Karnataka: Six-year-old girl raped in mosque premises, accused arrested
The Karnataka Police on Tuesday arrested the father of a Maulvi on charges of raping a six-year-old girl within the premises of a mosque in Chikkaballapura city, located close to Bengaluru.
The Chikkaballapura Women's police filed an FIR against the accused following a complaint by the victim's mother and subsequently arrested him. The accused has since been remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, the accused, who is the father of a Maulvi, was given a room to stay on the mosque premises by the jamat out of respect. Misusing this trust, the accused allegedly lured the victim under the pretext of buying her a chocolate and then raped her.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused's son works as a Maulvi at another mosque. The accused, originally from Uttar Pradesh, settled in Chikkaballapura 20 years ago and also sells clothes on the footpath.
Locals have expressed outrage after the incident came to light and have criticised the local jamat for providing shelter to the accused in the mosque. The victim's mother, along with locals, thrashed the accused before handing him over to the police.
Earlier, in a concerning development in Yadgir district, a minor girl filed a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on April 9 against a constable, alleging two years of sexual exploitation by him.
The incident was reported from the vicinity of the Sydapura police station near Gurumathkal taluk. The victim lodged her complaint against the constable at the Yadgir Women's Police Station.
Earlier, in 2021, Karnataka Police arrested a constable who allegedly raped a minor rape victim on the promise of marriage in Mangaluru district of the state. The accused cop was arrested and terminated from service.
The Kadaba Police had slapped cases against him under the POCSO Act, 2012 for taking advantage of his official position, raping a minor and for criminal intimidation.
A 55-year-old man, who allegedly raped his minor daughter for a year, has been arrested in Karnataka's Gadag district in April, 2025. The 16-year-old victim, who was impregnated, has been admitted to the Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) for treatment.
According to the police, the man sexually assaulted his minor daughter repeatedly over a year at their residence. The accused took advantage of situations when no one else was home and the daughter was alone to commit the heinous crime.
The accused had also threatened his daughter not to reveal the sexual assaults to anyone, threatening her with dire consequences. The police have arrested the accused and are conducting a DNA test.

Bhopal: A 16-year-old minor girl was allegedly abducted and raped by an auto driver in the Nishatpura locality. The accused allegedly held her captive by locking her in a room, and subjected her to sexual assault for 3 months in the city. The incident came to light when the minor's health deteriorated, and her maternal grandmother took her to a hospital, where she was diagnosed as two months pregnant. Following the hospital's report, Nishatpura police recorded the minor's statements and registered a case against the accused on charges of rape, kidnapping, and wrongful confinement under relevant sections of BNS and the POCSO Act. ‘Fake' certicate for job: Surat court rejects anticipatory bail application of dismissed cop
An anticipatory bail application of a dismissed police officer, who had allegedly obtained a fake caste certificate to land a job, was on Wednesday rejected by the Surat District Court. The officer served as the Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Surat city police before his services were terminated. B M Chaudhary was dismissed from service as per an order by the state home department, dated May 20. A week later, on May 25, he was booked under Section 12(1)(A), 12(1)(B) of the Gujarat Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (Regulation of Issuance and Verification of Caste Certificate) Act, 2018. Chaudhary then filed an anticipatory bail application with Surat District Court of 14th Additional Session Judge B M Govani a few days ago. The order passed by the court on Wednesday stated: 'Investigating Officer is hereby directed to strictly comply with the provisions of Section 35(2) of BNSS (the arrest of a person without a warrant when a complaint, credible information, or reasonable suspicion exists that they are involved in a non-cognizable offense) and the ratio laid down by Supreme Court in the case of Arneshkumar Vs. State of Bihar in their true letter and spirit.' As per the details of the case, Chaduhary's late father Motiram Chaudhary had allegedly obtained a fake ST certificate, issued to him on July 19, 1990. Chaudhary then allegedly landed a job using the certificate. He was recruited as a sub-inspector in 1990, and later was promoted to the posts of a police inspector and then an assistant commissioner of police. Chaudhary had been posted as the ACP, K division, Surat city police, since 2022. The case was filed against Chaudhary based on a letter by Praveen Parghi, president of Adijati Vikas Trust, Godhra, on October 7 last year. Parghi claimed that Chaudhary had used a fake ST certificate to get his job and promotions. The State Vigilance Department ordered the Gujarat Police's vigilance cell to launch a probe. According to the FIR, the commission had written to Chaudhary '15 times' in 2024 seeking documents, but he delayed the process, seeking more time. The State Vigilance Department subsequently ordered registration of an offence against him, it stated. Additional Public Prosecutor Dighant Tevar said, 'The accused police officer had obtained a tribal certificate to get a job in the police department. The investigation agency had reminded him 15 times to appear for statements, but he failed to turn up.' Defence lawyer M A Patel did not respond to calls till the press time.

Food dept cracks down on meat shops in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: Food safety department has launched a crackdown on illegal slaughtering, poor hygiene and unregistered food business operators (FBOs) in Ghaziabad. This led to closure notices, seizure of equipment and penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act on Wednesday. During an inspection at Halal Chicken Shop in Shastri Nagar, chicken slaughtering was found to be taking place despite the outlet having no registration for a slaughterhouse, assistant commissioner of food (Grade II), Ghaziabad, Dr Arvind Yadav told TOI. "The FBO had a registration for a meat shop but not for slaughtering. As a preventive measure, the slaughtering equipment was seized while he was allowed to continue the shop and sale of meat. A penalty was imposed on him as per provisions of the Food Safety Act," Dr Yadav said. In Indirapuram's Kanawani Pulia area, a meat shop, run by Guddu Qureshi, was found operating without any food registration. Legal proceedings under Section 58 of the Act were initiated and the shop was shut down immediately. Another meat shop in the area, Pappu Mutton Shop, was issued a notice for violating registration conditions. Officials said its licence may be suspended if hygiene issues are not resolved within the given timeline. At Windsor Street Market in Indirapuram, Lucknow Wale Kababi Non-Veg Restaurant was pulled up for displaying roasted meat in the open and poor cleanliness, Yadav said.
