Albert Luque Sparks Controversy for Derogatory Remarks on Diaz, African Football

Morocco World09-03-2025
Rabat – Retired Spanish football player Albert Luque recently sparked a controversy for his derogatory remarks against Morocco and African football.
Luque made his negative claims in a recent interview with Cadena SER radio program El Larguero.
Belittling Africa's power
The comments belittled the quality and development of football in Africa, ignoring the continent's contribution to the global football scene. Talented African athletes regularly play for top clubs in prestigious competitions like La Liga, the Champions League and other outstanding leagues, with many other clubs from across Europe embracing African players to strengthen their squads.
In the interview, he specifically commented on Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz' decision to represent Morocco over Spain.
'Did it hurt him? I think it hurt him the most not to lift the European Championship. It is not the same to play with Italy as with Kenya,' he claimed.
His remarks come amid celebrations for Diaz' outstanding performances with Real Madrid. International media has been commending the Atlas Lion's play with the Los Blancos, contributing to the club's triumphs across La Liga games.
In denial, Luque also went on to ignore recent remarks made by international football giants, commending Diaz' appearances with Real Madrid as well as his contributions to Morocco's AFCON qualifier games, in which he scored six goals.
Claims on Yamal's choice
Turning the conversation to other players of Moroccan origin, Luque also suggested he had a conversation with the father of FC Barcelona player Lamine Yamal.
He claimed that the football player's father said that Lamine Yamal faced threats for his choice to represent Spain over Morocco. 'And when we spoke to [Lamine Yamal] him he told me: 'I want to be European champion, they are pressuring me from all sides but I want to play with Spain'. This was before he debuted,' Luque said.
'The father was more complicated. He told me that in Morocco they were going to kill him. He told me some things that it is better not to talk about. His mother is the person Lamine has to lean on the most. She asked me if I wanted him to be with Spain and I lied to her, I told her that it was because he was very prepared and not because of [the threat from] Morocco,' he further claimed.
Morocco has been subject to similar rumors from Spanish media as there has been a rise in football players choosing to represent the national team over Spain and other countries, which has struck a nerve among many.
When Morocco approached Lamine to convince him to join the Atlas Lions, Spanish media alleged that the North African country put financial pressure on the FC Barcelona star.
In October 2023, President of Morocco's Football Federation (FRMF) addressed the controversy and rumors, describing them as poor and unfounded.
'I challenge any Moroccan player to confirm that we exerted pressure or engaged in bargaining with them in one way or another. I reflect the opposite and say that it is an honor for any player to wear the national jersey,' Lekjaa said in an interview with Al Sharq.
Spanish outlet AS also contributed to spreading the claims that Morocco was exerting pressure on Yamal to choose Morocco over Spain.
'The pressure from Morocco on the player has not stopped, and the North African Federation even presented him with a financial offer, which the footballer declined, in order to persuade him to play under Regragui, before the Spanish youth teams' coordinator visited him in Barcelona,' AS claimed.
A troubled past of his own
In addition to his career on the field, Albert Luque served as Spain's former men's national team director but was sacked in 2024 as part of the fallout from a scandal in which former president Luis Rubiale unconsensually kissed Spanish footballer Jenifer Hermoso.
Luque was suspended on the grounds of being accused of coercion due to his involvement in the corruption investigation.
Reports in 2023 revealed alleged WhatsApp messages that Luque sent to a close friend of Hermoso during the fallout.
'She deserves nothing due to her baseness and her lack of empathy and humanity with Rubiales,' the messages reportedly read . Tags: African footballBrahim Diazlamine yamal

