Mandla Ncikazi: Orlando Pirates still have so much to fight for
The expectations that come with playing for Orlando Pirates are so high that players do not have room for complacency when they play for the team.
This was the revelation of Pirates interim coach Mandla Ncikazi after his troops bounced back to winning ways on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United.
Pirates secured their No 2 spot on the log with five games to spare, as Mamelodi Sundowns had wrapped up the Premiership title this season.
But after Ncikazi dropped the ball in the second game of those five, having former coach Jose Riveiro win the first one in his last outing, that incensed The Ghost.
They saw their chances of avoiding the gap at the top of the log to not end on double digits take a huge knock ahead of their last three games.
Ncikazi and his troops heeded positively to the critics on Tuesday night in Polokwane, though, as they beat SuperSport United 1-0 to trim the gap to 14 points with two games to spare.
That win didn't only mean the gap could be eight points by the end of the season, but it also saw Pirates break an 18-game winning record in the league for the first time in the PSL era.
Ncikazi, speaking during the post-match duties deep in the bowels of New Peter Mokaba Stadium, was relatively pleased by that achievement.
However, the 56-year-old added why it's important for the team to win with every passing game, even if there is no silverware to compete for.
'Contrary to people believing that we have nothing to play for, I feel there's still so much to play for in our team,' he said.
'The records are important for the club, and the players must be proud of the history – having done what happened. It is game number 19.
'Secondly, there's still individual awards for all these players to compete for – the Goalkeeper of the Season might come from our club (during the award ceremony).
'A defender of the season might come from us – (Nkosinathi) Sibisi and (Deon) Hotto have an opportunity. There's nothing that has been confirmed yet.'
Ncikazi has continued with where Riveiro left off, integrating more youngsters into the team as goalkeeper Siyabonga Dladla made a full debut against SuperSport.
It was a good day in the office for Dladla, so much so that he also kept a clean sheet as No 1 Sipho Chaine, who was rested after being injured against TS Galaxy last Saturday, watched from the bench.
'I am happy for the young players that we gave an opportunity to today – Siya, the goalkeeper, produced a good performance,' Ncikazi said.
'We are playing game number 50, so we know that physically it was going to tell towards the end. Subconsciously, I am just proud that the other players pulled through.'
Another youngster, Simphiwe Selepe, who produced a Player of the Match-winning first start for Pirates against Galaxy, shone yet again on Tuesday, impressing Ncikazi.
'It's amazing how these youngsters are adapting, but again, credit must be given to the process of the club, youth coach and former coach,' Ncikazi said.
'It's just a lot of process from different people.
'It's not only Selepe, but a group of them that are waiting for the opportunity. I hope we give them an opportunity and grab it!'
It is not only the youngsters who are coming to the fore for Pirates and easing the workload on the regulars who've been playing week in and week out, but seniors as well.
Karim Kimvuidi crowned off another cameo with a goal contribution, assisting Mohau Nkota's lone goal.
'We have got quality, and that tells you that we have options. I am very proud that Kimvuidi has not played for a long time, but when he plays, he gives a crucial assist,' he said.
'That's why we have subs.
'I said in the change-room at the stage that we are in and having played so many games, substitutes become important.
'So, the game might be at a stalemate where we will get extra energy from the bench. And Karim did that for the team.'

Bulls coach Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Schreuder has added touch of class to Cavaliers
Nippy winger Riyaad Bam scored the only try for the Bulls during their Currie Cup defeat to the Pumas in Pretoria. Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Louis Schreuder's return from Bath in the Premiership is helping knit together an already fearsome Boland Cavaliers backline. The Bulls face their high-riding 'brothers' – Bulls owners Johann Rupert and Patrice Motsepe are also majority shareholders in Boland – in round four of the competition at Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington on Sunday (3pm kick-off). The hosts are fresh off a 29-10 bonus-point win against the Lions in round three in Wellington that increased their chances of making the Currie Cup play-offs. The Bulls are still smarting from a 41-7 humbling by the Pumas at home after two convincing wins. The two teams are joined on 11 points by log leaders the Pumas. 'Boland are pretty sharp,' Nomlomo said during an online media conference on Tuesday afternoon. 'Louis Schreuder came on at nine and he's a seasoned campaigner. He's literally just won the championship with Bath and now he comes in, so he'll be a massive help from that perspective.'

