Margao locals slam govt inaction on unsafe public buildings
Nearly two years after identifying several Margao govt buildings for structural repairs, citizens have now questioned the inaction of authorities to carry out required safety measures.
In a reply to the leader of the opposition, Yuri Alemao, in the assembly in Aug 2023, then PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral said several high-footfall buildings were on the PWD's building repair list. The old collectorate building in Margao, audited in June 2020, and the PWD office building and quarters at Fatorda, audited in Feb 2021, were found to 'require repairs for increasing the life of the structure'. The old ITI building at Borda, Margao, audited in June 2021, and the civil & criminal court building in Margao, audited in Aug 2022, both carried identical recommendations for structural repairs.
The Junta Quarters at Pajifond, Fatorda, audited in March 2020, also required repairs to increase the structure's lifespan.
Despite audit findings, no action has been taken to address safety concerns, sources said. The inaction is concerning amid recent building collapses in Margao, raising questions about whether the new Disaster Management Act, 2005, directives will be applied to govt structures posing safety risks.

No claims or objections on Bihar draft voter list in first 24 hours: EC
The Election Commission of India has said that not a single claim or objection was filed within the first 24 hours of publication of the draft electoral roll in Bihar by any of the 1.6 lakh booth level agents (BLAs) deployed by a several political parties across the state's 90,712 booths.
