Amid festivity, auto & electronics companies carry wait of GST on their shoulders

GST cuts
to be put in place.
Company executives said this could badly dent demand during peak sale periods such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam and Durga Puja festivals this year. The proposed reductions are expected to take effect only by October, at the time of Diwali.
The
GST Council
is slated to meet in the third week of September to finalise new rates, based on recommendations by the group of ministers on rate rationalisation.
The government said its aim is to reduce GST on daily use and aspirational products to enhance affordability, and drive consumption by moving towards two tax slabs from the current four.
The plan is to facilitate this by scrapping the 28 per cent and 12 per cent slabs and shifting products in these two categories to either the 5 per cent or 18 per cent rate. There will also be a 40 per cent rate for luxury and sin products such as tobacco.
The GST Council is the apex decision-making body for the eight-year-old indirect tax. GST 2.0 will be the first major overhaul of the levy.
Consumers are most likely to wait for the new rate implementation, unless they have a pressing need, said B Thiagarajan, managing director at air-conditioner maker
Blue Star
. 'While the GST reduction is a welcome move to spur demand, there is a transition time for the new rate implementation,' he said, noting that dealers are now reluctant to add stocks.
'Ideally, if the new rates would have been implemented from September 1, the early festive period sales would have been extremely good. But now consumers will wait,' said Thiagarajan.
A senior executive at an automaker said that while the industry is not cognisant of the final tax incidence, there is intense speculation, which may force deferment of purchases. 'It will impact footfall at dealers… Several customers who were actively enquiring have postponed their decisions, expecting a rate cut,' he said, requesting anonymity.
The levy reduction is a boon amid sluggish car and
consumer electronics sales
. Consumers have been cutting back on discretionary spending with steps such as income tax rate cut and good monsoons failing to trigger a consumption spurt so far. Passenger vehicle sales growth has turned negative from May.
According to government officials, small cars up to 4 metres length with up to 1200cc engine capacities are likely to be placed in the 18 per cent bracket, compared to the current 28%, and 1-3 per cent compensation cess.
Larger vehicles are likely to be taxed at a special rate of 40%, instead of 43-50 per cent currently. Even two-wheelers are likely to come down to 18%, from 28 per cent plus a cess for some models now. Only taxes on electric vehicles are likely to remain at the current 5%.
Among electronic appliances, products such as ACs, television sets of more than 32-inch screen size, and dishwashers attract 28 per cent GST. Here too, industry experts expect a drop to 18%. Products such as refrigerators, up to 32-inch TVs and washing machines are already in this slab.
Sales will get impacted during the interim period of revised GST rate implementation, said Satish NS, president at
Haier India
. He is, however, hopeful of a pent-up demand surge during Diwali, by when the new rates should be rolled out. 'The benefits of
tax reduction
can be passed on to consumers without any lag as soon as they are notified,' he said. Haier India has started reviewing its business plans for large-screen TVs, expecting a spike in sales.
A senior
auto industry
executive said on condition of anonymity that while the rate cut is a welcome measure, the timing is a challenge. 'The market is already slow. The government has indicated that the new levies will come into force around Diwali,' the executive said. 'Our fear is that customers across segments will defer purchases. Sales are likely to get disrupted for the next two months.'
The festive season, India's biggest consumption period, is falling earlier this year. It usually starts with Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, which is in August this year, followed by Onam, Navratri-Durga Puja—which are all in September, peaking with Diwali in October. This entire period contributes 25-35 per cent of annual sales.
Online-focused TV manufacturer
Super Plastronics
is expecting sales to decline over the next month compared to 4 per cent and 12 per cent growth in the last two months, said Avneet Singh Marwah, its chief executive. The company is licensed to sell brands such as Kodak, Thomson and Blaupunkt.

