Orpheus and Eurydice at Edinburgh Playhouse ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Orpheus and Eurydice at Edinburgh Playhouse ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Despite the richness of the English language, I think there are not enough superlatives to praise the creation of this rendition of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice. From the very opening where we see the superb funambulist as Eurydice descend twisting into the underworld hanging from a harness to the final dénouement, the staging was outstanding, the music perfection, the singing immensely moving, and the acrobatics stunning.
The set was minimalist but of a beautiful monochrome setting off the red of Eurydice's dress with the surtitles projected onto the back often marvellously smoking and dissolving as the Italian was sung.
The conductor, Laurence Cummings, was masterful in his control of the wonderful Scottish Chamber Orchestra, whilst the singing of not only Iestyn Davies as Orpheus and Samantha Clarke as both Eurydice & Amor but also that of the chorus from Scottish Opera was flawless.
This production by Opera Queensland employing the astounding skills and beauty of the Australian contemporary circus company, Circa demanded a standing ovation, something I do not engage in lightly.

Strictly Come Dancing confirm 12th contestant who may have an edge on competition

Fans are ecstatic about hearing the official line-up for the upcoming series of Strictly. Strictly Come Dancing has confirmed its 12th contestant for the 2025 series, who may have an edge on the competition due to one lucky aspect of his personal life. Neighbours star Stefan Dennis, who is best known for his role as Paul Robinson on the Australian soap, was revealed as the latest star on This Morning on Thursday (August 14)- and his wife is a professional dancer. ‌ Stefan expressed his anticipation for the show, saying to presenters Emma Willis and Craig Doyle: "I'm [feeling] pretty good. I'm very excited to be doing something that's completely and utterly out of my comfort zone. But also because of that, quite a bit petrified." ‌ The 66-year-old went on to admit that he's not naturally gifted in the dance department, but his wife, Gail, a professional dancer, has been trying to help him get into the groove ahead of the series. ‌ "It's so ironic because my gorgeous wife, wherever she is, somewhere out there, Gail, is a professional dancer," he said, reports the Daily Star. "She's been trying to teach me in the most frustrating way for her for sure, because I just keep burying my head in the sand, going, 'This is not happening.'" He added: "She's been giving me some good tips, but that doesn't mean I'm any good." In a statement about joining the BBC dance competition, Stefan said: "This is an opportunity for me to once again learn to step out of my comfort zone in the world of television. Looking forward to the sparkle and reaching for the sky." Stefan first graced our screens on Neighbours in 1985 and has since appeared in over 6,000 episodes during the show's 40-year run. ‌ Before his stint on the beloved soap, Stefan had a lengthy career in Australian television, with roles in shows such as Prisoner, The Henderson Kids, The Sullivans, Young Doctors and Sons and Daughters, among others. He has also made appearances in UK shows like The Bill, Dream Team, River City and Casualty, and starred in the West End musical Blood Brothers. This news follows the announcement that Vicky Pattison will be the 11th celebrity to join the line-up, as revealed earlier on This Morning. ‌ The TV presenter, author, podcast and radio host won the hearts of the nation when she was crowned Queen of the Jungle on I'm A Celebrity in 2015. On her participation in Strictly, Vicky expressed: "'I'm absolutely buzzing to be part of this year's Strictly Come Dancing line up... but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't terrified. "I am a not a natural dancer! However, it's such an amazing opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and to challenge myself in a completely new way and I just really hope I don't make too much of a fool of myself!"

