Dentist charged with poisoning wife went through 'drastic' life change months before murder, trial hears

Daily Mail19-07-2025
The Colorado dentist accused of fatally poisoning his wife was told he'd need to take a 'drastic' pay cut in the months before her murder, jurors heard on Friday.
Dr Ryan Redfearn, a dental school friend of defendant James Craig, told the court how in 2022 he'd invited the father of six to join Fit to Smile, the umbrella dental services group Redfearn runs with his brother.
Craig would have the opportunity to become a partner while the operation 'would provide management services to run his practice,' Redfearn testified at Arapahoe County District Court.
After making the invitation, Redfearn testified that he learned Craig had in recent years declared bankruptcy, blaming it on coronavirus troubles.
The arrangement with Fit to Smile meant the operation would pay $18,000 a month to service Craig's debts, Redfearn told the court.
By January 2023, however, Redfearn testified that the partnership was 'not going well.'
After a Monday night meeting with other partners, Redfearn drove to Craig's house, told him he'd need to cancel upcoming trips, work more days and reduce his salary from a 35 per cent to 28 per cent cut.
During the conversation, in admissions that 'came out of nowhere,' Redfearn said Craig broke down and told him 'that his marriage was in a bad place.
'He didn't elaborate, and I didn't feel the need to ask; it was more of just, things weren't good between him and Angie,' Redfearn testified.
'He cried.'
Redfearn added that Craig's practice had numerous problems, including 'excessive spending.'
Craig took the pay cut portion of the conversation better than he expected, Redfearn testified.
Two months later, however, Angela fell ill.
Redfearn was pulling into the hospital complex on March 15, the day she was declared brain dead, when he was told by employees that Craig had received a delivery of potassium cyanide to the office earlier that week.
Testifying that he was 'shocked,' Redfearn told jurors he joined Craig in the ICU waiting room and looked up symptoms of potassium cyanide poisoning on his phone.
He pulled aside a nurse at the hospital to share his concerns, Redfearn testified.
'I even think I said to him ... "I'm not accusing anyone of anything, I don't know what's going on here, but I just received some information that she might have been poisoned,"' Redfearn told the court.
Craig was arrested the day after his wife's March 18, 2023 death. Family friend and business associate Dr Ryan Redfearn testified on Friday that Craig's practice had multiple problems, including 'excessive spending' - with the dentist told to cancel trips and work more days
He said he didn't know at the time 'if there was any way to save her' or if a 'reversal agent' existed but he knew that 'time was of the essence, probably.'
Redfearn was later brought to speak to a forensic nurse, he said, and after that left the hospital with his wife - but told Angela's brother and the family's bishop, who'd also been in the waiting room, about his concerns.
He 'felt it was important to tell somebody, and we went to our car,' Redfearn testified.
That's when Craig called.
'He said that he'd heard some disturbing news about me talking to somebody at the hospital, and I acknowledged that I had talked to a nurse,' Redfearn testified.
Redfearn then confronted Craig about the package delivery, he said.
'I said, "Jim, what was in the package?" And he ... kind of blew it off, [like] it's not that big of a deal,' Redfearn testified.
Upon further pressing, Redfearn told the court, Craig 'said it was a ring for Angie to surprise her.
"And I said, "It wasn't a ring, Jim" - and he said, "Well, it wasn't opened." And I said, "It was."
'And I said, "Why do you need potassium cyanide?"
'His first response was: "Ryan, what have you done?" Redfearn said. 'He said that a couple of times, and I continued to ask him: "Why do you need potassium cyanide? That is not something that we need in dentistry or that we practice with."'
Craig told him 'it was a game of chicken with Angie.'
'What do you mean by that?' Redfearn testified he asked Craig.
'And he said that she was suicidal and he bought it for her because she couldn't buy it herself, that you needed special credentials.'
The following day, Redfearn testified, Craig sent a 'pretty lengthy text.'
Redfearn told the court he 'basically didn't want me to talk to anybody about what we talked about' and requested that Redfearn ask other employees not to speak with investigators, either.
Angela had been declared brain dead on March 15, the day Redfearn alerted nurses. She was taken off life support on March 18, and Craig was arrested the following day.
The trial continues on Monday.

Man due in court charged with murder after teenage boy dies in crash

A 59-year-old man is due in court charged with the murder of a teenage boy who died in a crash. Devon Simmonds-Caines, 15, died in the collision between a car and an electric bike in Middleton, Greater Manchester, just before midday on July 22. Terrence King, of Middleton, has been charged with murder and is due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday. The force said another 15-year-old boy who had been arrested on suspicion of theft in relation to the same incident was bailed pending further inquiries. In a statement, Devon's family said that he was an 'outgoing, bubbly person' who 'only wanted the best for everyone around him'. They added: 'This has shocked the whole family. It was a tragic incident that should never have happened that we don't want to tarnish Devon's legacy.' Chief Inspector Jennifer Partington, from Greater Manchester Police's Rochdale district, said online footage claimed to show events before the incident is not currently linked to the investigation. She urged the public not to share it or speculate.

