With the Green Bay Packers releasing two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander earlier this week, plenty of NFL teams may have raised an eyebrow, especially those with glaring needs in the secondary.
Naturally, the Los Angeles Rams were among the teams that the football world would expect to be interested in. After all, the Rams have question marks at cornerback with an unproven group despite having reliable veterans in Ahkello Witherspoon, Darious Williams, and Cobie Durant. They have lacked a true No. 1 option since Jalen Ramsey.
Alexander, even after a pair of injury-riddled seasons in 2023 and 2024, is still just 28 years old and boasts the kind of lockdown potential that doesn't often hit the open market.
However, to Rams head coach Sean McVay, the two time All-Pro doesn't appear to be in the teams future plans.
"Nothing but respect for the player,' McVay said. 'But I don't know if that's a direction we would go.'
It's not hard to understand why the connection was made. Alexander, when healthy, is one of the league's premier man-cover corners. He has the skill set to match up with top receivers — something the Rams lacked during stretches of last season. But injuries and reported friction in Green Bay may be giving front offices pause.
From a roster standpoint, the Rams appear to be betting on development. The front office has prioritized youth and flexibility, and while general manager Les Snead isn't afraid of a splashy move, the team has been more calculated with veteran additions in recent years.
Still, in a division that features passing attacks led by Brock Purdy and Kyler Murray, with Lamar Jackson and C.J. Stroud on schedule, and notable pass catchers like A.J. Brown and Mike Evans, the Rams' cornerback room will have plenty of matchups to face this season.
