Jeep's New Rooftop Tent: Is This the Ultimate Overlanding Upgrade?
Overlanding is popular, and automakers have caught on, which is why you can now find off-road-ready versions of nearly every SUV on sale today. Arguably, though, it all started with Jeep, at least in the US. You've been able to church up your Jeep with everything from all-weather maps to winches for years now, but Jeep is taking things to the next level. The Stellantis-owned automaker debuted a rooftop tent at Overland Expo West, sitting atop a hybrid Wrangler 4xe clad in plenty of other modifications. It answers the questions many asked months ago, when Jeep filed a patent for a rooftop tent to attach directly to a Wrangler's roof.
The new tent is the result of a collaborative effort between Jeep and Dometic, the latter of which touts over twenty years of experience in the outdoor accessories biz. It touts a carbon fiber shell, a material chosen for its overall lightness and relative durability, but most importantly, the tent bolts right into the Wrangler's roof, meaning no need for a roof rack. That improves aerodynamics and potentially saves a lot of weight. Further reducing weight is Dometic's Air Frame design, which replaces poles traditionally made from steel or other heavier materials with lightweight, inflatable ones. Jeep Performance Parts - the specific Mopar branch responsible for introducing the trick bit of kit - dubbed the tent the "Awning and Rooftop Tent (ARRT) concept." The ARRT features an integrated awning that swings out 270 degrees, providing ample protection from the sun or precipitation. There's even room for a queen-size mattress inside.
Since the ARRT is purpose-built for a specific model, it offers some benefits you absolutely won't find on any other rooftop tent. The tent integrates with the SUV in a way that allows access from inside the vehicle via the removable roof panels, complete with a little carbon fiber "step." The step stands over the center console, allowing easy access and protecting the upholstery.
As we mentioned, the Jeep tent concept is designed with only a single model in mind, the four-door Wrangler, and Jeep picked a doozy of a way to showcase the tent. The ARRT sits atop the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon Sunchaser concept, which debuted back in April. The Sunchaser touts a bevvy of other factory-fresh modifications, including a two-inch lift, Mopar lightbar, 37-inch BFGoodrich mud tires, rock rails, and vented steel fender flares. Inside, the Sunchaser wears custom two-tone leather seats, gloss black interior trim, all-weather floor mats, and more.
There is no official word on whether or not the ARRT will ever see a life outside of conventions and trade shows, but we sure hope so. There's no doubt in our mind that Jeep's rooftop tent would sell like hotcakes. While it may seem like a long-overdue accessory from a brand like Jeep, there are actually relatively few OEMs that offer a rooftop tent in their parts catalog, with Volvo being the only one that immediately jumps to mind. While quality is undoubtedly beyond reproach, Jeep could run into a similar problem as Volvo: cost. Quality aside, there are numerous less expensive options for Volvo shoppers interested in a rooftop tent. Based on the quality and construction of the ARRT, we don't think it would come cheap. Here's hoping it comes to market one way or the other, though.

WATCH: Bradenton road rage incident about turn signal ends in crash, shooting, police say
BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA)— Three people are facing charges after a road rage incident about a turn signal ended in a shooting and crash, the Bradenton Police Department announced. On Monday, around 3:20 p.m., Raesean Poole, 33, was waiting in a Jeep Compass to turn left out of the parking lot at 101 Riverfront Boulevard when Anthony Williams, 20, was driving a Buick sedan east on Riverfront Boulevard and turned left into the parking lot. Williams parked his vehicle when Poole backed up his car to confront him about not using a turn signal. Williams and a teenage passenger then exited the Buick. According to BPD, Poole told officers that Williams showed him a gun during a confrontation. CCTV footage showed Poole begin to drive away several times but repeatedly stop and continue arguing with Williams, police said. Poole then turned onto Riverfront Boulevard, reversed, and accelerated toward Williams, hitting a stop sign, a tree, and then hitting Williams in the leg. According to police, in response to the crash, the teenager retrieved the gun and fired into Poole's Jeep. The three are charged with: Poole is being charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle. Charges against Williams are pending. The teen is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm. Ousted Stellantis CEO Admits 'Things Could Have Been Done Differently'
The latest car news, reviews, and features. In the United States, former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares left behind a legacy of conflict and fractured relationships. To us, it's obvious why Tavares clashed with dealers and company insiders; his campaign against legacy powertrains led to alienated sales forces and fans alike, but it didn't have to be that way, he said in an interview with Bloomberg . According to Tavares, his key blunder was his failure to bring U.S. dealerships around to his way of thinking. Without support from front-line employees, selling his new strategy to other stakeholders became an insurmountable obstacle. 'The dealers in the U.S. did not want to support what we were trying to do, which is my responsibility,' he told the outlet. 'Many things could have been done differently,' he continued. The extent of the rift between Tavares and the company's U.S. operation became clear immediately after his departure. He was barely out the door when Dodge announced it would continue production of the V8 Durango—powered by the Hemi engine that Tavares campaigned to mothball—indefinitely. Since, we've seen credible rumors pointing to a revival of V8s across its U.S. portfolio, thus far, however, nothing has been officially announced, and there have been no outward signs that Ram or Dodge have any Hemi-powered prototypes in the development pipeline. If it's going to happen, the investment needs to happen where Stellantis can most readily pay for it. Translation? Pay attention to the trucks. But while enthusiasts may be hanging on to the Hemi as a sign of life from Stellantis, company insiders have bigger problems on their hands. The absence of V8 trucks may seem glaring to us, but Ram's biggest problem wasn't a powertrain miscue, but the many-times-delayed introduction of its overhauled pickup lineup. Even as production ramped up in 2024, Ram struggled to build trucks that worked, forcing dealerships to address quality issues that should have been fixed before delivery. The resulting frustration further alienated employees, dealers and customers. Tavares began his career with Renault as a test engineer; now the ex-CEO spends his retirement racing cars and working on his farm, he told AN . Tavares called Filosa a 'logical, credible choice' to succeed him in this tumultuous environment, which he expects will result in more consolidation among automakers, especially in Europe—to say nothing of the 'chaos' imposed by the trade war. Alfa Romeo Tonale Owner in Canada Reports Rust After 1 Year, Dealer Declines Repair
It's disappointing to find a flaw on your brand-new car after just one year of ownership, but it's even worse if your dealership downplays it and refuses to fix it. This is what Reddit user r/AlfaRomeo says happened to them when they reported tailgate rust to their dealership. It seems they're not the only owner affected, and that a design flaw is causing the issue. As you can see in the photo above, the paintwork is bubbling up and flaking off on the inside of the tailgate of this Vancouver driver's Tonale, near the backup camera, and the metal is already exposed, so it's probably just a matter of time before it rusts through. The owner says that the way the drainage channel is built, and with the two plastic stoppers capping it, at least a quarter of an inch of water or more has to accumulate before the water starts to drain out. The dealership has pronounced the condition "100% normal" and says the warranty doesn't cover it. For the record, the Alfa Romeo warranty states that, for damage that does not appear on an outer panel that's visible when you walk around the vehicle, the coverage is three years, but only if it has rusted through and perforated the panel, which is not (yet) the case here. The dealership shrugged it off, showing the owner photos of other Tonales with the same problem. We see only two options for this owner. Take it to court and perhaps get other Tonale owners involved to get a class action going, or just drill proper draining holes to affect a permanent fix, and repair or rust-treat the area out of pocket.
