Unemployed man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting 10-year-old boy in Kota Baru
KOTA BARU, June 22 — An unemployed man pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy on June 12.
Che Asmizan Che Jaafar, 34, is charged with committing the offence in an empty container near the Lembah Sireh Bus Station here at 8am.
The charge is framed under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which provides for a prison sentence not exceeding 20 years and whipping, if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.
Judge Zulkifli Abllah set July 21 for mention and appointment of a lawyer.— Bernama

Police detain Proton X50 driver for using motorcycle lane on Penang bridge
NIBONG TEBAL, June 22 — Police have detained an elderly woman for driving a car in the motorcycle lane on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS) here yesterday. Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) Police Chief Supt Jay January Siowou said preliminary police investigations found that the incident occurred at Kilometre 8.6 of JSAHMS from Batu Kawan heading towards Batu Maung, at around 1.30pm. 'Acting on information, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS District Police Headquarters (IPD) managed to identify the 70-year-old female driver and brought her to the SPS IPD for further action. 'The police have also opened an investigation paper for driving in a prohibited lane, and further investigation is underway,' he said in a statement today. Members of the public with additional information on the incident are urged to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS IPD at 04-5858222 to assist with the investigation. Earlier, a six-second video went viral on social media showing the woman driving a Proton X50 in the motorcycle lane on the bridge. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 – The police have today refuted a report by Malay daily Sinar Harian linking newly appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Mohd Ismail to a political party. In a statement, the police criticised the media outlet for failing to verify the information before publication, calling the report irresponsible and damaging to the reputation of both the police force and the individual concerned. 'Journalistic ethics demand that all published reports undergo fact-checking, cross-verification, and uphold integrity in reporting,' the police force's secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Abdullah said. The statement emphasised that the police force operates on the principles of neutrality, integrity, and professionalism. They reiterated that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of, or held any position in, any political party as alleged in the article. 'The statement is false, misleading, and creates a negative perception that casts doubt on the credibility of the national security force,' they said. Kamaruzaman added that the police would not tolerate any attempts to undermine public trust in its officers or operations. Yesterday, PKR has clarified that Mohd Khalid has never been a member of PKR, let alone held any position within the party. PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said that the circulation of an inaccurate profile linking the IGP to a political party could undermine his image and credibility. She added that it could also fuel negative perceptions of PKR as the ruling party if members of the public believe that Mohd Khalid's appointment was politically motivated. Mohd Khalid — who succeeded Tan Sri Razarudin Husein — began his policing career in 1987 and has served in various key roles including deputy director of Special Branch, the police intelligence division, and as security liaison officer in London. Prior to his new appointment, the 60-year-old served as director of the Special Branch and retired on April 8 but was reappointed on a contract basis from that date until now.

KL police: Five released after questioning over Brickfields murder, Cheras shooting culprits yet to be found
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 – Police have reportedly detained five individuals to assist investigations into the June 13 shooting outside a restaurant in Brickfields that left one man dead and two others injured. Kuala Lumpur Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the suspects were arrested on June 16 at various locations around the city in connection with the incident. 'However, they have all been released on bail after their statements were recorded,' Sinar Harian quoted him saying. Last week, a man died while two of his friends were injured after being shot at a restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields. Brickfields district police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said in the incident at about 10.50 pm, the three local men aged between 30 and 50 were eating with several friends before being approached by two men on a motorcycle who fired several shots at them. However, Mohamed Usuf added that no arrests have been made in connection with a separate shooting case in Cheras, with investigations still underway to identify the culprits. According to him, police have recorded statements from 18 witnesses in the Brickfields case and from 20 individuals linked to the Cheras incident. 'We are actively continuing investigations to track down the suspects involved,' he said. Earlier this week, two men were gunned down outside a shopping mall along Jalan Loke Yew in Cheras shortly after midnight. The victims were walking towards their parked car when several individuals rushed at them and fired multiple shots, local media reported.
