Awareness programme held on substance abuse
Visakhapatnam: Marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, an awareness programme was held at MVR Degree and PG College on Thursday.
Addressing the students, the college Secretary and Correspondent V Rama Rao stressed on the importance of staying away from substance abuse and being focused on their academic goals. He exhorted youth to lead life in a responsible manner.
Participating as chief guest, Circle Inspector of Police, Gajuwaka A Parthasarathi explained the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking and their impact on health and society. He stated that drug abusers suffer from harmful effects caused by drugs, humiliation and social discrimination they face.
He explained that drug abuse not only impacts individuals and families but also society. Highlighting the theme for 2025 'the evidence is clear: invest in prevention', the CI stressed that students and all the stakeholders should strive to build a drug-free society. College Principal A Balakrishna, junior college Principal Y Eshwar Raju, Vice Principal SV Krishna, Intermediate College Principal V Tejeswar Rao, assistant principal PH Ram and others, along with students and faculty, participated.

GUNTUR: In a decisive move to combat drug abuse, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday launched a full-scale campaign against ganja and narcotics, vowing to make Andhra Pradesh a drug-free State. Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, scores of students, government employees, and people rallied behind the slogan 'No Drugs Bro', symbolising a united front in the fight against substance abuse. Naidu joined citizens and students on a walkathon in Guntur, from Fever Hospital Junction to Mirchi Dhaba. Holding banners and chanting slogans, participants pledged their support for a drug-free society. Addressing the gathering after the rally, the Chief Minister underlined the government's firm stance: 'We will not tolerate drugs in any form. Those who sell ganja or narcotics will face strict action, including property confiscation.' As part of its intensified crackdown on drug abuse, the State government announced it will confiscate the properties of individuals involved in the cultivation, transportation, or sale of drugs. To encourage public participation, dedicated citizen-reporting channels have been introduced, including a WhatsApp helpline (8977781972) and a toll-free number (1972), enabling people to report drug-related activities while maintaining anonymity. The State government is also expanding its rehabilitation infrastructure with the establishment of 56 new de-addiction centres, including three of world-class standard. Additionally, fast-track courts for NDPS cases are being set up in key cities such as Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram, Guntur, and Tirupati. To promote long-term awareness and prevention, schools will launch 'Eagle Clubs', while celebrities and influencers are being urged to actively participate in anti-drug campaigns. The State government will also leverage technology, deploying drones and extensive CCTV networks, to monitor and curb drug-related activities more effectively.

Drug peddlers will face action, warns NTR District Collector
VIJAYAWADA: NTR District Collector G Lakshmisha and Commissioner of Police SV Rajasekhar Babu on Thursday issued a stern warning to drug peddlers and users, stating that strict action would be taken against anyone found selling or consuming narcotics in the district. 'The law is strict and no one will be spared,' they said, while addressing participants of a mega walkathon organised from Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event, organised by the NTR District Police Department, aimed to raise awareness about the drug menace and promote a drug-free district, state, and country. Thousands of students, officials from various departments, and members of NGOs took part in the walkathon. Lakshmisha declared that NTR district stands united in the fight against drugs. 'Drugs will destroy the individual, the family, and eventually harm the entire society,' he said. He added, 'We are appointing Eagle Clubs and campus ambassadors for this initiative.' Commissioner Rajasekhar Babu said, 'The government is taking an iron-fist approach against drugs and is implementing the NDPS Act. We have already booked five individuals under this Act.'

‘Around 1,100 arrested in drug-related offences': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
NEW DELHI: Around 1,100 people have been arrested for drug-related offences in the last four to five months, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Thursday. FIRs have been filed, large quantities of drugs have been seized and many addicted individuals have been sent to rehabilitation centres. Addressing an event at the Yamuna Sports Complex on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Gupta praised the law enforcement agencies for their efforts but stressed that public support is equally crucial to curb the menace. She further emphasised that the Prime Minister has laid out a national vision to make India drug-free by 2047 and the Delhi government is resolute in carrying out every responsibility towards achieving this goal. She said, 'When India celebrates 100 years of independence in 2047, we must be able to present it as a healthy, empowered and drug-free nation.'