CAF Denounces Security Breaches During Kenya-Morocco CHAN 2024 Match

Marrakech – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed serious concerns about security failures at Kasarani Stadium during Kenya's matches in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), particularly following incidents that occurred during the Kenya-Morocco fixture on Sunday. In an official letter addressed to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Kenya, CAF condemned the persistent security breaches observed during matches involving the Kenyan national team. The continental governing body specifically referenced serious incidents that took place during the Kenya-Morocco match played on Sunday. Morocco began their quest for a third CHAN title with a solid 2-0 victory over Angola in the Group A opener at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on August 3. However, their momentum was halted by the defeat to Kenya a week later. Among the reported incidents were a broken access door, spectators entering without tickets, attendance exceeding the stadium's regulatory capacity of 48,000, and unauthorized entry into areas reserved for media. CAF has referred these security failures to the appropriate authorities for investigation and appropriate measures. The organization has also initiated discussions with the LOC and the Kenyan government to ensure strict compliance with CAF regulations, particularly those related to security protocols. The match, which Kenya won 1-0, took place in a tense atmosphere, raising questions about security management throughout the competition. Kasarani Stadium, where these events occurred, is scheduled to host the tournament final on August 30 in a competition co-organized by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On the sporting front, Morocco suffered its first defeat in the tournament against host nation Kenya. The Atlas Lions now find themselves obligated to win their next two matches to qualify for the second round, starting with their upcoming fixture against Zambia on Thursday. Despite entering the tournament as favorites, coach Tarik Sektioui's team struggled to convert their technical superiority into goals. After a promising start in the first fifteen minutes, Morocco's momentum was disrupted when striker Ayoub Mouloua sustained an injury that forced his substitution. Kenya's Rayan Ogam capitalized on a defensive lapse to score with a powerful, well-placed shot in the 42nd minute, giving the home side the advantage. Kenya played most of the second half with ten men following Christine Erambo's logical expulsion for a bad foul just before halftime. Despite the numerical advantage and substitutions that reinvigorated their attack, Morocco failed to equalize. Saber Bougrine and Youssef Mehri provided fresh energy, but the Atlas Lions lacked precision in the final third. The Moroccan team will need to quickly regroup to avoid an early exit from the competition. Real Madrid Takes Fight Over Barcelona-Villarreal US Game to FIFA

La Liga's plan to stage the December match between FC Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami has met strong opposition from Real Madrid, who say the move threatens the competition's integrity. The Spanish top-flight's president, Javier Tebas, has been pushing to take a La Liga fixture to the United States as part of efforts to expand the league's global reach. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved the proposal to hold the Barcelona-Villarreal game in Miami, with final authorisation now awaited from UEFA. Comunicado Oficial. — Real Madrid C.F. (@realmadrid) August 12, 2025 Both Barcelona and Villarreal have shown support for the idea. However, Real Madrid have issued a formal statement criticising the decision to move the fixture away from Villarreal's home stadium, El Madrigal, without consulting all clubs involved. Real Madrid's statement said: 'The integrity of the competition requires that all matches be played under the same conditions for all teams. Unilaterally modifying this system breaks the equality between competitors, compromises the legitimacy of the results and sets an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on interests unrelated to strictly sporting matters, with a clear impact on sporting integrity and the risk of adulterating the competition.' The club also argued the move breaches the principle of territorial reciprocity, where teams play one home and one away game against each other. Real Madrid have taken the dispute to football's governing bodies. They have written to FIFA, UEFA and the Spanish Higher Sports Council (CSD), requesting that the match not be authorised unless there is unanimous agreement from all clubs in the league. Their statement outlined three specific actions: A request to FIFA to refuse authorisation without the consent of all participating clubs. A request to UEFA to urge the RFEF to withdraw or deny the request, citing a 2018 rule preventing domestic league matches being played outside the country except in exceptional circumstances. A request to the Higher Sports Council not to grant administrative permission without unanimous consent. Real Madrid concluded: 'Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to respecting the national and international rules that guarantee the fairness and proper functioning of official competitions, and will defend their compliance before all competent authorities.' La Liga and the clubs involved have yet to respond publicly to Real Madrid's objections, leaving the future of the Miami fixture uncertain. The episode raises questions over how far leagues should go to pursue international expansion at the potential cost of sporting fairness. Real Madrid's resistance suggests a clear divide within Spanish football over the balance between commercial interests and competition integrity. It remains to be seen whether UEFA and FIFA will back La Liga's ambition or uphold Real Madrid's defence of tradition. For now, fans will wait to see if Miami hosts its first La Liga game this December or if the fixture stays on Spanish soil. Tags: BarcelonaFIFAFlorentino PerezReal MadridVillareal

Harakass Quits Wydad, Heads to Saudi Arabia

Wydad AC have confirmed the departure of defender Jamal Harakass to Saudi Pro League club Damac in the current summer transfer window. The Casablanca side brought an end to Harakass's spell at the club after head coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem deemed he was surplus to requirements. The 29-year-old was placed on the club's exit list shortly after Wydad participated in the FIFA Club World Cup. Harakass has agreed terms with Damac and will join the Saudi outfit in what will be his first professional stint in the Kingdom. According to Saudi daily Asharq Al-Awsat , the transfer is worth around 6 million Moroccan dirhams ($600,000). Damac have moved to secure Harakass as a replacement for Algerian centre-back Farouk Chafai, whose contract was not renewed at the end of last season. A former player for Raja Casablanca and Mouloudia Oujda, Harakass has also featured for the Moroccan national team, earning four caps during the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring once.