Marumo Gallants vs Orlando Pirates - Tuesday, 12 August
The 2025/26 Betway Premiership season is up and running with Orlando Pirates travelling to Bloemfontein for their first away fixture of the season as they visit Marumo Gallants for a clash at Dr Molemela Stadium on Tuesday night. The fixture pits one of the league's oldest clubs against one of the youngest, drawing another chapter in what is still a new yet exciting rivalry. It also marks Bucs coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's return to his previous home as he looks to collect the Soweto giants' first Betway Premiership points of the season. It's a match-up between two sides currently placed on opposite ends of the league table, following the results of what was an exciting opening weekend of league clashes. Maruma Gallants occupy fourth place in the early standings after the first game week after their victory over Richards Bay over the weekend. It was the perfect start to newly-appointed head coach Alexandre Laffite, who got his tenure off to a winning start despite finishing the game with 10 men. Goals from ex-Bucs reserves forward Bheki Mabuza and newly-recruited midfielder Simo Mbhele handed them a 2-1 win at King Zwelithini Stadium. It came at a cost however, with skipper Edgar Manaka suspended for the clash following his 39th minute red card. They have enough cover, however, in midfield in the form of Dimakatso Mashao, Pathutshedzo Nange, and Mkhuseli Rampa. There are also a few new arrivals in the form of both goal-scorers from the weekend, along with Teboho Motloung and Jaisen Cliiford who both formed part of their match day squad over the weekend. With Tshepho Mashiloane and Kamogelo Sebelebele, two more Buccaneers debuted in the defeat to Sekhukhune United while the likes of Sipho Mbule and Oswin Appollis made their first Betway Premiership appearances in the club's colours. There could be more new faces in the match day squad with Masindi Nemtajela and Sinoxolo Kwayiba both yet to feature, while Nkosikhona Ndaba inched closer to a competitive appearance when he was included on the bench against Babina Noko. All available options could contribute towards the Buccaneers' first league points of the season after they failed to get off the mark on home turf when they fell to a 1-0 defeat on Saturday night. In their first away outing of the season, Orlando Pirates are looking to get back to winning ways having found themselves deep in the bottom half of the table early on in their campaign. They are in unfamiliar territory in 13th place –- a fair distance away from their second-place finish in the previous season. Awaiting them is a high-flying Maruma Gallants outfit looking for back-to-back victories for the first time in their two opening fixtures since first ascending into the top flight. Orlando Pirates' dominance in the fixture was halted abruptly on their last visit to the Free State when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their new mentor back in March this year. It was their first league defeat in an unbeaten run of eight matches, which included four straight wins against Tuesday's hosts. Five of the eight previous fixtures have ended in victory for the Buccaneers, with an 8-1 win at Orlando Stadium accounting for half of the goals scored by the Soweto giants in fixtures between the two sides. A total of 20 goals have been scored with the hosts only accounting for four. Half of Gallants' goals came in the most recent fixture where they not only breached Orlando Pirates' defences for the first time at home, but also claimed their first maximum points hauling their own turf. The Buccaneers' have claimed five league victories in eight attempts against Bahlabane ba Ntwa, with two of those occurring away from home. The fixture kicks off at 19:30 with live coverage on SuperSport PSL. Tickets are available for purchase online on Computicket as well as selected outlets nationwide. Did Mohau Nkota just commit football's biggest sin in a radio interview?
Cardinal sin Mohau Nkota, who recently made his international debut for Bafana Bafana, has sealed a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Former Orlando Pirates starlet Mohau Nkota may have committed one of football's cardinal sins – speaking too honestly about his future plans – in a recent interview. Nkota impressed in his debut season with Orlando Pirates. Recently, he completed a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. There, he will play alongside Gini Wijnaldum and Mousa Dembele. It's a huge move for the 20-year-old, who not too long ago was running rings around defenders in the DStv Diski Challenge, and who will now face some of the world's best players – Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Karim Benzema, and others. Speaking on Sports Night Amplified, he revealed he was not planning on spending more than three years at the club, something the coach and supporters might not be too happy to hear him say. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'I know a lot of people might say that it's where most players retire, but for me, starting there is an opportunity,' the youngster said. 'I don't think I'm going to finish my three seasons because I'm going there to work… The money is good, but there's more to it than that. We all want financial security, but my dream is to play in the top leagues.' The Saudi Pro League has long been labelled a 'retirement league' because it often attracts big-name stars in the twilight of their careers, lured by lucrative contracts and a slower competitive pace compared to Europe's top leagues. However, recent seasons have seen younger talents making the move, aiming to prove themselves on a growing stage and perhaps use the platform as a springboard to Europe. Nkota, at just 20 years old, could position himself as part of this new wave – provided his performances back up his ambition. While it could be seen as an open secret that players tend to use clubs as stepping stones, it's never a good idea to admit that openly. Such comments could damage how the club's fans, coaches, and even teammates perceive him. Supporters want to believe a player is fully committed to their cause, while coaches value those motivated to succeed for the club rather than simply using it as a stepping stone. Teammates – especially those who see the team as their pinnacle rather than a pit stop – may also interpret his remarks as arrogant or disrespectful. Ultimately, Nkota's talent and ambition are undeniable, but in football, perception can be just as important as performance. If he hits the ground running in Saudi Arabia, scores goals, and helps his team win, fans may overlook his comments. But if results don't go his way, those same words could come back to haunt him. For now, his boots will have to do the talking – because winning hearts off the pitch might prove just as challenging as beating defenders on it.
