Lok Sabha adjourned for day amid din of oppn protests over SIR
Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on Friday amid vociferous protests by opposition parties demanding a discussion on the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Before the House was adjourned, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman withdrew the earlier 'Income-Tax Bill, 2025', with the Select Committee having submitted its report on it.
As the House assembled at 3 pm, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was in the Chair, asked Sitharaman to move for leave to withdraw the Bill. She then withdrew the Bill.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said it is unfortunate that opposition parties are wasting time when private member bills were to be taken up. He said opposition parties must not say that the government did not cooperate as the government has said from the beginning that it is willing to discuss all issues under rules.
Opposition members raised slogans like "SIR wapas lo (roll back SIR)", "SIR pe charcha karo (take up discussion on SIR)" in the House, referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Earlier in the day, some members were even seen banging the table of the Lok Sabha Speaker, which was strongly objected to by presiding officer Tenneti."Yeh dhol nahi hai (this is not a drum). You cannot bang the table like this. I take strong objection to banging of the Lok Sabha Speaker's table," Tenneti, a TDP member, said.With the members unrelenting in their protests, Tenneti, adjourned the proceedings till 3 pm.When the House convened at 11 am, Speaker Om Birla paid homage to former Lok Sabha member and former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik, who passed away on August 5. He also read out a reference on the anniversary of the Quit India Movement.Soon after the Speaker read out the references, opposition members shouted slogans, displayed placards and some of them trooped into the Well as they protested against the SIR.Despite the din, five questions and supplementaries were taken up during the 23 minutes of Question Hour.With no let-up in the protests, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings till 12 noon.
The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the SIR exercise initiated by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections due later this year.

"Resign From Lok Sabha If You Don't Trust Poll Body": BJP To Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must resign on "moral grounds" from the membership of the Lok Sabha if he does not have faith in the Election Commission, and flayed him for not submitting a written declaration on his "vote theft" claim. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also asked Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to resign as members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha if they do not have any faith in the polls. "You (Rahul Gandhi) make baseless allegations before the media and then refuse to give proof and a written declaration when the constitutional body asks for it," Bhatia said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here. Reading out excerpts of a past Supreme Court judgement, the BJP spokesperson said the Supreme Court had observed that there was no doubt about the bona fides of the Election Commission and that it was a matter of record that the poll body had built a reputation as an impartial body over the years. "Rahul Gandhi, if you don't trust the election commission and the observations made by the Supreme Court, do one thing: first, you resign from the Lok Sabha membership. Priyanka Gandhi, you also resign. Sonia Gandhi, you also resign at least on moral grounds because you are raising questions on the same Election Commission," Bhatia said. "Then, you go to the Supreme Court, the high court and people," he said. Bhatia also demanded that the chief ministers of Congress-ruled Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh must also resign, for their top leaders had no faith in the EC. "Whatever suits you, you accept. Whatever is inconvenient, you reject and cast aspersions on the Election Commission. This will not work," Bhatia said. Gandhi on Friday asserted that he had taken the oath inside Parliament on the Constitution, as a response to the EC demanding from him an affidavit under oath over his "vote chori" claim. Addressing the Vote Adhikar Rally in Bengaluru, he also said the Karnataka government should probe the inclusion of fake voters in the state during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. "The EC asks me to file an affidavit and give information under oath. I have taken oath inside Parliament, in front of the Constitution, on the Constitution," he said. Bhatia termed Gandhi's "vote theft" claim a lie: "'Rahul aka 'arajak tatva' (anarchic element) has now become Rahul aka 'vidhwansak' (destroyer). He wants to destroy the Constitution of India and Indian democracy." He also accused the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha of being "immature" and starting a war against constitutional institutions by threatening EC officials.

Raj election dept prepares for special intensive revision of electoral rolls
1 2 Jaipur: The election department of Rajasthan has begun preparing for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists by uploading the 2002 electoral rolls on its website, according to officials in the department. Booth level officers (BLOs) are now conducting table-top exercises, without visiting the field, comparing the 2002 electoral rolls with the 2025 electoral rolls. "They are identifying those voters who were not there on the 2002 electoral rolls. After identifying these voters, they will categorise all voters into different grades – A, B, C, D, E. Grade 'A' shall mean those who are already there on the 2002 voter list and do not need to submit any documents. Grade 'B' shall mean those who need to submit one document as regards their age. Grade 'C' shall mean those who need to submit two documents and so on," an official told TOI on condition of anonymity. The schedule for the SIR exercise in the state will be announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) as part of a nationwide exercise. After this is done, BLOs will visit voters' residences in their respective areas to inform them about the documents they need to submit under the exercise and to request that they keep their documents ready. Cong questions timing, intent of EC voter list revision in Bihar
1 2 Jodhpur: Alleging that there is an attempt underway to influence the impending elections in Bihar, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Singhvi Saturday targeted the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and claimed people whose names were removed would not have enough time to appeal. Questioning the timing of the electoral roll revision, Singhvi said EC could have undertaken the cleanup of voter lists in Dec, as has been done in earlier years. In the past, the EC carried out this process two years before the elections, so if someone's name was removed, they had the chance to appeal, Singhvi said. "But in Bihar, the way crores of people's names were removed from the voter list is what we are questioning," he added. Raising questions over EC's intent, Singhvi also said the commission's demand for a signed affidavit from the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for the anomalies he exposed in voter lists in Karnataka, was an "absurd joke and a mockery of the system." "When Rahul Gandhi raised this issue with the Election Commission, they instead asked him for an affidavit. This is like a situation where a person tells the police that a thief is running away, and the police, instead of acting, asks the complainant to provide an affidavit," Singhvi said, taking a dig at the commission's demand. He said Congress would raise this issue across the country and highlight how the EC, under BJP's leadership, is violating norms. He said the EC's decision to disregard Aadhar as a valid document for voter verification was surprising since this document was not only issued by the govt but also being accepted as valid for govt verification purposes, except by the EC.
