Projecting LB Cody Simon's role in 2025 for Cardinals Of all the Cardinals' rookies, Simon has the best shot at starting.
The Arizona Cardinals selected seven players in the 2025 NFL draft. Their fourth-round pick, linebacker Cody Simon, was selected with the 155th overall pick in the draft.
What role could he play for the team as a rookie? We will look at each draft pick and make projections for what role each can viably expect for them in 2025.
What is the case for Simon?
Expected role for Arizona Cardinals LB Cody Simon
Of all the Cardinals' draft picks, Simon actually has the best shot of being a starter. Kyzir White has gone unsigned this offseason. Replacing him and fellow free agent linebacker Krys Barnes on the roster are free agent additions Akeem Davis-Gaither and Mykal Walker, both of whom have been mostly special teams players in their career.
Simon is an athletic, smart football player. He could start at the Mike linebacker job.
If he doesn't, perhaps he will play in a rotational role.
If Owen Pappoe plays like he did last season and either Davis-Gaither or Walker start, Simon could end up on special teams or even inactive on many Sundays.

Hurricanes fall one victory short of a berth in the College World Series after loss at Louisville

In a battle defined by grit and high emotions, the Miami Hurricanes fell to the Louisville Cardinals, 3-2, in Game 3 of the NCAA Louisville Super Regional. The Hurricanes conclude the 2025 season with a 35-27 overall record, including a 15-14 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and reached their first Super Regional since 2016. In a tight contest through the early innings, Max Galvin put Miami on the board in style. After freshman Michael Torres singled to left-center on an 0-2 pitch, Galvin blasted a two-run homer down the right-field line, giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Louisville answered in the fourth inning, beginning with a bunt single down the third-base line by Garret Pike. Zion Rose followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, bringing Pike home and cutting Miami's lead in half. Tague Davis then singled to right, advancing Rose to third as the Cardinals threatened with runners on the corners. Bayram Hot tied the score 2-2 with a fielder's-choice RBI, as Rose came home to score. With the score now tied, Miami head coach J.D. Arteaga turned to the bullpen, bringing in left-hander Rob Evans for starter Reese Lumpkin. Evans then retired the next batter to keep the game tied. Louisville threatened again in the fifth, as Moore led off with a single. After a flyout by Klein, Miami made another pitching change, bringing in right-hander Will Smith to try and put the Cardinals' attack to a halt. Moore stole second and walks to Munroe and King Jr. loaded the bases with one out. But Smith remained composed, escaping the jam by striking out Pike before inducing a groundout to third baseman Daniel Cuvet, ending the inning and keeping the score tied at two. But the Cardinals quickly swung the momentum back in their favor after Miami loaded the bases on a single by Galvin and back-to-back walks. The regional hosts escaped the jam with a clutch double play that began with a force at home and ended with Renzo Gonzalez being thrown out at first. Smith responded with authority, striking out the side in order as tension mounted across Jim Patterson Stadium. The Cardinals broke the tie in the seventh when Munroe singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. King Jr. followed with an RBI double to center, scoring Munroe and giving Louisville a 3-2 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Hurricanes threatened with runners on first and second with one out, but came up short as the Cardinals shut the door to seal the win. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson) ST. LOUIS (AP) — Clayton Kershaw allowed one run in five innings to record his first win since last August, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Kershaw (1-0) threw 82 pitches, gave up six hits, struck out seven and walked none. The 37-year-old left-hander had not struck out at least seven since June 8, 2023, at Cincinnati, and his last win was also at St. Louis, on Aug. 18, 2024. Advertisement Tommy Edman drove in three runs with two hits and a sacrifice fly, and Mookie Betts homered for the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff double and went 1 for 4. St. Louis starter Michael McGreevy (1-1) was 7 years old when Kershaw made his major league debut on May 25, 2008, against the Cardinals. The 24-year-old right-hander, recalled from Triple-A Memphis to make his first start this season, gave up four runs in six innings. Edman had an RBI single and Hyeseong Kim hit a two-run triple to put LA ahead 3-0 in the second. Edman added a run-scoring double in the fourth. St. Louis scored against Kershaw in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by Masyn Winn. Advertisement Key moment With a runner on third and two outs in the second inning, shortstop Winn fielded a hard grounder by Betts on the grass behind second base, twirled and fired to first baseman Willson Contreras for the out. The Dodgers unsuccessfully challenged the call. Key stat Kershaw, who is 17 strikeouts shy of 3,000 in his career, improved to 12-6 lifetime against the Cardinals. Up next Dodgers: Begin a three-game series at San Diego on Monday night with Dustin May (3-4, 4.09 ERA) on the mound. Cardinals: At Toronto for a three-game series starting Monday nigth with Andre Pallante (4-3, 4.91) against the Blue Jays' José Berríos (2-2, 3.67). ___ AP MLB:

Clayton Kershaw delivers exactly what the Dodgers need in win over Cardinals

Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw delivers during the first inning Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. (Jeff Roberson / Associated Press) The Dodgers have sent Clayton Kershaw to the mound to give a slumping team a lift countless times during his 18-year career. And they've rarely been disappointed. So they did it again on a sultry Sunday afternoon in St. Louis and once again Kershaw delivered, earning his first win of the season in a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals that snapped a two-game losing streak and ended a slide that had seen the team lose five of its last seven. Advertisement 'He's been a stopper for many years. He's been a staff ace for many years. He's going to the Hall of Fame,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game. 'So he understands. And he's going to be prepared.' Especially after the Cardinals picked at an old wound just before the first pitch, using the massive scoreboard facing the Dodgers' dugout to replay video of Kershaw bent over, hands on knees, after giving up a series-winning home run to Matt Adams in Game 4 of the 2014 National League Division Series. Kershaw answered that slight with his best outing of an injury-delayed season, allowing just a run on six hits in five innings. He struck out seven, the most he's had in exactly two years, leaving him just 17 strikeouts shy of 3,000 for his career. And more importantly, he did not issue a walk for the first time in five starts. That performance was especially useful coming a day after the Dodgers' rotation was scrambled before the team's big three-game series with the Padres. Right-hander Tony Gonsolin was moved back to the injured list Saturday with discomfort in his surgically repaired elbow, leaving the Dodgers with 14 pitchers on the IL and without a starter for Tuesday's game in San Diego. A scan of Gonsolin's elbow on Saturday showed no structural damage. Advertisement Michael Kopech, activated from the injured list Saturday, pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth. For Roberts the most telling stat in Kershaw's line was the lack of walks since Kershaw has struggled with his control in his first brief comeback. 'What's been consistent is the inconsistency of the command,' Roberts said. 'There's certainly uncharacteristic walks in there, getting behind in counts, which is so uncharacteristic with Clayton.' Read more: Dodgers place starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the injured list Kershaw hit 91.5 mph with his fastball Sunday and averaged 89.6 mph. Advertisement 'The velocity is something that he's really mindful of and there might be a little bit of overthrow in there trying to chase a certain number versus just kind of commanding the baseball,' Roberts said. 'He wants both. He wants the velocity and feels he can command the ball.' Kershaw also became the first Dodger pitcher in the series to get some help from his offense, which scored four times in the first four innings and seven times in the game, the most runs the team has scored in a game this month. The Dodgers, who stranded 21 baserunners while going one for 25 with runners in scoring position in the first two games in St. Louis, wasted their first scoring opportunity Sunday. After Shohei Ohtani led off with a double to left-center, the next three hitters failed to get the ball out of the infield. Mookie Betts runs the bases after hitting a solo home run for the Dodgers in the seventh inning Sunday. (Jeff Roberson / Associated Press) But they scored three times in the second when three of the first four batters, Max Muncy, Will Smith and former Cardinal Tommy Edman, all singled to center ahead of Hyesong Kim's two-run triple to right. Advertisement A leadoff triple by Smith followed by a one-out double from Edman made it 4-0 in the fourth. And Kershaw, staked to the early lead, sailed into the fifth with a shutout before two singles and a two-out double by Masyn Winn got the Cardinals on the board. St. Louis added to that against reliever Lou Trivino in the sixth, with Willson Contreras doubling off the left-field wall, then scoring on Alec Burleson's one-out fly ball to center. The teams traded runs in the seventh with Mookie Betts lining a two-out solo homer just over the wall in left in the seventh and the Cardinals answering with a walk and two-out singles by Brendan Donovan and Contreras. The Dodgers then closed out the scoring with two runs in a sloppy eighth inning that featured a single, two walks, two batters hit by pitches, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. Now, the Dodgers move on to San Diego, which is just a game back in the NL West. Roberts, however, downplayed the importance of the first series of the season against the division rival. Advertisement 'Outside of it just [being] a division opponent, and us trying to find a way to win a game, it really doesn't have any extra impact,' he said. 'Right now we're not playing our best baseball, but I think that that environment is going to bring out the best in us. 'It's a fun place to play a ball game. But as far as kind of the stakes right now, I don't think it really has a whole lot of extra.' Sign up for more Dodgers news with Dodgers Dugout. Delivered at the start of each series.