Bengaluru: Karnataka IT and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge on Wednesday slammed the Centre's decision to impose a blanket ban on online real money gaming (RMG), calling it 'another masterstroke by Modi Sarkar in bad policy making.' Kharge, son of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, said the decision would hit state revenues, jobs and investments. 'India earns Rs 20,000 crore annually from GST and income tax via online RMG. The ban means states lose this revenue stream,' he said in a post on 'X'. The minister noted that over 2,000 gaming startups and more than two lakh jobs in IT, AI and design would be at risk. 'A ban kills India's gaming talent pool and pushes entrepreneurs abroad,' Kharge said, adding that Rs 23,000 crore of foreign direct investment in the last five years could dry up and about Rs 7,000 crore spent annually on ads, data centres, sponsorships and cyber security would vanish overnight. Warning of unintended consequences, the minister said, 'Bans don't stop addiction or suicides. Instead, they push users to unregulated offshore platforms worth Rs 8.2 lakh crore annually where government has no control at all. 'Security risks: Unregulated sites ensure money laundering, terror financing, data theft. Even FATF and Rashtriya Raksha University warn against such risks.' Noting that the Supreme Court is still deciding whether the Centre or states have the power to regulate, Kharge questioned 'Why the rush to ban now?' He said prohibition is not the solution and called for regulating skill-based platforms, enforcing IT Rules, 2021, and whitelisting legitimate operators. 'A well-balanced regulation will ensure jobs, revenue, safer users, national security and global innovation,' he said, cautioning that 'a blanket ban will not only lead to revenue loss, but will give rise to illegal markets that might threaten national security and, of course, there will be a huge innovation setback. Regulation is the way forward.' The proposed promotion and regulation of online gaming bill, cleared by the Union Cabinet on Tuesday, prohibits online money gaming or its ads, and prescribes imprisonment or fine, or both, for those offering or advertising them, as it seeks to differentiate such games from eSports or online social games, according to a source. Explainer: Why govt disbanded the NAA and why GST 2.0 may revive it

The government is considering reviving anti-profiteering provisions for a limited two-year period as part of the transition to a restructured Goods and Services Tax (GST), widely referred to as GST 2.0. The move is aimed at ensuring that businesses pass on tax cuts to consumers, rather than absorbing the gains. The move signals a possible comeback of a regulatory framework that was dissolved in 2022 and integrated with the Competition Commission of India (CCI). What was the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA), and why does India need a dedicated mechanism to police profiteering under GST 2.0? What is anti-profiteering activity? Under the GST law, any reduction in tax rate or gain from input tax credit (ITC) must be passed on to consumers through a commensurate cut in prices. Failure to do so constitutes 'profiteering'. The provision was designed to prevent companies from pocketing benefits from GST rationalisation instead of transferring them to consumers. What was the NAA? When GST was rolled out in July 2017, the government introduced an 'anti-profiteering' clause under Section 171 of the Central GST Act. To implement this, the NAA was set up in November 2017. It worked alongside the Directorate General of Anti-Profiteering (DGAP), which investigated complaints. Initially focused on maximum retail prices, the framework soon expanded to cover successive rate cuts and ITC benefits across sectors such as FMCG, hospitality, and real estate. Why was NAA disbanded? The NAA was dissolved in December 2022, and its functions were transferred to the CCI. The reasoning was administrative efficiency—since CCI already handled issues of unfair market practices, it was thought capable of managing profiteering disputes as well. But structural gaps soon emerged. The merger exposed a fundamental mismatch in the function of the NAA and the CCI, which deals with cartels, monopolies, and abuse of dominance, not tax compliance. By mid-2024, CCI reported that anti-profiteering was 'not its core function' and told the GST Council that tax authorities should oversee such matters. Between December 2022 and June 2024, the CCI closed only 27 cases, while nearly 140 remained pending, with a further 184 disputes stuck in High Courts involving major firms such as Hindustan Unilever, Jubilant Foodworks, Patanjali, Reckitt Benckiser, and Procter & Gamble. GST Appellate Tribunal takes up anti-profiteering cases The GST Council accepted the CCI's reasoning and temporarily shifted oversight to the newly constituted GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) Principal Bench in Delhi from October 2024. A sunset clause set April 1, 2025, as the deadline for filing fresh profiteering complaints, though ongoing cases would continue. India to introduce new GST slabs The government has recently proposed to reduce the current four slabs to just two main ones: 5 per cent Standard Rate for essentials and daily-use goods 18 per cent Merit Rate for most other goods and services The 28 per cent slab will be eliminated, while a new 40 per cent rate will apply only to sin and luxury goods. Does India need a dedicated system to monitor anti-profiteering? As plans to overhaul GST rates are underway, with rationalised and potentially lower slabs expected, the government needs to ensure that consumers directly benefit. Presently, only competitive pressure is expected to push prices down—a mechanism experts argue may be insufficient, as earlier reported by Business Standard. Backlog on cases shows that without a dedicated body, enforcement weakens, and companies may feel less pressure to comply. The NAA or a similar dedicated body may be needed because GST 2.0 involves large rate changes, and profiteering is a tax compliance issue. What's next? The GST Appellate Tribunal continues to hear ongoing cases. The challenge now lies in striking a balance between creating a credible deterrent against profiteering while avoiding excessive regulatory burdens and prolonged litigation for businesses. Ola Electric shares rally 25% in 2 days. Analysts say ₹57 within reach; should you buy?

