LPG subsidies to continue for small food businesses, says Armizan
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said the Cabinet had instructed that amendments be made to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 to include this group access to subsidised LPG.
Following this, Armizan said his ministry had engaged in discussions with affected stakeholders for their views and suggestions for the planned amendment until Oct 31.
'We welcome any suggestions from any stakeholders on how to make amendments that would provide recognition for these businesses.
"However, control mechanisms will still be enforced to prevent leakages caused by recent decanting cases.
'We hope to continue providing LPG subsidies, for domestic; and micro and small traders in the food and beverage sector,' he said during Ministers' Question Time (MQT) in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 12).
Armizan was responding to an additional question from Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PN-Rantau Panjang) on whether the ministry had conducted a study on the possible financial effect that higher-priced commercial-grade LPG cylinders have had on small traders.
This follows a plan that began on May 1 earlier this year, where eateries, including hawker stalls, were to be banned from using subsidised gas cylinders as part of Ops Gasak, which was an initiative to curb the misuse of subsidised LPG.
But then Armizan announced on June 5, that these traders would be exempt from LPG enforcement until Oct 31 later this year.
Currently, the Control of Supplies Regulations (Amendment) 2021 limits the ownership and use of subsidised LPG exceeding 42kg at any one time without a scheduled controlled goods permit, since it came into effect on Oct 15, 2021.

Govt, opposition close ranks over assault on Rafizi's son
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of parliament from both sides of the divide today expressed solidarity in condemning the attack on the son of former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH–Port Dickson), speaking at a press conference in Parliament, described the incident as an act of violence that went beyond the bounds of humanity. The Negri Sembilan menteri besar said that, in a democratic country, differences of opinion should never be resolved through threats or violence, especially when children are involved. "We fully support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement that the law must be upheld without compromise. "No one should escape firm action if proven to be involved," he said. Present were other government MPs, including Subang MP Wong Chen, P. Prabakaran (Batu), Tan Kar Hing (Gopeng), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), Dr Taufiq Johari (Sungai Petani), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau) and Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang). At the same time, the opposition bloc, in a separate press conference, also condemned the attack. Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (PN–Larut) said the opposition also stood behind Rafizi and his family. Shazeli added that actions have been taken, including obtaining and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the scene. Rafizi today also revealed that his wife received two threatening messages via WhatsApp, the first at 1.12am and the second at 11.02am. He believed that the attack on his son may be linked to a meeting he had last week with a group of whistleblowers regarding a scandal. However, he declined to disclose details of the scandal.

High-level committee set up to oversee cross-ministry rural development
KUALA LUMPUR: A high-level committee (HLC) on rural development has been set up to coordinate efforts across ministries to address rural-urban development challenges, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who chaired the inaugural HLC meeting in Parliament, said the committee will be the apex strategic platform to align rural development policies and programmes. 'The current development of rural areas is facing increasingly complex challenges from overlapping functions between ministries and agencies to resource constraints and siloed implementation,' Zahid said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14) The HLC, which will convene at least twice a year, is supported by six working committees focusing on key areas: education, entrepreneurship, rural economy, digitalisation, rural tourism, and infrastructure. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the initiative is in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises integrated governance to reduce duplication, optimise resources, and speed up outcomes. He also cited a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report that stated that no Asean country is on track to fully achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to rural development by 2030 without better coordination in infrastructure, workforce, human capital, and poverty reduction efforts. "Key areas discussed during the HLC meeting included improving access to rural schools, enhancing rural tourism promotion, strengthening support for senior citizens and special needs groups, and upgrading rural healthcare infrastructure," he said. Several cross-ministry initiatives are already in motion, including the UP_TVET, a centralised application system for vocational and technical training and Inap Desa 2026, aimed at positioning homestays as key attractions during Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Zahid said the government intended to curb rural-urban migration by creating more opportunities in rural areas, nurturing rural tech entrepreneurs, and enhancing the competitiveness of the rural tourism sector. 'Rural development is not just about building physical infrastructure. It's about building the future and unlocking the potential of our people,' he said. 'With a whole-of-government approach, I am confident this HLC will help create a thriving, sustainable rural ecosystem that contributes significantly to national progress,' he added.

Proposal to separate AG-public prosecutor roles to be presented to Cabinet in August
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the public prosecutor will be tabled before the Cabinet at the end of this month. "The distinction between these roles has been a long-standing request. Now we are seeing encouraging progress," Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 14). He said this in response to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda and the timeline for their implementation. Anwar said that there had been 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments - one involving citizenship and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025. Among the reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025 and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025. The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year. On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation. – Bernama
