Chiefs star Rashee Rice gets jail sentence for fleeing Dallas car crash that left several people injured
Rice was estimated to be speeding at 119mph before the collision, which resulted in several injuries for other motorists and passengers.
The jail term can be served at any time over the next five years, according to ESPN, which was the first outlet to report the news.
In a related lawsuit, Rice has agreed to pay $1million to a plaintiff who sued him over the 2024 crash, according to court documents obtained by Daily Mail. Rice is also being forced to pay $75,000 in pre-judgement interest and $12,000 in plaintiff attorney fees.
'Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas,' Rice said in a statement released by his attorney, Royce West. 'There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.
'I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.'
The NFL is expected to discipline Rice, who could receive a multi-game suspension after he was seen attempting to run away from the multi-vehicle crash last year. Rice would not be paid for any games he missed during a potential ban.
Dashcam footage of the accident shows when the Super Bowl winner crashed in 2024
Rice was renting the Lamborghini sport utility vehicle authorities said was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway in May of 2024.
The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without checking on the drivers and passengers in the other four cars involved in the collision.
A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000.
Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.
After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, West said at the time that Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.'
Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills.
The 25-year-old has $3.5 million in career earnings and is slated to make $1.3 million in 2025. However, that salary will likely suffer if he misses any games due to suspension.
Already thin at receiver, the Chiefs stood by Rice in 2024 in spite of the arrest.
Ultimately Rice's season was ended in Week 4 when he tore his ACL by colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Rice is expected to be ready for training camp when it opens on July 21 at Missouri Western State University.
He has not addressed the ruling publicly, but did post a photo of himself on Instagram with the caption: 'Gods (sic) plan.'

Shelter worker is mauled to death by two dogs rescued from abuse and fighting ring
A shelter worker was mauled to death by two rescue animals saved from a dog-fighting ring. Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, died this month at Second Chance Animal Alliance in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, during the attack, according to WREG. 'A dog was already in a pen and he was trying to put another dog in there and the other dog tried to run out, and he tried to hold him off with his foot and that dog grabbed his leg, pulled him down. And then the other dog jumped in with him. One of them was a pit, and the other was a pit mixed breed, and they killed him. They got it all on tape down there,' friend Dudley Woods told the outlet. The two dogs that attacked were at the shelter after being taken in a court-ordered seizure in an investigation into abuse and dog fighting, Yalobusha County Sheriff Jermain Gooch told the North Mississippi Herald. Police who responded to the scene had to shoot one dog dead to reach Phillips. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other dog was euthanized. Phillips had worked at the shelter for two years, according to WREG. 'His quiet and caring demeanor helped him foster a love for animals and he remarked that he often felt more comfortable around his pets than around people, perhaps recalling the time he spent with Eon, his beloved childhood dog,' his obituary read. He had also worked at a bakery and a Piggy Wiggly in recent years, according to the obituary. Phillips loved watching social media videos - including seeing people's reactions to old TV shows and movies when being shown them for the first time. The 57-year-old was a regular attendee at Sylva Rena Baptist Church, his obituary stated. 'Quiet, caring, and unassuming, Cliff never met a stranger. He loved people. Cliff enjoyed meeting people and swapping stories about their past experiences and sharing details of his own,' the obituary stated. 'He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.' It's unclear what led the dogs to launch into their attack. The shelter released a statement in the wake of Phillips' death. 'It has been one week since the death at the shelter of our friend and employee Cliff Phillips,' it read. 'Alongside his family and many friends, we are devastated by this loss. While we cannot address every question or rumor we have seen over this past week, we have cooperated with local officials. 'Please know that we take the safety and security of our volunteers and employees seriously. We are proud of the work we do in our community and will remain vigilant as we continue to do it.' The victim's older brother, Charles, told WREG that his brother loved animals but he wondered if more could have been done. 'I went out and picked his vehicle up and his last paycheck, but she said, 'I'm sorry I have no words for it,' but she said, 'I'm so sorry for your loss and everything,'' Phillips told the station. 'They've always done good. They've took a lot of strays and puppies and stuff from around here and they've always done good with that.'

Ghislaine Maxwell's could dodge congressional subpoena for her testimony in Epstein investigation, lawyer says
Jeffrey Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell is unsure whether she will comply with a recent congressional subpoena to testify about his abuse of girls and whether others were involved, amid continued pressure for the government to disclose more about the case. 'We have to make a decision about whether she will do that or not,' her attorney David Oscar Markus told Politico. 'That's been scheduled for the week of August 11th and we haven't gotten back to them on whether we'll do that.' Maxwell could invoke the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to avoid testifying, while Congress could offer the former British socialite immunity. Maxwell is currently in a Florida federal prison serving a 20-year sentence for conspiring with Epstein to sexually abuse minors, which she has sought to overturn in the Supreme Court. Her lawyer said, Maxwell is hoping Donald Trump pardons her. A bipartisan group on the House Oversight Committee voted Tuesday to subpoena Maxwell amid renewed interest into the Epstein scandal. Maxwell sat with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in recent days for an in-depth interview in Florida. The interview featured Maxwell answering questions about ' 100 different people,' her lawyer said. DOJ officials spoke to her as fallout from the president's handling of releasing information in the Epstein case continues to mount. Democrats have criticized Maxwell's conversations with the DOJ, arguing they are a conflict of interest given the political pressure the Trump administration is facing to disclose more about the Epstein case and Trump's personal relationship with the disgraced investor. 'Under no circumstances should anyone from Trump's DOJ be allowed to privately interview Ghislaine Maxwell,' Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X of the interview. 'The conflict of interest is glaring. It stinks of high corruption.' The battle over Epstein info has played out beyond just Congress, which House Speaker Mike Johnson broke early for an August recess as legislators pressured the administration to disclose the full Epstein files. Last week, President Trump filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal 's parent companies News Corp and Dow Jones, after the paper reported that Trump sent a 'bawdy' birthday letter to Epstein. The president has denied the letter is valid. The Epstein saga has created a rare wedge between Trump and members of his base and party. Trump and his allies campaigned on releasing more information about Epstein, and initially, the White House made steps toward fulfilling that promise, releasing what it called ' Phase 1 ' of the Epstein files to a group of conservative commentators and online personalities in February. However, most of it was redacted or already disclosed. Earlier this month, the Department of Justice announced there was no 'Epstein client list' despite speculation, and that no more disclosures would be made about the case, infuriating parts of the MAGA base. The president has chastised his own supporters for their intrigue over Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial, calling the scandal a Democrat-led 'scam' and 'con job.' The president, who has previously denied being mentioned in the Epstein files, was in fact told by the Justice Department he was one of numerous high-profile figures mentioned in the course of investigations into Epstein, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

