Before War 2 Vs Coolie, A Look At 5 Epic Box Office Clashes Of All Time
The Independence Day box office clash between the two most anticipated films, Rajinikanth's Coolie and Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer War 2, is buzzing. With advance bookings for both films being underway, the competition has grown even more fierce. While Coolie dominates early bookings, it's still too early to predict who will have the last smile.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Featuring Rajinikanth in the lead role, Coolie boasts a powerhouse cast including Shruti Hassan, Sathyaraj, Nagarjuna Akkineni, and Aamir Khan. On the other hand, Hrithik Roshan is all set to reprise his role as Major Kabir for the last time in the Ayan Mukherji-directed War 2. Alongside Hrithik Roshan, the film stars Jr NTR and Kiara Advani in prominent roles. Both these films will release on August 14.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha vs Lagaan (2001)
These two period films proved that clashes between two Bollywood films do not have to result in losses for one of the two films. While Sunny Deol's Gadar was the bigger box office winner, earning more than Rs 43 crore, Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan made it to the top five nominations for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards for 2001, despite earning Rs 25 crore at the box office.
Don vs Jaan-E-Maan (2006)
Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan's box office clash in 2006 was the most anticipated clash for movie lovers. While Shah Rukh Khan's remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 film earned more than Rs 24 crore at the box office, Salman Khan's romantic drama co-starring Preity Zinta and Akshat Kumar collected only Rs 12 crore.
Dunki vs Salaar (2023)
Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki and Prashanth Neel's Salaar clashed at the box office during Christmas 2023. While fans thought the SRK and Rajkumar Hirani combo would deliver a masterpiece, the audiences were disappointed in the end with the Rs 212.42 crore box office collection. On the other hand, Salaar did an exceptional job at the box office, earning Rs 404 crore.
Saawariya vs Om Shanti Om (2007)
During Diwali 2007, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya marked the debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer retro saga Om Shanti Om introduced Deepika Padukone. While Saawariya managed to collect Rs 24 crore, Om Shanti Om triumphed with nearly Rs 70 crore at the box office.
Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and SRK clashed at the box office again in 2015. Despite facing multiple controversies, Bajirao Mastani, starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, earned Rs 184.2 crore at the box office, while Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale collected Rs 148.72 crore.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 14 (ANI): The much-awaited Rajinikanth starrer 'Coolie' hit theatres on Thursday, and fans across India are celebrating the release like a festival. In Chennai's Egmore, huge crowds gathered outside theatres for the first-day, first-show. The area was filled with posters, banners, and giant cutouts of the superstar. Fans in Madurai danced to drumbeats, showered flower petals, and celebrated with joy outside cinemas to watch the film. In Tiruchirappalli, women were seen carrying flowers while men danced to drumbeats to celebrate the release of 'Thalaiva's' much-awaited film. The excitement was not just limited to Tamil Nadu. In Mumbai, similar scenes were seen as fans gathered outside theatres wearing Coolie-themed t-shirts, dancing, and cheering for the film. Children also joined in the celebrations. Fans in Hyderabad thronged outside a theatre on Thursday morning, placed posters of their favourites, Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna. The film has officially received an A (Adults Only) certificate from the censor board. This marks the superstar's first A-rated film in many years, hinting that the film will be packed with intense and unfiltered action. One major highlight of the much-awaited film is the reunion of Thalaiva and actor Aamir Khan after nearly three decades. The two last worked together in the 1995 film Aatank Hi Aatank. In Coolie, Aamir Khan will be seen as Dahaa. A poster showcasing Aamir's rugged new look was recently shared by the makers. Coolie is produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. ‘Coolie' review: Rajinikanth survives Lokesh Kanagaraj's overloaded and tacky ‘Coolie'
Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie stars the ageless, tireless and boundless Rajinikanth as a former dock union leader with a messiah complex. Coolie, released in Tamil, Hindi and other languages, revolves around the conflict between Deva (Rajinikanth), the smuggler Simon (Nagarjuna) and Simon's savage enforcer Dayal (Soubin Shahir). Deva is minding his own business, being a killjoy at the chummery he runs by forcing the residents to abjure liquor. But Deva is no Gandhian, as is revealed when his friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) is killed and Rajasekhar's daughter Preethi (Shruti Haasan) needs protection. Rajsekhar has invented a 'mobile cremator', an electric chair that instantly does the work, and is very useful to Dayal. Since he is apparently the only person on the planet who can operate the gewgaw, his death troubles Dayal a great deal. Deva calls Rajasekhar his best friend but Deva has somehow been kept out of this ash-strewn phase. After Rajasekhar's death, Deva returns to his brutal ways. Written by Kanagaraj and Chandra Anbhazhagan, the 168-minute film has an overdose of gory, nails-driven-into-flesh brand of violence to compensate for its cliche-ridden, contrived plot. Kanagaraj hopes that the brain that isn't yet jaded by visuals of gruesome torture won't start thinking about the holes in the plotting. For safety, Rajinikanth is surrounded by actors who represent each of the country's major film industries. Apart from Nagarjuna (Telugu) and Shahir (Malayalam), Bollywood's Aamir Khan plays Dahaa, a bulked-up gangster. Kannada star Upendra plays Kaleesha, Deva's old buddy. One of the film's themes is that people aren't who they claim to be. This barely works out for Deva, since Rajinikanth has played this kind of mystery man before, but it does for a couple hiding in plain sight. The twist concerning Dayal and the character played by Rachita Ram is the most novel idea in the film. Kanagaraj does badly by the female characters yet again, with Preethi constantly in danger of being raped and not too bright either. The attention is firmly on Rajinikanth, playing the same-old hero with flexible morals with unbridled enthusiasm. Shahir is the film's scene-stealer, memorably capturing Dayal's horridness and dancing skills. Play
