Six BJP workers injured in alleged TIPRA Motha attack in Tripura

The Hindu3 days ago
At least six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers sustained injuries when activists of the Tipra Motha party allegedly attacked a BJP office during the Prime Minister's Mann Ki Baat radio programme at Asharambari in Khowai district on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Tipra Motha leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, who returned from New Delhi on Sunday (July 27, 2025), denied his party's involvement in the incident.
Local BJP leaders claimed that over 50 Tipra Motha members, armed with sticks and sharp-cutting weapons, attacked the party's Mandal office and assaulted BJP cadres. Two cars and five motorcycles were reportedly damaged in the attack.
The BJP office was also vandalised during the incident.
Police said an investigation has been initiated but no arrests have been made so far. Asharambari is a tribal Assembly constituency where the Tipra Motha has a significant presence.
BJP State president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Bhattacharjee condemned the incident. Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) State secretary Jitendra Chowdhury also criticised the Tipra Motha for the alleged attack.
Clashes between BJP and Tipra Motha supporters have become frequent in interior areas of the State, particularly over organisational expansion. Several persons were injured in recent clashes in the Charilam and Takarjala areas.

'One Nation One Election' Could Boost Economy, Cut Disruptions: Experts NK Singh & Prachi Mishra To JPC

They suggested that holding national and state elections together could significantly enhance India's economic growth, investment climate, and governance efficiency On Wednesday, a meeting of the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) led by BJP lawmaker PP Chaudhary took place in Parliament discussing the crucial One Nation One Election legislation. The subject of the day was titled 'Interaction with Shri NK Singh, former Rajya Sabha Member, Chairman of Fifteenth Finance Commission of India, former Member of the Planning Commission, former Revenue Secretary, Secretary to former Prime Minister and noted economist on the said Bills, assisted by Dr Prachi Mishra, Prof of Economics and Head & Director of Isaac Centre for Public Policy, Ashoka University". A presentation by NK Singh and Prachi Mishra made a compelling economic case for simultaneous elections. They suggested that holding national and state elections together could significantly enhance India's economic growth, investment climate, and governance efficiency. They estimated that real GDP growth is 1.5 percentage points higher around simultaneous elections compared to staggered ones, translating into an economic gain of nearly Rs 4.5 lakh crore in today's terms, equivalent to half of India's health budget or a third of the education budget. They also noted that gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), a proxy for investment activity, is 0.5 percentage points higher after simultaneous elections, reflecting increased confidence among private and foreign investors. However, frequent, staggered elections are said to cause wide-ranging disruptions to economic and social life. Industries such as manufacturing, construction, tourism, and healthcare suffer from repeated cycles of uncertainty, and migrant workers—who constitute nearly a third of India's population—are especially affected. Repeated elections force them to travel home frequently, leading to lost wages and missed voting rights. The impact also extends to education and law enforcement. Primary school enrolment dips by 0.5 percentage points around non-simultaneous elections due to teachers being deployed on election duty and schools doubling as polling stations. Crime rates tend to spike more during staggered polls as police forces remain diverted for longer periods. One of the starkest observations is that India has witnessed elections every single year since 1986, placing the nation in a state of perpetual election mode. This results in the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being enforced up to four times in five years, restricting policymaking and delaying developmental projects. Moreover, the political consequences of frequent elections include a spillover of populist promises across states and a sharp rise in fiscally unsustainable freebies. Singh warns this trend represents a 'race to the bottom" in fiscal populism. In agriculture, frequent polls create speculative uncertainty over policies like minimum support prices (MSPs), subsidies, and loan waivers, distorting farmer decision-making and hampering long-term planning. The findings are likely to fuel the ongoing debate around the feasibility and desirability of One Nation One Election, with proponents arguing that it could improve governance stability, reduce fiscal populism, and enhance policy continuity. The panel includes members like Supriya Sule (NCP), Mukul Wasnik, Randeep Surjewala, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (all from Congress), Anil Desai (Shiv Sena UBT), and Kalyan Banerjee (TMC). Representing the ruling alliance are Anurag Thakur, Sambit Patra, Bhartruhari Mahtab, Baijayant Panda, Anil Baluni (all from BJP), Shrikant Shinde (Shiv Sena), and Harish Balayogi (TDP), among others. The JPC was constituted during the last winter session of Parliament after the Centre agreed to subject the ONOE Bill to detailed legislative scrutiny. Initially tabled by law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, the committee's membership was later expanded to 39, accommodating demands from the opposition. AAP, BJP spar over waterlogging and desilting audit

