With more power, less weight, rear wheel drive and a limited production run, the new BMW M2 CS proudly, and loudly, continues the 'Competition Sport' tradition that dates back to the late 1960s.
The limited edition Coupe will be available in South Africa from the second quarter of 2026, BMW SA has confirmed, with pricing to be released nearer to the time. But expect to pay a substantial premium over the regular M2's sticker, which falls just north of the R1.5 million mark.
Beneath the bonnet is an upgraded version of BMW's 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged engine, now matching the BMW M3 and M4 with outputs of 390kW at 6,250rpm and 650Nm from 2,650 to 5,730rpm.
Boasting 37kW and 50Nm more than the regular M2, and being an impressive 30kg lighter, the new M2 CS is capable of sprinting from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, making it 0.2 seconds quicker. The top speed is electronically limited to 302km/h.
An M-specific exhaust system with electronically controlled flaps is fitted to ensure an enticing soundtrack, but for those who seek, in BMW's words, a 'racing car sound guaranteed to stir the emotions', a bespoke new M Performance silencer system is available through the M Performance Parts catalogue.
Power goes straight to the back wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox and M Sport differential.
A CFRP 'ducktail' rear spoiler marks out the rear end.

Speaking of chassis mods, the M2 CS sits 8mm lower to the ground than the regular M2 and its springs, dampers and chassis control systems have been specifically tuned for this model, as has the M Servotronic steering system.
Furthermore, its Dynamic Stability Control system, and M Dynamic Mode, have been 'precisely optimised' for race track driving.
An M Compound braking system with red brake callipers, is fitted as standard, while an M Carbon ceramic set-up is optionally available.
The exterior of the M2 CS flaunts numerous carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, including an M Carbon roof and boot lid with eye-catching 'ducktail' spoiler.
The CS is also set apart by a unique rear diffuser, in exposed carbon fibre, and it rolls on a combination of 19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) wheels, fitted as standard with track tyres. Standard sport tyres, as well as 'ultra' track tyres are available as no-cost options.

China's rare earth export curbs hit Europe's car industry

BMW has deployed a magnet-free electric motor for its latest generation of electric cars, but still requires rare earths for smaller motors powering components such as windshield wipers or car window rollers. German carmaker Volkswagen said it is not seeing any shortages now. China's slow pace of easing its critical mineral export controls has become a focus of Trump's criticism of Beijing, which he says has violated the truce reached last month to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Trump has sought to redefine the US' trading relationship with its biggest economic rival by imposing steep tariffs on billions of dollars of imported goods in hopes of narrowing a trade deficit and bringing back lost manufacturing. Trump imposed tariffs of 145% against China only to scale them back after a sell-off in stock, bond and currency markets over the sweeping nature of the levies. China has responded with its own tariffs and is leveraging its dominance in key supply chains to persuade Trump to back down. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to talk this week to try to iron out their differences and the export curbs are expected to be high on the agenda. In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump said Xi is 'VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH', highlighting the fragility of the deal.

Why the Volvo EX90 is the definitive eco-warrior SUV

Safety remains the cornerstone and the Lidar sensor scans the surroundings on the move, picking out cars, lanes and other objects in the EX90's proximity. All that's needed is to keep your hands on the wheel at all times and it will self-throttle, brake and turn into curves proficiently. The system is let down only by municipal ineptness where road markings have faded and deactivates quickly and warns the driver to take the reins. Foibles? Putting all major controls into a single digital hub will not be to everyone's liking, but I'm all for it. The digital key, which the car senses on approach, is too small, though, and easy to lose. Apart from this, the car didn't put a foot wrong for me. The closest rivals to this luxury electric Volvo are the BMW iX 50 and Mercedes-Benz EQS 450. While the BMW looks the part and is priced marginally lower than the Volvo's R2,650,00, it doesn't accommodate seven people. The Mercedes is R82,000 more expensive and can be optioned with seven seats. Having tested all three, it's the Volvo EX90 that's coming home with me for its blend of luxury, style, functionality and Lidar sensors. It's sold as standard with a five-year/100,000km warranty and a three-year/60,000km maintenance plan.

BMW fever hits Muldersdrift with Beemer fest [PICTURES]

Beemer fest 2025drew scores of BMW enthusiasts to Muldersdrift, where a showcase of both classic and modern BMWs was on display. BMW owners and fans had the opportunity to get together and share their passion for the brand. I know BMW purists will tell me that a 'beemer' refers to a bike and not a 'bimmer', which is the car. Organisers of the brand, Carcandy Inc., chose a name that the South African car scene is familiar with, Beemer. There are already hugely successful BMW forums, such as SA Beemer, that have adopted the 'incorrect' name. There was also an opportunity for businesses in the BMW scene to display some of the cars they have worked on. A purpose-built BMW E36 racing car on display at Beemer Fest, 1 June 2025.