Travis Kelce's friend predicts stunning Chiefs trade that will see him ditch NFL retirement plans
Travis Kelce 's sports analyst friend Nick Wright has theorized that there could be one player to convince the Kansas City Chiefs star to play one more season in the NFL. While the tight end postponed his retirement plans this offseason to return to the NFL for the 2025 season, he hasn't yet been prepared to commit to suiting up for the 2026 season or beyond. However, Wright, who previously claimed he barely speaks to his pal Kelce since he began dating Taylor Swift, hinted this week that the footballer's future could hinge on a potential stunning trade. The sports podcaster claimed that controversial wide receiver Tyreek Hill could make a return to Kansas City next year, reuniting with Kelce and Patrick Mahomes for one last rodeo. 'I told you guys a year ago that I'm very excited for Tyreek Hill wearing a Chiefs uniform in 2026,' Wright said on his show, 'What's Wright? With Nick Wright'. 'Because I think that's going to happen. It's not going to happen this year but that I think is going to happen. 'And maybe that's enough to get Kelce to come back for one more year. A little final Tyreek-Kelce ride off into the sunset together.' Hill's current $90million contract with the Miami Dolphins runs through the 2026 season. However, his future with the Dolphins looked rocky throughout the offseason. The wide receiver's relationship with the Dolphins has been left in contentious shape after he repeatedly hinted at a move out of Miami with thinly-veiled jibes at the team and his teammates. And while Hill looks set to suit up for the Dolphins for at least the upcoming season, whether he will stay in the 305 beyond 2025 could be uncertain. Before signing with the Dolphins, Hill played six seasons in Kansas City after being drafted by the Chiefs in 2016. After sharing the field with Kelce for the first six seasons of his NFL career, the five-time First-Team All-Pro player previously insisted that the Kelce was the best tight end he played with. Kelce nearly retired after the Chiefs were destroyed by the Philadelphia Eagles in February's Super Bowl in New Orleans. The emphatic 40-22 scoreline actually flattered the Chiefs and Kelce's struggles to get open encapsulated a season where he failed to find his best form. He finished the game with four catches for 39 yards. The wide receiver spent the first six seasons of his career with Kelce and the Chiefs Following the defeat, Kelce was non-committal about his future, saying on his subsequent New Heights podcast he would 'take some time to figure it out.' But last month, while he was not prepared to give a definite answer on his NFL future beyond the upcoming season, he insisted that he was locked in for the looming campaign. 'I got one year on this contract, I know that,' the 35-year-old said Wednesday at the second of three voluntary practices. 'And we'll try to figure out something for next year,' Kelce said after the second day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp, which was moved partially indoors because of lightning in the area. 'The Chiefs organization knows how much I love them. I can't see myself playing anywhere else,' Kelce continued. 'We'll deal with [2026] down the road, when the time is right. But right now, I'm focused on winning a championship this year.' Hill, meanwhile, cast his own NFL future into doubt after the end of the 2024 season when he appeared to hint at a move out of Miami. The wideout appeared to take himself out the team's final game of the 2024 season against the New York Jets , with head coach Mike McDaniel then denying Hill's claim that he was hurt and couldn't play. Then, speaking with reporters after the game, Hill was visibly unhappy at missing the postseason. 'This is my first time I haven't been in the playoffs, man,' Hill said. 'So I just got to do what's best for me and my family. 'I'm opening the door. I'm out bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta do what's best for my career because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there.' Yet, while the 31-year-old, who is also in the midst of a bitter divorce from wife Keeta Vaccaro , has remained in South Florida as the Dolphins returned to training camp this week, it doesn't necessarily mean all is forgiven. 'When you say something like that you don't just come back with "My bad." You gotta work that relationship up. He is working on himself,' Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa told reporters Wednesday when asked about Hill's fiery comments. In addition to his cryptic Week 18 message, Hill courted further controversy during the offseason when he appeared to take a swipe at Tagovailoa himself. The receiver was asked by a fan on social media to rank the best quarterbacks in the league and he passed over his own signal caller, who missed parts of the 2024 season after suffering another concussion. Hill's picks were Ravens star Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen of the Bills, Chiefs icon Patrick Mahomes , Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield and Bengals signal caller Joe Burrow.