New Delhi: AAP and BJP sparred again on Wednesday over the issue of waterlogging on key roads after a heavy spell of rain the day before. AAP's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned the fate of crores of rupees spent by various agencies on the desilting of drains and asked if Delhi govt conducted a third-party audit, as mandated by Delhi High Court. BJP said the responsibility of the audit lay with the previous AAP govt, as it was ordered by the HC in April 2024, and the report was to be submitted by June 30 last year. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Bharadwaj claimed that Tuesday's rainfall was "ordinary", yet several arterial roads, including ITO, Zakhira, Sadar Bazar and various stretches in Lutyens' Delhi, were inundated. Despite that, Delhi drowned. This directly points to massive corruption in the name of desilting," Bharadwaj alleged. He added that BJP govt was entirely focused on Minto Bridge, which resulted in waterlogging in Connaught Place. "An investigation must be launched into why Connaught Place was flooded. Those who were awarded hundreds of crores worth of desilting contracts must be investigated," Bharadwaj said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perfectly Timed Photos You Won't Believe Are Real Read More Undo The AAP functionary also said the order to conduct the third-party audit into the desilting of drains was issued on April 8, 2024, and called on chief minister Rekha Gupta to make the report public. AAP councillors also gheraoed the office of mayor Raja Iqbal Singh at Civic Centre, charging that MCD failed to control waterlogging in the city. The AAP's leader of opposition in the MCD house, Ankush Narang, wrote to Singh demanding immediate action. Narang alleged that waterlogging was a reflection of "gross negligence and administrative failure" of BJP-led MCD. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that Kejriwal govt was supposed to conduct a third-party audit of the desilting of drains to make the report public by June 30, 2024, which it "failed" to do. "Delhi witnessed the loss of nearly 40 innocent lives in 2024 due to waterlogging, and even after the high court's directive, Kejriwal govt did not conduct the third-party desilting audit. This clearly shows that for the past 10 years, Kejriwal govt was involved in a scam under the guise of desilting," Sachdeva said. "Being a minister in that very govt, Bharadwaj must answer why the audit report was not made public by June 30, 2024," he added. Sachdeva said Bharadwaj must explain why no action was taken against the "guilty leaders and officials" responsible for the deaths caused by waterlogging in 2024. BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused Bharadwaj of posting "false and misleading" statements on social media by claiming that Minto Bridge was closed due to waterlogging, but the traffic was running smoothly on the stretch.

CM YUVA scheme turning job seekers into job creators, says CM

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the CM YUVA Scheme has emerged as a transformative instrument of social change enabling lakhs of youth across the state to embark on a journey from self-employment to self-reliance. Speaking at the inaugural function of the 2-day CM YUVA Conclave and Expo 2025 here, the CM said: "This initiative has proved to be an enabler for lakhs of youths. Many of them have now become full-time job-givers. The officials and department must ensure that at least 50 youth from each district visit the CM YUVA Conclave and Exhibition so they can gain first-hand knowledge about various govt schemes, startup resources and market opportunities. " He said over 68,000 youth have so far received interest-free and collateral-free loans amounting to Rs 2,751 crore under the scheme. "This is not just a scheme—it's a movement. A golden opportunity for every youth who has a dream but lacks resources," he said."It is not just a financial aid programme, but a robust platform providing mentorship, market access, and essential resources to empower young entrepreneurs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The state govt is offering 10% margin money assistance to support budding entrepreneurs further," he said. The CM also launched the 'UP Mart'—a portal for machinery suppliers, aimed at easing access to essential tools and equipment for startups, besides witnessing the signing of 17 MoUs to boost entrepreneurship in the state. Addressing university vice chancellors and youth, the CM expressed concern over the growing disconnect between academic institutions and society. "Our institutions are becoming isolated islands, increasingly cut off from the people and government schemes. This disconnect is dangerous," he said. He pointed out that due to a lack of information, many young people fall prey to fraudulent schemes, get burdened by debt, and are often left with no choice but to migrate in search of opportunities. "But now, this cycle will cease to exist… thanks to this scheme," he said. Reflecting on the 2017 Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra of the BJP, prepared under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said a commitment was made to promote traditional industries through a dedicated scheme. Acting on this, a statewide survey was conducted post-2017, which revealed that every district had unique traditional enterprises. However, due to corruption, lawlessness, and large-scale migration, these industries nearly collapsed. Turning this challenge into an opportunity, the state govt launched the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme in 2018. "What began as a revival initiative has today become a national brand," Yogi said, noting that the scheme helped boost UP's exports from Rs 86,000 crore to over Rs 2 lakh crore. "Earlier, Chinese products flooded the markets during festivals. Today, locally made ODOP items are finding a place in every household," he said. He added that the Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana launched in 2019, was offering training, toolkits and dignity to traditional artisans. "A society that doesn't respect its artisans has no future," he stressed. Yogi also announced that products from Uttar Pradesh will be prominently featured at the International Trade Show scheduled from Sep 25 to 29, 2025, at the India Expo Centre in Noida. "The buyer-seller meet held at this event has become a massive platform for showcasing the state's potential. No one would have imagined such innovation and enterprise from UP just a few years ago. From 4 lakh participants in the first year to 5 lakh in the second, the show is pushing forward our vision of taking local products to the global stage," he said. The event was attended by MSME minister Rakesh Sachan, chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary Alok Kumar, vice chancellors from various universities and other dignitaries.
