Frankfurt board member apologizes for fans delaying game for 50 mins
Eintracht Frankfurt fans forcing kick-off in Sunday's Bundesliga game at Bochum to be delayed by 50 minutes will have consequences, Frankfurt board member Philipp Reschke has said.
The Eagles won 3-1 to consolidate fourth spot but the behaviour of the away supporters, who refused to remove a banner blocking an emergency exit for almost an hour, stole the headlines.
"We have to apologize to Bochum and everyone else affected by this," he told DAZN. "We have to talk to our fans. We're obviously not happy because it shouldn't have come to this."
It is the third time in three years that such a scene has transpired at Bochum, after VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach fans also blocked an exit with banners.
Frankfurt 'Ultras' eventually opted to remove all their banners on Sunday and many then left the stadium before the actual kick-off.
"We have to work on finding different solutions together," said Reschke.
"We were well informed beforehand that we weren't allowed to hang banners over the escape routes and gates, but it still happened. Then debates broke out down there that we would all have liked to have avoided. That must not happen, because the circumstances were known."

SL Benfica President Rui Costa Inaugurates Portuguese club's new Residential Academy in Florida
The "Eagles" have taken their world-famous player development methodology to the United States TAMPA, Fla., June 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- SL Benfica President Rui Costa officially inaugurated the club's new Residential Academy this Friday at Saint Leo University in Florida, marking a major step in the club's international expansion and long-term commitment to youth development in the United States. The event brought together members of the Benfica board, academy families, the Saint Leo University community, and guests from across the Tampa Bay area. First team players Florentino Luís, Joshua Wynder and Renato Sanches, who graduated from the academy in Lisbon, were also present. The ceremony was part of Benfica's visit to the U.S., where the club is participating in the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup. Benfica's player development training methodology is world famous with the club twice winning the award for best academy in the world at the Globe Soccer Awards and producing elite talent such as Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, João Neves, Gonçalo Ramos and João Felix. With this launch, Benfica becomes the third major European club to establish a residential academy in the U.S., beginning with 100 student-athletes and plans to grow to 500. Training will follow the club's training methods and will be led by Benfica-trained coaches. President Rui Costa said, "For us, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, it is a great honor to be here today, in person, to inaugurate this academy. We are known, beyond our borders, for the excellent work we do in player development, and being able to carry out this partnership with Saint Leo University, here in the United States, fills us with pride and honor, especially because this is a model we strongly believe in: where our players can combine sporting excellence with academic development," he emphasized. He added, "It's a fantastic project, a huge project, one of great scale—but scale in the Benfica way. It is the first, but it will not be the last. Above all, it is an important pillar for what we envision as the expansion of the Benfica brand, and for one of our highest priorities, as I mentioned earlier: to develop players the Benfica way." Benfica's academy footprint spans 5 continents with full academies in Portugal, USA, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and technical partnerships in Egypt, Dubai, India, Mauritius, Malta, Japan, Lithuania and Luxembourg and Poland alongside high-performance youth camps across the globe. Edwin Narain, chair of the St. Leo University board of trustees, said, "It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Saint Leo University, as we celebrate the official launch of a partnership between Saint Leo University and the Benfica Residential Academy," Narain said. "We are honored that the club has chosen Saint Leo University as the site of its first residential academy in the United States." View original content: SOURCE Sport Lisboa e Benfica

Wirtz and Kimmich headline Germany squad for Nations League finals
Germany have released their 26-man squad for the Nations League semi-finals against Portugal next month. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has handed maiden call-ups to Tom Bischof and Nick Woltemade. Bischof recently concluded an impressive 2024/25 campaign with Hoffenheim, establishing him as one of the promising midfielders in the Bundesliga. Advertisement The 19-year-old is set to join Bayern Munich ahead of the Club World Cup after penning a long-term contract with the German giants in January. Woltemade has turned everyone's attention with his stellar performances for Stuttgart, racking up 16 goals and three assists in all competitions. He is looking to finish the season on a high when Stuttgart face Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB Pokal finals this weekend. Several Bayern players have made the cut, including Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka. Jamal Musiala is one of the notable absentees due to fitness concerns. The Bayern youngster has been sidelined since suffering a muscle strain during a game against Augsburg last month. Advertisement Bayern also decided not to let Musiala leave for international duty as they want him to recover completely for the Club World Cup. Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz will spearhead the attack, while Niclas Fullkrug has also returned to the squad after a long time. Angelo Stiller, Nadiem Amiri and Pascal Gross add quality and depth to the midfield. The backline misses star names like Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck due to injuries. Nagelsmann will rely on the likes of Jonathan Tah, Yann Aurel Bisseck and Waldemar Anton. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has returned to the fold after months, having recently recovered from a knee injury. Advertisement Ter Stegen will reclaim his No.1 spot for Die Mannschaft, with Alexander Nubel and Oliver Baumann as his deputies. Germany will face Portugal on June 4th, with the other semi-final played between France and Spain.

Brentford reject €9m Bayer Leverkusen offer for Mark Flekken
Bayer Leverkusen's opening bid for Brentford keeper Mark Flekken has reportedly been rejected. The Athletic currently reports that the 2023/24 Bundesliga champions did not meet the London club's initial asking price of approximately €13m. In point of fact, a lowball bid of approximately €9m was submitted. One tends to assume that a deal will still be reached at some point. The 31-year-old is said to have agreed to personal terms with Germany's red company team. Prior to his move to the Bees, the eight-times-capped Dutch international's entire professional career was spent in Germany. Advertisement An extra €3m amounts to peanuts for Germany's red company team, particularly after completing the sale of Jeremie Frimpong on Friday evening and the mega-blockbuster deal that should see Florian Wirtz move Merseyside for upwards of €130m. Official confirmation may still take time as Brentford will also not allow Flekken to depart before securing a replacement. GGFN | Peter Weis
