Total Football: Katie McCabe tells us about leading Ireland and what's on her bucket list

RTÉ News16-05-2025

It's always risky saying that you saved the best for last, but when Katie McCabe hits your screens for the final Total Football of the season - it's true! Aisling O'Reilly went to London to meet the Ireland and Arsenal superstar.
Tune in to Total Football, hosted by Aisling O'Reilly and Rasdi Nsimba, Saturday at 10am on RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player!
Katie looks back on her life in football, from Kilnamanagh AFC to scoring in the Women's World Cup, not to mention a glittering club career with Arsenal. She tells us about becoming Ireland WNT captain at only 21 years of age.
Apart from the serious football chat, Aisling has some craic too. There's some quick fire questions - press play up top to see what's on Katie's bucket list!
As always, we pack a lot into the show, so here's what else is coming up. We hit the water on Lough Ree as social media stars Ciaran Duffy and Theo Hajji take on Nasti 2k (real name Jonathan Finlay) and Jonathan Morley in a skills test with a difference.
After all the action Nasti has built up an appetite, so he makes a trademark spice bag in studio! The lads from Cork's Everton AFC are there for a taste of the action too.
FAI coaches Heather Jameson and Cameron Molloy Moules have been with us all season and they join us to chat skills and staying with the game. They want you to keep trying your Total Skills coaches and to keep having fun.
The story goes that Cork club Everton AFC were named as the club was founded when the English club were over in Ireland playing a friendly. But, we know for a fact that the Rebel lads have some skills they want to show us. And, they were up for some fun in studio too. Press the image above to see the club.
Thanks to our friends in the FAI for all their help in making the show and to all the clubs around the country who did the home and away fixtures with Total Football.
Don't forget to enter the Total Football competition where you could win a signed Ireland WNT or MNT jersey and 4 VIP tickets to the Aviva Stadium to watch the boys in green - click here for details.

Premier League legend backs Irish star to continue record-breaking haul at Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of the flat-racing season, with some of the world's best jockeys and trainers arriving in Berkshire for five days of top-notch horse-racing action. This year's event begins on Tuesday 17 June, with talent from Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and the United States all competing for a slice of the huge £10 million prize pot. And former Arsenal star and horse racing fanatic Ray Parlour believes Irishman Aidan O'Brien will extend his remarkable win rate at the famous meeting later this month. The Ballydoyle star is already the most successful trainer in Royal Ascot history with a record 91 winners. He scooped six wins at Royal Ascot last year, making him the leading trainer at the event - the 13th time he has achieved the feat in his career. 'Aidan O'Brien is the best flat trainer at the moment,' says Parlour. 'He has so many top horses in his stable who can win the sprints and longer distance races, so naturally, he's one to follow.' The ex-Gunner says he'll be focusing on Thursday's showpiece Gold Cup, where O'Brien will be looking to add to his record-breaking eight wins in the race. His horse Illinois is 7/5 favourite with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to triumph ahead of Candelari at 7/2 and Trawlerman at 21/5. Another O'Brien starter in the race is Jan Brueghel, priced at 26/5. 'Illinois is a good horse who may make it a very interesting race and could come out on top in the Gold Cup,' adds Parlour. The two highest-earning races are the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, with a whopping £1 million handed to the winner of each race. In the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Lazzat is the 7/2 frontrunner, Inisherin at 24/5 and O'Brien's Storm Boy at 6/1. Ascot's opening race is also highly rewarding, with the winner taking home £750,000. With John and Thady Gosden as the trainers, Parlour plans to keep a close watch on Lead Artist, expecting Oisin Murphy to ride again. Just last month, Murphy guided Lead Artist to a thrilling victory at Newbury, where he narrowly defeated Dancing Gemini in the closing moments of the race. Now, the two horses are set for a rematch at Ascot, and Parlour is confident Murphy will replicate that winning performance in Berkshire. 'In the opening race at Ascot, Lead Artist is a horse I know won at Newbury and could go very well in the Queen Anne Stakes,' he says. Lead Artist is 26/5 with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to win the race, just behind Dancing Gemini at 9/2 and the favourite Rosallion at 7/2. Four-time FA Cup winner Parlour is also tipping jockey Ryan Moore for more success at this year's event. The 41-year-old has won the leading jockey title 10 times at Ascot and set a post-war record of nine winners for a single Royal Ascot meeting in 2015. 'Ryan Moore is such a great jockey, too, and he proves time and time again the quality he has in the saddle,' he said. As well as NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland offering great odds on all UK and international horse racing events, NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland has welcome offers and promotions, including up to 500 free spins for new customers (full T&Cs can be found here). You could also win a pair of tickets to the Summer Festival at Galway Races every time you bet €10 on UK and Irish horse racing - terms and conditions apply*. 'Royal Ascot is a superb spectacle and an icon of British Sport,' says Parlour. 'It gets the Royal treatment as well, so it's 100 per cent up there for sure as one of the year's best events. 'Sometimes you receive a tip and follow that one, or look at the in-form trainers and jockeys. For me, especially in the big races, I may just go with horse number 15, which was my number when I played.' Visit NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland (18+ only). *Key terms and conditions for the Summer Festival at Galway Races giveaway: The promotion will run until 13/07/2025. Ed Sheeran says he identifies as ‘culturally Irish'

'I do feel like my culture is something that I'm really proud of and grew up with and want to express.' English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has said that he identifies as culturally Irish. The 34-year-old hitmaker, who was born and raised in England, has said that the Emerald Isle is where he is most successful 'musically.' 'I class my culture as Irish. I think that's what I grew up with,' he said on The Louis Theroux Podcast. Ed Sheeran spoke to Louis Theroux (Ian West/PA) News in 90 Seconds - Tuesday June 10 'My mum's family is very, very small, it's her and her parents, and my dad's family is… he's got seven brothers and sisters. 'We'd spend all of our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house,' he continued. 'So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain. 'I do feel like my culture is something that I'm really proud of and grew up with and want to express,' he added. Sheeran said just because he was born in Britain, doesn't mean he has to be 'British.' 'There's loads of people I know that are half this or quarter this,' he said. 'I don't think there's any rules to it. It should be how you feel and how you were raised and what you lean into. 'I'd say [Ireland's] basically my second home musically. I'd say Ireland is the place that I am most successful musically.' The Galway Girl singer recently recorded the music video for his new song 'Old Phone' at an pop-up Irish pub in Boston. 'The Old Phone' was open to fans for one weekend only, as Sheeran performed the track to lucky attendees. 'Inspired by a journey through time, The Old Phone is a place where memories are celebrated and new ones are made,' a description of the bar reads. 'Blending the nostalgia of times gone by with the comfort of your favourite local establishment, guests are a part of something much larger than just a night out.' His highly anticipated eighth album Play is set for release on September 12th. He said the LP is one of five new albums in the works, and said the next four will be called Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Stop. The albums will complete the cycle he began with his first five albums titled +, x, ÷, =, and –. He said he was inspired by Quentin Tarantino's idea of crafting a 10-film legacy.

The Jurgen Klopp disciple ready to boost Pep Guardiola's Manchester City

Some worrying news for bookshops on Merseyside. Any copies of Intensity by Pep Lijnders are likely to remain on the shelves. They may want to instead store them with El Nino, the Fernando Torres autobiography that was a love story to Liverpool. But Torres joined Chelsea and now, barely a year after leaving Liverpool, Lijnders' return to English football comes alongside Pep Guardiola.
