has suffered a Rs 401 crore net loss in the fourth quarter due to over 10 times jump in provisions against bad loans while it breached financial covenants relating to borrowing outstanding.

The Kerala-headquartered microfinance lender earned a net profit of Rs 120 crore in the year ago period. The sector slipped into an asset quality crisis from the first quarter of FY25.
For the full financial year ending March 31, 2025, the company suffered a net loss of Rs 223 crore as compared with Rs 450 crore of net profit in the preceding fiscal. Pre-provision operating profit for the year stood at Rs 868 crore, up 15% year-on-year.
The company's total income for the quarter stood lower at Rs 556 crore against Rs 645 crore in the year-ago period.
Its gross non-performing assets ratio soared to 4.84% at the end of the reporting period from 2.29% a year back. The Karnataka Micro Loan and Small Loan (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Ordinance contributed to fluctuations in portfolio performance, the company said in a regulatory filing to stock exchanges.
Provisions against bad loans during the quarter stood at Rs 652 crore against Rs 62 crore in the year-ago period.
"There has been instances of breach covenants relating to borrowings outstanding during the quarter and the year ended as at 31 March 2025," the company said in a regulatory filing to stock exchanges.
The lender's gross loan portfolio rose 1.3% year-on-year to Rs 12,357 crore while borrower base grew by 2.3% to 34.3 lakhs.
"With a conscious decision to moderate disbursements for the fiscal year, our emphasis remained on conserving tier-1 capital, maintaining strong liquidity buffers, resolving asset quality challenges, and steadily improving collection efficiency," Sayeed said.

" However, the strength of such devotees is very limited and directly impacting the income of boatmen. In the current scenario, a boatman is charging Rs 50 for a devotee to ferry a pilgrim from Quila Ghat to Sangam, and the rate from other ghats to Sangam is more or less. Shantanu, a boatman, told TOI, "Around 75% of all around 1,500 boatmen in and around Prayagraj earn their livelihoods by catering to the pilgrims at the limited attendance of visitors who arrive at Sangam to take holy dips, boatmen are fighting to earn big earnings. The strength of devotees has declined since the temperature crossed 42 degrees Celsius." Rakesh, another boatman, asserted, "We are hardly able to manage better earnings by catering to the few visitors who arrive either to take holy dips or to immerse the mortal remains." A section of boatmen who were earlier engaged in ferrying pilgrims during the season are planning to do some other work to earn a livelihood.

Nashik civic body starts repairing city roads, fills over 6,000 potholes in a week
Nashik: With the rain taking a break, the Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) public works department has commenced extensive road repair operations across the city. The civic administration announced on Tuesday that it had successfully filled 6,226 potholes across the six divisions within the last week alone. These crucial road repair efforts began ahead of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's two-day visit to Nashik city on Sunday and Monday. During his visit, the chief minister travelled through various city roads while attending multiple programmes. The condition of roads in Nashik had significantly worsened due to continuous heavy rainfall last month, posing considerable risks to motorists. Furthermore, roads excavated by Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) for laying piped natural gas pipelines added to the deterioration. While the NMC had initially planned to begin repair works from May 15, persistent showers prevented these efforts. Now, with the rainfall having ceased, the civic body has been able to fully embark on its road repair agenda. An NMC official, while talking to TOI, said they conducted a fresh survey of the city roads and found around 9,000 potholes in various parts of the city. Steep power bill increase comes as shock for Pkl residents
Residents of Panchkula have received electricity bills showing increase of 100% to 400% for the period from mid-April to mid-May, compared to the previous year, despite minimal changes in unit consumption. While the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission implemented a rate increase of 20 to 30 paise per kWh/kVAh for domestic and industrial categories, an analysis of various bills reveals disproportionate charges despite marginal increase in consumption. This has had a particularly adverse effect on middle-class families, the economically disadvantaged and pensioners. S K Nayar, Citizens' Welfare Association president from Sector 15, experienced a 145% increase in charges while maintaining similar consumption. His bill rose to Rs 2,042 for 210 units, compared to Rs 833 for 216 units in April 2024. "It is a loot of public money, and a wrong step was taken. Earlier, there used to be a minimum charge, and even if you went out of the city for a few months, the bill amount would not pinch you. But they are imposing fixed charges, which have burned a hole in the pockets of the common man," he rued. Sector 25 resident Mohit Gupta received a bill of Rs 5,641 for 668.25 units, while last April's bill was Rs 2,673 for 496.23 units. Despite lower consumption previously, this year's rate increase has resulted in substantially higher charges. Sant Singh Gill, former RWA president of Sector 25, saw his bill increase to Rs 3,745, as compared to Rs 1,286 last year, representing a 191% rise in charges against a 47% increase in consumption. Analysis shows varied impacts: Cases with abnormal consumption increases saw 430% higher bills, while 38% consumption increases resulted in 111% higher bills. Even with 21% reduced consumption, bills increased by 87%. Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVNL) chief engineer (Operations) Chandan Singh said, "The bills have been generated as per HERC's current rates. Some may have felt bills are higher because consumption has increased. As far as fixed charges are concerned, it is a certain amount for certain uses." The 2025-26 electricity order confirms rate increases of 20 to 30 paise per kWh/kVAh for both domestic and industrial categories in Haryana.
