committing to 5 per cent defense spending… And then he opened the floodgates three weeks ago of American lethal weapons to be delivered into Ukraine, coordinated by NATO, and, of course, the secondary sanctions,' Rutte said.

Bihar dy CM has 2 voter cards, says oppn; ERO sends him notice

PATNA: Bihar's political slugfest escalated Sunday as the opposition accused deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha of possessing two electoral photo identity cards (EPICs) from separate assembly constituencies with different ages. BJP's Sinha denied wrongdoing, saying he had applied in 2024 to have his name deleted from one list. The dispute flared after the electoral registration officer of Bankipur served Sinha a notice, asking him to respond by Aug 14 to alleged duplication. The notice said his name appears in the draft voter lists of both Bankipur (182) and Lakhisarai (168) assembly constituencies and was registered in both before EC's special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls. Earlier in the day, RJD's Tejashwi Prasad Yadav - himself under fire over alleged possession of dual EPICs - and Congress functionaries held separate press conferences, charging that Sinha's case exposed flaws in SIR. "He owns two different EPICs, but what is serious is that it happened after SIR," Tejashwi told reporters. "Either the entire SIR process is fraudulent or the Bihar deputy CM is a fraud. His name figures on two voter lists, which means he must have signed both enumeration forms. If not, then election commission is involved in fraud." Tejashwi demanded action from Lakhisarai and Patna district administrations, accusing EC of ignoring repeated complaints. State Congress president Rajesh Kumar backed the charge, alleging BJP was "unexpectedly and forcibly creating new voters and removing our voters' names", calling it proof of party MP Rahul Gandhi's earlier claim that EC "conspired with BJP to steal votes". Sinha rejected the allegations and accused Tejashwi of misleading the public. "In April last year, I sent an application for removing my name from Bankipur. I don't know why it was not deleted," he said. "This time again, I called the BLO, submitted a written application, and took a receipt seeking deletion. I have both documents." He insisted he voted only from Lakhisarai. "Tejashwi is simply trying to mislead people by giving wrong facts. Entire Bihar knows he plays the game of tarnishing others' images. He should apologise," Sinha said.

Rajnath Singh to lay foundation stone for Rs 1,800 cr rail coach unit in MP

Bhopal, Aug 10 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the state is set to receive a major boost under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision—a new rail coach manufacturing unit. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will perform the bhoomipujan ceremony today at Dussehra Maidan in Obeidullaganj to mark the start of the project. The event will also be attended by Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar, and Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) Chairman Shantanu Rai. A short film on the BEML project, a 3D walk-through of the proposed plant, and models of new facilities will be showcased during the programme. The plant under the name Brahma Project (BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing) will be built on over 60 hectares in Umariya village of Raisen district, near the Bhopal border, at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The facility is expected to benefit Bhopal, Raisen, Sehore, and Vidisha districts, creating employment for over 5,000 people, both directly and indirectly. Technical students from the region will particularly gain from new job opportunities. Calling it a significant boost to the Make in India initiative, Yadav said the unit will manufacture coaches for Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and metro trains, ushering in a 'new era' for India's rail network. The project will also stimulate industrial growth in nearby areas, including Mandideep. The decision to establish the factory was taken a few months ago during Yadav's visit to the BEML institute in Bengaluru. The Chief Minister emphasized that the unit will fully align with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals by utilizing mostly indigenous technology and materials, reducing foreign dependence and positioning India as a leader in defence manufacturing. 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, a new chapter of industrial development will be scripted,' Yadav said, adding that investors from Madhya Pradesh and across the country are being invited to participate. The project prioritizes environmental sustainability, featuring zero liquid waste, use of solar and renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, and green landscaping. Built as a 'green factory' using recycled and sustainable materials, the plant will initially produce 125–200 coaches per year, with capacity planned to scale up to 1,100 coaches annually within five years. Yadav said that the project will not only generate thousands of jobs but also enhance the state's technological capabilities, making Madhya Pradesh a competitive player in the global high-speed rail and metro market.