Beyonce and Jay-Z's huge plans as they buy mega home in Cotswolds

EXCLUSIVE: Beyoncé and Jay-Z sparked rumours of a move to the UK when they were spotted visiting the Oxfordshire hotspot in June - but we now understand it's official Superstar singer Beyoncé and rapper husband, rapper Jay-Z, are in the process of buying a plot of farmland in the Cotswolds. The US pair sparked rumours of a move to Britain when they were spotted visiting Oxfordshire in June. The Mirror understands Beyoncé, 43, and Jay-Z, 55, are now in the process of sealing the deal for 58 acres with planning permission to build a lavish country retreat. ‌ Last night, a source close to the sale said: 'They were in negotiation on the price, and it isn't on the market any more, which would suggest it's a done deal.' ‌ Architectural drawings obtained exclusively by the Mirror describe the opportunity as a 'spectacular rural estate' offering 'seamless indoor-outdoor living, combining timeless materials with contemporary architecture.' It comes after David Beckham speaks 'as a father' in 'family' announcement after latest Brooklyn snub. ‌ The document continues: 'Meticulously designed to integrate with the natural landscape, the property offers a striking architectural statement, blending contemporary style with sustainable building practices.' The land, with permission for a lake and woodland, was sold off-market with a guide price of £8.5 million, but it is unclear how much the A-list couple paid. It sits just five minutes from the chocolate box village of Great Tew, close to where a host of celebrities, including the Beckhams, Simon Cowell and former US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, call home. Exclusive private members club Soho Farmhouse, which hosted Meghan Markle 's hen do, is a stone's throw away. And posh farm shop Daylesford Organic, visited by US vice president JD Vance earlier this week, is also on the doorstep. Beyoncé and Jay-Z reportedly visited the land by helicopter earlier this summer during the English leg of her Cowboy Carter World Tour. An insider said at the time: 'In the past week, [the couple] flew between her London gigs to view a 58-acre plot of land. ‌ "Located close to friends Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and with Simon Cowell and the Beckhams as neighbours, she felt it would be an ideal UK home for her family, away from the city when they're in the country.' It previously emerged that the couple were keen to put down roots here after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires earlier this year. A close friend said: 'The wildfires have given them a good reason to look outside of Los Angeles to build new bases. They will always be based in LA, but the UK is on the agenda. Beyonce loves the UK because they support everything she does.' ‌ Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who share twins Rumi and Sir, eight, and older daughter Blue Ivy, 13, aren't the first big US names to relocate to the sleepy Oxfordshire countryside. Ellen DeGeneres, 67, and wife Portia de Rossi, 52, made the move across the Atlantic to the area last year in a bid to escape Donald Trump 's America. The couple's first home was hit by flooding but they've since relocated to a £38 million hilltop pad set in sprawling grounds. It is around a 30-minute drive from their original home, and planning documents show it has a 'sustainable drainage system' and is not 'at risk of flooding.' ‌ Brad Pitt reportedly owns a home nearby, while Tom Cruise and singer Ariana Grande are frequent visitors. Last August, Taylor Swift and her partner Travis Kelce rented a £33.3 million bolthole in the village of Great Tew during the UK leg of her Eras tour. And the late tech giant Steve Jobs' daughter Eve, 27, wed Olympic show jumper Harry Charles, 26, in the local church last month. Guests at the ceremony included Former US Vice President Kamala Harris, Bill Gates's daughter Jennifer and Bruce Springsteen's daughter, Jessica. ‌ US Vice President JD Vance is currently holidaying with his family at Dean Manor, a Grade II-listed country home in the tiny Cotswolds hamlet of Dean. He also stayed with the Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Kent and will later travel to Scotland. Beyoncé and Jay-Z are no strangers to the property market. In 2017, they moved into a 12,000 sq ft residence in Malibu, complete with a cinema, gym, wine cellar and ocean views. And they splashed out £66 million later that year for a 30,000 sq ft mansion in Bel Air, California, with eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, four swimming pools and a 15-car garage. News of the couple's UK move comes hours after Beyoncé won her first Emmy award for Beyoncé Bowl - her Christmas Day halftime NFL show streamed by Netflix. When approached by the Mirror, the previous landowner declined to comment. Beyonce's publicist was approached for comment.

Now, Pride and Prejudice fans have a shot at snapping up a unique piece of TV history as the picturesque manor house hits the market. The grade II-listed country house, immortalised to millions as the home of protagonist Elizabeth Bennet and her family, is up for sale for £3.95million. The BBC's 1995 adaptation featured Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as the dashing Mr Darcy. It is widely lauded as the best adaptation of the Jane Austen classic ever made. Those wanting to live their very own Jane Austen-inspired life can strut through the Queen Anne front pillared portico or wistfully meander through the mature gardens like the on-screen family. The historic country house, featuring a wood carved doorway reputedly by Grinling Gibbons as well as eight bedrooms. It also boasts seven bathrooms and six reception rooms, providing ample room for family life and entertainment. The second floor is a flat and games room, says Knight Frank, who are handling the sale. And there's plenty of outside space too, with extensive lawns approaching the house dominated by a 400-year-old Lebanese Cedar, which has one of the biggest ever recorded in the UK. 14 The Bennet family walking into the front of Luckington Court Credit: PIC FOR REFERENCE ONLY - NOT FOR 14 Pride and Prejudice 1995 is considered the best adaptation of the novel Credit: Alamy 14 Jenifer Ehle, playing Elizabeth Bennet walking into Luckington Court gardens Credit: PIC FOR REFERENCE ONLY - NOT FOR 14 The small country estate boasts luscious views Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 14 It is described as a 'quintessentially English' property Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media The new owners will also enjoy a tennis court, stable block, a dovecote, an outdoor riding school. The property also boasts home farm buildings, 1.27 acres of woodland and four well-presented cottages. James Walker, Regional Head of Central in Knight Frank's Country Department, said: "It is a privilege to be involved with the sale of Luckington Court, which is the epitome of a classic, small country estate. "The next custodian will appreciate the subtle grandeur and the sense of pride it evokes. "Quintessentially English and wonderfully understated." Prior to the 1995 TV series coming out, another version of Pride And Prejudice was written for the BBC in 1980 by the late Fay Weldon. But the 1995 version is arguably better known as it helped make Colin Firth a household name. And its famous lake scene inspired similar sequences in Bridget Jones' Diary and Bridgerton. Luckington Court at Luckington near Chippenham in Wiltshire had last been taken off the market in 2023, listed with estate agent Wooley & Wallis with an asking price of £6 million. In 2018, it was put up for sale for the first time in 70 years, through Strutt & Parker, with a higher guide price of £9 million. 14 The Bennet sisters walking in the garden of Longbourn which is Luckington Court in real life 14 The picturesque property is nestled in a peaceful area Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media 14 Luckington Court in Luckington, Wiltshire, famously portrayed Longbourn Credit: Kennedy Newsand Media
