Time of India10 hours ago
Gaya: The ruling NDA is making all efforts to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Gaya visit on Aug 22 a grand success.
In view of this, the state chiefs of all NDA constituents — BJP president Dilip Jaiswal, his JD(U) counterpart Umesh Singh Kushwaha, LJP(Ram Vilas)'s Raju Tiwari, HAM's Anil Kumar and RLM's Madan Chaudhary — met in Gaya on Wednesday.
The PM will address a public meeting on the sprawling Magadh University campus, less than 2km to the west of Gautam Buddha's seat of enlightenment. Keeping in mind the security requirements, some trees inside the university campus have either been felled or pruned.
At the NDA meeting, the BJP state chief, in particular, referred to the initiative taken by the Union govt at PM Modi's behest to conserve and promote Buddhist heritage sites and develop the religious circuit under the public-private-partnership mode.
During his Gaya visit, Prime Minister Modi is likely to announce a religious corridor in Magadh region on the pattern of Kashi Vishvanath and Mahakal temples, besides redevelopment of Gaya international airport, for which Rs 300 crore have been earmarked, according to the ruling NDA. Extension of the runway from the existing 2,200 metres by another 600 metres is pending for long. Once the runway is expanded, wide-body aircraft of international airlines can land and take off from the Gaya airport.

Senior officials of the state govt, including chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena and DGP Vinay Kumar, are also expected to visit Gaya to review the arrangements.
According to political observers, the PM's visit is specially significant for HAM leader and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, as besides Gaya being his home turf, the show will reflect on the party's seat sharing claims.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the United Nations. The 80th session of the UNGA will open on September 9. The high-level General Debate will run from September 23-29, with Brazil as the traditional first speaker of the session, followed by the US. CM wants AP to be green energy corridor

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to craft a comprehensive plan to transform Andhra Pradesh into a 'Green Energy Corridor,' calling for short, medium and long-term strategies aligned with global energy trends. During a review at his camp office on Wednesday, Naidu focused on power supply, projects, investments, and easing electricity tariff burdens. The meeting included energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, chief secretary K Vijayanand and senior officials from APTransco and APGenco. The Chief Minister stressed that green energy is the future, urging officials to reduce renewable energy production costs to benefit consumers. With electricity demand projected to rise by 8.9 per cent in the next two to three years, he called for proactive planning to meet this with sustainable sources. He proposed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise green energy production costs and suggested exploring non-tariff revenue streams, such as leasing Transco's fiber optic network, potentially generating Rs 7,000 crore. Expressing concern over the state's 9 per cent power distribution losses, Naidu advocated for improved feeder management and categorisation to curb losses. He also proposed modernising transmission lines and encouraging local consumption of locally generated power to minimise transmission losses. Reflecting on past energy audits that reduced power theft, he ordered a detailed study of current consumption patterns and a significant reduction in open-market power purchases. Chief secretary Vijayanand noted the target of lowering the per-unit purchase cost to Rs 4.80. Naidu suggested deploying sensors and drones for weather prediction to optimise power generation, especially as consumption reached 270 million units in March-April and is expected to hit 12,700 mw between September 2025 and March 2026. He urged officials to boost generation capacity and explore power swapping to reduce procurement costs. Additionally, he called for identifying sites for solar and wind projects, highlighting Andhra Pradesh's 65-gigawatt wind power potential and Rayalaseema's suitability for pumped energy projects. Wind power, at Rs 4.6 per unit, is more cost-effective than thermal power's Rs 5-6 per unit. Since June 2024, renewable energy projects worth Rs 3.19 lakh crore have been the PM-Surya Ghar solar rooftop project, Naidu set a target of 10,000 installations per constituency, with monthly progress reports for SC, ST, BC, and other communities. He strongly opposed smart meters for agricultural connections and directed power utilities to offer services via WhatsApp Mana Mitra. The Chief Minister also sought Central government's support for coal procurement for APGenco's thermal units. To enhance safety and service, he advocated using AI and predictive maintenance technology to replace outdated power lines, prevent electrical accidents, and address low voltage and leakages. Naidu emphasized ensuring an uninterrupted, high-quality power supply, aligning with Andhra Pradesh's vision to lead in green energy innovation.

India-China: A thaw is in the air

While a cross-Himalayan thaw seems to have begun setting in since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October on the sidelines of the Brics summit, US President Donald Trump's tariff tirade may be giving India's ties with China a sudden upswing. Both have eased curbs placed on each other. Now, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is set to visit India next week for talks with national security advisor Ajit Doval, before the two heads of state possibly meet at the SCO summit in China a few weeks later. Progress may be incremental but is crucial for at least trade ties to achieve normalcy after the Galwan clash of 2020. Perhaps India's investment restrictions will be eased too, duly calibrated to cover security concerns. If anything, it would only assert India's geopolitical neutrality at a time of fraught world affairs. Across the globe, hard-nosed calculations are being made. And business is business.
