Zomato ends rain fee waiver for Gold members as losses balloon

Time of India15-05-2025

Zomato
has quietly announced that it will now charge a '
rain fee
' from its Gold subscription members. The restaurant aggregator has revamped its
subscription plan
to levy a surcharge even from its premium members for deliveries made during rainy conditions.
Most foodtech and quick commerce platforms put an additional rain fee on their deliveries. Zomato too used to charge Rs 10-35 as a rain fee but waived this amount for its
Gold members
. This benefit will now be rescinded from May 16. The
food delivery
platform also charges Rs 10 as a platform fee for every order.
In an app notification, Zomato said the charges will help it compensate its delivery partners better during rain.

Food delivery
, the company's mature business, continued to grow slowly. CEO Deepinder Goyal attributed the sluggish pace to weak discretionary spends and the rising influence of quick commerce on both operations and demand.

Market share, however, remained stable with hopes of some gains going forward, Goyal said.
Food delivery order volumes were impacted after Zomato delisted around 19,000 restaurants during the March quarter, Goyal said. These restaurants were taken off Zomato for not passing hygiene standards, mimicking established brands, or operating multiple identical menu listings to hog more listing impressions.
In an indication of rising dependence on food delivery for consolidated profits, the company also shuttered its 15-minute food delivery service, Quick, and its homely meals offering, Everyday. CEO Deepinder Goyal, in a letter to the shareholders, said the company saw no visible 'path to profitability' for these services 'without compromising customer experience'.

India-US deal momentum builds: US team holds talks in Delhi on BTA; Goyal says interim pact may be reach soon

The United States and India are intensifying negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, with officials from both sides meeting in New Delhi this week to finalise the first phase of the proposed deal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Commerce and Industry Minister on Thursday said the ongoing discussions are progressing well, and that additional US officials are expected to join the talks on June 6. 'Talks are progressing well. The US team is in India for the talks,' Goyal told reporters in Brescia, Italy, where he is on an official visit to promote trade and investment ties with Italian leadership and industry. According to PTI, the US and India are targeting an interim trade agreement by the end of June. The broader goal, announced jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in February, is to finalise a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by September–October 2025. The deal aims to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 from the current level of $191 billion. India is also pushing for full exemption from the 26% reciprocal tariff currently imposed on domestic goods as part of the ongoing talks. Last month, India's chief negotiator, Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal from the Department of Commerce, held a four-day round of discussions in Washington with his US counterpart. Goyal also travelled to the US capital to provide political impetus to the talks. The US has remained India's largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year in FY 2024–25, with total trade valued at $131.84 billion. The US accounts for about 18% of India's total goods exports, 6.22% of imports, and 10.73% of overall merchandise trade.

Robots could soon replace humans to deliver your Amazon orders

Amazon is developing humanoid robots that could soon replace human delivery workers, with plans to have the machines "spring out" of Rivian electric vans to deliver packages directly to customers' doors. The e-commerce giant has constructed a "humanoid park" testing facility at its San Francisco office, according to a report by The Information. The indoor obstacle course, roughly the size of a coffee shop, features a Rivian delivery van where Amazon will test various humanoid robots in simulated delivery scenarios. The company is developing artificial intelligence software to power these robots while using hardware from external manufacturers. One robot being tested is a $16,000 unit from China-based Unitree, though Amazon plans to evaluate multiple humanoid models during the trials. Once testing concludes at the facility, Amazon intends to conduct real-world "field trips" where robots will attempt actual package deliveries to homes. The robots would travel in the back of Amazon's fleet of over 20,000 Rivian electric vans, potentially speeding up delivery times by allowing simultaneous drops at multiple addresses. This initiative represents a significant expansion of Amazon's existing robotics program. The company already uses autonomous robots extensively in its warehouses and has previously trialed Agility Robotics' humanoid "Digit" robot for logistics tasks. However, deploying humanoid robots for last-mile delivery in uncontrolled outdoor environments presents new technical challenges. The development coincides with Amazon's broader AI push announced Wednesday, which includes agentic AI systems for warehouse operations and generative AI for enhanced delivery mapping. The company is also working on smart eyeglasses for drivers that would provide hands-free navigation and delivery instructions. Amazon's humanoid delivery robot project could eventually impact hundreds of thousands of delivery jobs globally, as the company seeks to fully automate package delivery from warehouse to doorstep. The timeline for real-world deployment remains unclear, with testing still in early phases. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