Ola Electric Mobility shares have staged a sharp rebound this week, rallying 24.6 per cent in just two sessions after a steep slide through most of 2025. The stock jumped as much as 14.5 per cent on Wednesday to ₹51.33 on the BSE, extending Tuesday's 8.8 per cent surge, as investors weighed looming Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms that analysts warn could tilt demand back toward conventional cars against tentative signs of fresh momentum in the beaten-down EV maker. Shares of Ola Electric Mobility have been battered this year, down over 41 per cent in 2025 and having fallen 63 per cent over the past 12 months. On Wednesday, however, about 2,376.75 lakh Ola Electric shares worth ₹1,136.80 crore were traded on the NSE. The rebound came after Ola Electric bucked a broad auto rally on Monday, slipping 0.3 per cent to ₹41.21 even as the Nifty Auto index surged 4.2 per cent on optimism that cuts in India's Goods and Services Tax could stoke demand for cars and two-wheelers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said last week that the government plans to lower GST rates on several goods and services by Diwali. Proposals under discussion include slashing GST on small cars to 18 per cent from 28 per cent , according to Reuters. HSBC Global Research said a cut 'may positively impact auto demand, though OEM-wise impact may vary,' while cautioning it could be negative for EVs if some states respond by raising road taxes. Nomura echoed the concern, noting that 'if the GST cut on ICE happens, it is likely to significantly impact EV adoption… as the price gap between EVs (taxed at 5 per cent ) and ICE (taxed at 28 per cent plus cess) would increase sharply.' The policy uncertainty comes as Ola Electric is already battling weak financials. For the quarter ended June 30, the company posted a consolidated net loss of ₹428 crore, up 23 per cent year-on-year, while revenues halved to ₹828 crore. EBITDA losses widened to ₹237 crore, with margins slipping to -28.6 per cent from -12.5 per cent a year earlier. Technical picture Despite pressures, some analysts see signs of bottom formation. 'Ola Electric has been consolidating near the ₹39 support zone over the past few weeks, with multiple Doji candles signaling price stabilization,' said Laxmikant Shukla, Technical Analyst at YES Securities. He added that a move above the 50-day SMA suggests 'a pullback from current levels,' with a buy range of ₹43-44 and a stop-loss at ₹39. Anuj Gupta, Director at Ya Wealth, noted that 'Ola is in the oversold zone. A recovery is expected, and the risk-reward looks favorable. Strong support lies at ₹39, and the stock has potential to rise. Its lifetime high was ₹157.40.' Mandar Bhojane, Senior Technical & Derivative Analyst at Choice Broking, said the stock 'has formed a falling channel and is now on the verge of a breakout with strong volumes.' He added that sustaining above ₹46 could open the way for targets of ₹52.5 and ₹57.5. Long-term story From a fundamental perspective, some view Tuesday's rebound as evidence that investors are looking past near-term uncertainty. 'The stock's performance underscores the market's focus on operational execution and the company's expansion trajectory rather than short-term policy noise,' said Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at INVasset PMS. Garg cautioned that a GST cut on small cars and two-wheelers could pose 'a near-term challenge' by making ICE vehicles cheaper but argued that Ola's long-term strategy remains intact, pointing to its Gen-4 platform spanning electric cars, rickshaws, and light commercial vehicles. 'The recent intra-day surge of over 10 per cent reflects confidence in the company's expansion plans,' he added, highlighting near-term resistance at ₹55-57 and support at ₹41-42. Investors weigh risk and reward Ola Electric share price continue to trade below long-term averages, with the Relative Strength Index at 48.5 and MACD at -0.6, signaling lingering bearish undertones. Yet analysts note growing participation from both retail and institutional investors. 'The near-term correction has created a lower entry point, and for investors with a medium-to-long-term horizon, the stock offers attractive potential relative to the current risk,' Garg said.