‘Let them destroy each other': Democrats planning Epstein-focused town halls in GOP districts

Democrats are once again planning a blitz of town hall meetings in Republican-led communities, though this time they are armed with a new and polarizing topic: Jeffrey Epstein. The issue of the so-called 'Epstein files' — including the details of high-profile people associated with the disgraced financier and sex offender — continues to divide the GOP, with some calling for further transparency and others, including the president himself, urging people to move on. 'Let them destroy each other. If we have to throw a log on the fire, we'll do it,' one House Democratic aide told The Hill. Further fuel for such fires followed a report from The Wall Street Journal that revealed the alleged existence of a 'bawdy' 50th birthday card from Trump to Epstein. The president has denied the validity of the letter and has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch, WSJ 's parent company Dow Jones and the two journalists whose bylines appear on the story. During the town halls, Democrats will reportedly attempt to marry the Epstein fallout with their previous attack lines, including broken promises by Trump and the GOP to lower costs for working families. Tax cuts and an apparent refusal to share information of those allegedly associated with Epstein demonstrate the GOP's protections for the super wealthy, Democratic officials argue. 'Everything that House Republicans have done, everything this administration has done since Donald Trump took office, is in defense of the elites,' Democratic whip Katherine Clark told The Hill. The outlet points to scheduled visits to Republican towns by Democrats in coming weeks. On July 31, Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan is scheduled to speak in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin — the hometown of his GOP counterpart Derrick Van Orden. Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost has also planned a series of meetings, including a July 26 town hall in Dayton, Ohio, with Senator Chris Murphy, and another event with Senator Elizabeth Warren in Nebraska at the end of August. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who launched a series of 'fighting oligarchy' rallies with Senator Bernie Sanders earlier this year, is also reportedly eyeing additional travel to Republican hotbeds while Congress is on its summer recess. The plans appear to already be rattling some Republicans. 'Democrats are still pretty determined to hijack our town halls and try to prevent us from having this conversation with our constituents, so I would encourage them to use other means,' National Republican Congressional Committee chair Richard Hudson told The Hill. Meanwhile, the Epstein saga shows no signs of slowing down after the financier's ex-girlfriend, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche twice last week. During the in-depth interviews Maxwell answered questions about '100 different people,' her lawyer said. According to The New York Times, Maxwell has made it clear that in exchange for information she wants a reduction of her 20-year sentence or a pardon. When asked by reporters about a potential pardon for her, Trump replied: 'I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I haven't thought about.'

Family pay tribute to boy, 15, who died in collision between car and e-bike - as man, 59, is charged with murder

Family members have paid tribute to a boy, 15, who died in a collision between a car and e-bike - as a man, 59, is charged with murder. Devon Simmonds-Caines tragically lost his life in the electric bike crash in the town of Middleton, Greater Manchester, just before midday on Tuesday, July 22. Terrence King, of Castlerigg Drive, Middleton, has been charged with murder and is due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday. Another boy, 15, arrested on suspicion of theft relating to the same incident - which took place on the Langley estate's Rowrah Crescent - has been bailed pending further inquiries. Devon's family has now spoken out on their heartbreaking loss, calling the boy an 'outgoing, bubbly person' who 'only wanted the best for everyone around him'. Tributes have been laid at the nearby Lakeland Court Shopping Precinct, including flowers, candles, balloons, stuffed toys, personal mementos, photos and 'RIP Devon' graffiti. Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police are appealing for information - and have warned of footage circulating online, claiming to show events before the crash. The clip is not currently linked to their investigation - and officers have urged the public not to share it or speculate, as the case is active and Devon's family grieving. The family, paying tribute to their beloved Devon, said he 'always kept himself motivated even when he didn't want to be'. They continued: 'Devon loved everyone that loved him and showed respect to everyone that respected him. 'He wasn't afraid to speak his mind and only wanted the best for everyone around him. 'When he would love, he would love really hard. He wasn't a show off kid and kept himself to himself. 'We as a family are grateful for the tributes being made to Devon and would like to thank the local communities for their support; from both those who knew Devon and those who didn't. 'We want peace and to remember Devon calmly, surrounded by his loved ones. 'This has shocked the whole family. It was a tragic incident that should never have happened that we don't want to tarnish Devon's legacy.' Countless messages have been left at the site of floral tributes to Devon, with one reading: 'Rest in paradise Devon.' Another wrote: 'RIP Dev. Always making everyone smile. You will be forever missed.' Someone else in the community said: 'Forever 15 Dev. The biggest soul. Shine bright as always.' Graffitied messages cover nearby walls and pavements, with a large artwork reading 'RIP Devon' accompanied by angel wings, as well as, 'Rest easy Dee'. Posts to social media platform TikTok show fireworks being let off in the community in the wake of his tragic passing. Specialist officers are supporting the family while the police investigation continues and are on extra patrols in the area to provide reassurance to the community. Chief Inspector Jennifer Partington, of Greater Manchester Police's Rochdale district, said on Saturday: 'The investigation into the death of Devon is continuing, with multiple officers working through all the relevant evidence in the case. 'We are aware of footage circulating online alleging to show immediate precursory events leading to the incident, and which we are not considering to be connected to the investigation at this stage. 'We would like to remind people that this is an active case and there is a grieving family, and would ask the community to not share footage or speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.' Anyone with information that could assist the police's enquiries is asked to submit it via the force's major incident online portal. They can alternatively contact the investigation team on 0161 856 1995, quoting log number 1364 of 22/07/2025. Calling 101 or using Greater Manchester Police's live chat are also available options. The independent charity Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
